A (modern) Anti-Hero can be described as someone who does the wrong things for the right reasons. They may have no qualms about killing and maiming, regularly slaying anyone who opposes them. They may have no respect for the law or regulations or they may just downright hate people and society. They may be cheaters and thieves and liars and completely selfish. But, at the end of the day, their actions have served a greater good and the world is at least slightly better off for it.
An Anti-Hero can also be much milder, being one who is merely an antithesis of what most would normally perceive as a hero (e.g. being spindly and quiet as opposed to muscular and opinionated). Despite some belief otherwise, the modern anti-hero comes in numerous shapes and sizes.
In comparison, a character who has evil goals but redeemable qualities (honor, compassion, sense of fairness, etc.) would be an Anti-Villain instead of an Anti-Hero.
