The R H I N O or Robust High-Impact eNvironmental Observation suit was originally designed for investigation of dangerous environments where an unarmoured human would not survive. The original designs were stolen by ARGENT and were to be used to create a new armored battlesuit for it's operatives. Stefan van Niekerk, the original designer of the R H I N O system was able to infiltrate ARGENT and recover not only his designs (along with the ARGENT revisions) but also a prototype battle suit. During his escape from the ARGENT facility he was able to destroy the remaining records and prototypes; or so he thought. He has since discovered that while ARGENT had the information, VIPER was also able to infiltrate and steal the plans for themselves allowing them to create their own R H I N O armor.
