Ulric Harald Russell was born in Monument, Colorado, a "truck-stop town" near Colorado Springs. He was the third out of eight children born to Harald and Sofia Russell, well-established landowners and ranchers. The Russell family was close-knit and reclusive, preferring to interact with relatives rather than actively seeking relationships with others and spending most of their time on their own property rather than going out.
Rick was a stubborn, aggressive child who regularly caused trouble and picked fights at school and at home, especially with other boys. From early infancy he was prone to fits of violent, inconsolable rage. At age ten he confirmed his parent's belief that he had inherited lycanthropy when he became enraged in an argument with his younger brother Mats and fully transformed. His father managed to subdue him, but Rick lost his left eye in the fight.
Ulric's lack of depth perception made him unable to learn several important lessons from his father alongside his brothers, such as shooting and driving. Rather than let this time go to waste, his mother made him join her lessons to his sisters on hidden secrets and runic magic.
Over the next eight years, Rick continued to have occasional episodes of berserk frenzy. His mother and father were well-equipped to deal with him (and his brother Mats, who also developed the lupine gift) as they too were Ulfhednar, werewolf berserks, and were accustomed to protecting themselves and each other from their own rage.

Ulric lacked this experience. On a sweltering summer's day working with his family in the pastures, he began to feel dizzy and confused. Thinking he was suffering from heat sickness, he left his work and went to sit in the shade. A few minutes later he passed out.
