Mach is a Semi-Heroic Vigilante from the New Jersey area. Though frequently on the case of various villain groups around the locale of Roosevelt City, his modus operandi and his frequent run-ins with the local superteam, The Alpha Force, make him a subject of considerable controversy in the area.

Origins

Early Life

Danny Miller grew up in Perth Amboy, a town shortly south of New York City. He and his sister, Rose, attended the public schools in the town. Though Danny always was on the quieter, less outgoing side of his class, he had a very strong sense of justice. Fitting more into the punk clique, he would frequently set up elaborate pranks or other schemes to get bullies into embarrassing situations, or to otherwise help ostracized kids get 'justice' against them. Danny was fortunate to rarely, if ever, be the target of any bullying himself, and was even a good friend to some of the school's victims. However, the faculty didn't share his same appreciation for retribution, so he often found himself facing large quantities of disciplinary action. A 3-day suspension during his 8th grade of school eventually lead him to drop the act, soon realizing that the increased maturity of his classmates reduced the frequency of bullying. After a quiet 4 years in high school, he graduated successfully with a 3.5 GPA. He was originally set on going to the City University of New York, but made a last-minute change when he had gotten a letter back from Roosevelt City University, one of his reach schools, telling him that he had successfully made it in. With his hopes high, he set off south to the new coastal city.

Of course, even preceding his departure for Roosevelt City, he was well-aware of the metropolis' tendencies for crime. He was also aware of some of the university's movements to help its students protect and even defend against criminal efforts, which was a large factor in his decision for applying in the first place. In any case, Danny seemed determined to turn his quieter attitude around at the university, and began to branch out in the new environment. He soon settled on his major in Chemistry after two quarters of interesting classes on some of the applications of biochemicals in enhancing human capabilities and curing injury. As summer came by, Danny was preparing to leave back for Amboy until he got an internship request from Ayus.

Chemistry Applied

Danny Miller's vacation in Millennium City.
His interest in biochemicals made Danny a prime candidate for a manufacturer for new chemicals. Ayus publicly carried itself as a manufacturer of robots and cybernetic prostheses, the latter of which would need proper chemical enhancements to allow the human body to properly communicate and integrate with. In reality, this was a cover-up for the Ayus' true agenda; kidnapping civillians, brainwashing them, and constructing them new bodies. These brainwashed cyborgs were then sent out by the Ayus to be sleeper agents disguised as normal humans, security robots, and even some of the Ayus' commercial products. The Ayus Clan apparently did a pretty admirable job in hiding their true intentions at first, because Danny had no idea about any of their hidden motives, and quickly took up their offer.

Even if the Ayus didn't have their ethical priorities straight, it was a very helpful learning experience for Danny in the field. His mentor, Dr. Thomas Barsad, made sure to show him the ins-and-outs of how to create specialized anesthetics and antiseptics, useful for applying cybernetics to 'patients'. Up until this point, Barsad has largely worked faithfully for the company, but his requirements to continuously lie to his pupil, combined with the repeated stress of being directly responsible for the brainwashing nanites he injected into victims' brains soon caused him to break up. On an August Friday evening, Barsad told Danny Miller all about the Ayus' true intentions. For nearly 15 minutes, Barsad detailed all the things that the Ayus had been responsible for, as well as what they could be possibly planning to do. Miller, initially being skeptical of his mentor, initially brushed his warnings off and headed back to the university.

The weekend that followed was sleepless for Miller. Even if he had doubted Barsad's story, the seed of doubt had been planted, and he couldn't stop thinking about it all; all the robots he had seen in stores and around town, even some of the citizens of the city. For all he knew, they could all be robots from this Ayus, silently watching and waiting in the metropolis, ready to strike at whoever the Ayus Clan needs dead. The fall quarter rolled in, and finally, Danny made his decision; he'd be leaving the Ayus with a bang.

Though Danny was naturally quite the tactician when it came to setting up traps, he was in no mood to waste time. He had been discussing the idea of defecting with Barsad for several weeks prior to the fall semester, and with one last urging, had encouraged Barsad to make his move. Barsad would go to the operation room to free his next patient, while Danny waited for some indication that he had done the deed. As planned, Danny's encouragement lead Barsad to release the 'patient' he was working on, right prior to giving him a dose of brainwashing nanites. This released patient would go on to use his newly-made cybernetic body to become Roosevelt City's Chisoku. Hearing the alarms go off, Danny decided to make a crude distraction. In rage, he began knocking over the chemicals within the Ayus' lab, breaking vials all over and coating the ground in a strange, fizzing soup of volatile biological compounds. Said soup also happened to be quite low in friction, and caused Danny to slip up and land face-first in it. With that, Danny accidentally inhaled a bit of the mixture, going into a coughing fit as he attempted to get out of the lab and to the street outside. He collapsed out of breath roughly 2 blocks away from the Ayus headquarters.

Recovery and Vigilantism

Mach runs fast enough to break the sound barrier twice over. It's a good thing that woman he's running past is already deaf.
When he was found and taken in to the hospital, it was a wonder that he was still alive, given that he had not been breathing for 3 hours. Even more amazing was how he had gotten 800 feet down the street from the HQ without being able to properly breathe or see. In any case, Danny came to, apparently still experiencing some remnant of last night's frantic events as his heart-rate skyrocketed. By some miracle, he had managed to survive the ordeal in the lab largely unharmed. The 'soup' he had made on the floor, however, had some fairly major consequences. Though x-rays and other scans showed no signs of fluid in Danny's lungs, he was definitely acting strange, with his hurried speech, quick walking and pacing, and his heart rate resting at around 92 bpm. Despite the initial, visible symptoms, Danny soon found himself able to calm down and thank the doctors properly. Though told to take it easy and given the offer to be driven home to the university, Danny opted to walk instead, and got back only 21 seconds after leaving the hospital.

His rest at the hospital had given him ample time to reflect on what had happened to him. Now realizing that he could move and process information must faster than other people, ideas began to brew in his head about what he could do with such abilities. On the flipside, Danny also began to plan the consequences that could occur if people became wise to his new abilities, and decided it would be best to hide his gifts for the time being. However, when he heard on the news about some of the advances Chisoku had made in attempting to stop the Roosevelt Security Family, his mind changed. After all, if other heroes were taking steps to fight the crime in this city, what would be stopping him?

Scraping together a bit of money from his parents, Danny went around town to put together a disguise that could both conceal his identity, and also provide a bit of functionality in a pinch. Danny then began to train his body up, working on his strength and endurance by day, and testing his speed and form by night. Soon after the fall of the Ayus Clan, Danny donned his outfit for the first time, taking up the name of Mach and heading out to do his first work as a superhero!

Mach's work is largely unsanctioned by the city, and while he has managed to get access to police channels through the offhand help of Akira Stone, most of his operations and interventions in battles are deemed by the city as illegal. Roosevelt City officials had initially placed high-priority on capturing Mach, but after realizing the futility of such an act, as well as witnessing his lack of real malicious intent to the citizens of the city, Mach's case has petered out a bit. Even to this day, Mach continues to work independently of any other groups in Roosevelt City.

Mach is most strongly defined by his strong sense of justice, his impressive lateral thinking skills, and his incredible impatience in some instances. Mach is willing to listen to new ideas or solutions to difficult problems, but pretty much only if you can explain it in less than 10 seconds; otherwise he just nods off. Though Mach has made some effort to be more outgoing, especially in his early years at the university, he has largely reverted to being somewhat quiet due to the increased time he has to devote to his job. Despite his tendency to try and help people who are victim to injustice, he is mostly carefree and calm about most surprises; a trait which melds well with his abilities to think fast and quickly form plans.

As an independent vigilante, most of the other superhumans in Roosevelt City don't take kindly to his operations. Of note is the Alpha Force, which has the fairly express order to try and subdue or track him if he ever appears. Given the team's inhospitable approach towards him, Mach has basically decided to treat them the same way, taking whatever chances he can to trick or mislead them. The best, he finds, is when he can immobilize or rend the Alpha Force useless as he does all the work, just to show the city that they aren't the only heroes in town. Would it be easier to just fess up and see if he could get a position with them? Probably. Would he do that? Given his natural tendency towards retribution, it seems fairly unlikely.

Combat Specifications

Mach not only hits fast, but throwing punches that travel at supersonic speeds causes just a tad bit of knockback. And injury.
Given his perception of time, Mach has pretty much been given all the exercise his body needs. He can lift up to 292 pounds, and can jump up to 10 feet into the air. His most outstanding physical attribute, however, is his speed; true to his name, he can be seen running up to 1800 miles per hour; well above Mach 2. In addition, if he focuses his strength, he can do a short dash at 275000 miles per hour, which is way too fast for the human eye to see. His endurance is especially laudable, as he can keep up a good pace for up to 12 hours.

Mach's perception of time is slower than that of the average human, allowing him to process information on the battlefield much more clearly and swiftly. This is an ability he shares with Chisoku. However, compared to him, his time-perception abilities are nowhere near as fine, and in general, Mach is much less precise in combat. Mach still is an impressive brawler, capable of throwing out both supersonic flurries of punches and impressively-charged wallops, flying fast enough to send enemies careening through the air.

Mach's only equipment is his home made Uniform. This tight-fitting suit is almost entirely decorative; even the flanges on the side of the head and gloves do almost nothing except to give it extra drag. However, the uniform's sunglasses are quite important to Mach, given that they prevent dust or other errant particles from flying into his eyes at supersonic speeds.

Even past all his speed and his impressive strength, Mach is fairly solidly human; he's no more durable than a standard human being, and though he does have impressive endurance, he also requires impressive caloric intake. Even if he is a champ at storing and using his calories, he needs roughly 3 times as much calories as a normal human being to keep functioning.
