"People want a hero. That's not me. I'm the guy behind the hero, watching his back, and his every move."

Picture a soldier. Think of his skills, his training, his loyalty and sense of duty. Now make him invincible.

That is Captain Adamant. An armored soldier-turned-superhero, dedicated to the ideals of Freedom and Justice for all.

Captain Adamant embodies and redefines two phrases: Iron Will and Human Shield.

His is a mission that never ends, a patrol that never stops. When others falter, Captain Adamant stands tall, and keeps fighting. Unyielding in his reliability, steadfast in his loyalty, the Unbreakable Man stands guard over Millennium City, America, and all mankind.

But his armor protects more than his mortality.

"All my failures are made manifest in this armor. I've tried to learn from them, and so they protect me."

The man beneath the armor meets the world's challenges with quiet enthusiasm and a razor sharp focus, and insists on constantly testing his mind and body, almost on compulsion.

His name is Carter Williams, and it shows.

CapAdamantHeadshot.jpg

Carter is a tall, well built Montana son, with brown hair and fair skin. His eyes are dark brown. He's the picture of Upper Midwest manhood, though his grooming and apparel betray an affinity for big city culture. His hair, once at a constant regulation length during his service, is now at a more restful, civilian stage.

As for the man's body, chiseled would not be accurate. Carter's regimen is about functionality, not appearances. So while he may look the part of bodybuilder to some, any muscle mass or definition is purely a consequence of his training his body to work a particular way. That being, in large part, for combat. His approach is holistic and practical; instead of doing arm curls to improve his biceps, he might run, or climb a rock wall with a weighted pack. Obstacle courses, open sparring, hiking, and running are all meant to elevate his physical skills to their peak.

CapAdamant Workout.jpg

After his hard-earned physique, or his rancher's heritage, one tends to notice his demeanor: serious. In most cases, he is the strong and silent type, always saying just what he needs. Sometimes less. This is especially true during professional situations or when on-mission. He will almost always be the foil (or the foiled) to the more light-hearted, open, or wise-cracking members of any group. Always there is an objective, and it should be pursued without distraction. And if there isn't an objective, one must be found.

Even in casual interaction, Carter is often too quiet and serious for some. He is usually the last to crack a joke or a smile. He isn't quite humorless, but others may think so anyway. In fact, one difference between his casual and professional demeanor is that he often seems uneasy in social situations; unable to relax. It's as if toil, danger, and pressure are his natural habitat, where recreation and social interaction are difficult.

All this applies to his dreadnought of an alter ego, Captain Adamant. He doesn't terribly seem to enjoy wearing the armor, or using its abilities. It's his duty, not a flight of fancy. So if you thought a smile was rare for Mr. Williams, it may be impossible for Captain Adamant. So, fully armored, the Unbreakable Man stands at a very serious and imposing seven feet and two inches, and weighs in at almost a ton. The armor possesses a dull sheen, and is difficult to keep quiet. You'll always hear him coming.

The sound of the good Captain's armor spells one of two things for those who hear it: hope, or justice.

CapAdamantKoolAid.jpg

The armor consists of over fifty individual plates of Kendrium-Platinum alloy. Most of them are secured either by slots on the underlay beneath, or by large bolts that feature prominently across the surfaces of his armor. Just like he does unclad, Carter walks within his armor with a purposeful grace gained through years of honing his body. The armor hardly appears to hinder Adamant's movement at all, despite its size.

Powers

RAWR!
CapAdamantPowersBanner.jpg

"I want peace. So I prepare for war."

CapAdamantAftermath.jpg

Captain Adamant isn’t called "unbreakable" for nothing.

The “Hardwear Safety Platform” is a prototype suit meant for labor in hazardous environments, including outer space and volcanic regions. With only a few enhancements to its design, the Hardwear makes its pilot a veritable walking battle tank. Putting on the suit makes Carter almost indestructible.

The armor employs a unique (and top secret) Kendrium-Platinum alloy, making it astonishingly robust, but malleable enough to resist cracking. Hardwear metal is able to withstand fifty tons of TNT-equivalent, and temperatures in excess of two-thousand degrees Kelvin.

CapAdamantCyborgFight1.jpg

In addition to its resilience, Captain Adamant’s armor also lends him superhuman strength. The Hardwear’s undersuit relies on a layer of metallic liquid crystal, which amplifies force by a factor of five. This enables him to carry a ton of armor, and still have room to lift more. And yet, despite the armor’s weight, it imbues him with greater running and leaping capacity than a normal human being.

For short periods of time, Captain Adamant can use integrated rocket platforms in his boots to leap great distances, with substantial force. They're perfect for escaping compromising positions or closing distance with an enemy.

The Hardwear is intentionally low-tech, so as to circumvent the common problems of other powered armors. You cannot hack the Hardwear, and it is virtually unharmed by magnetism or electromagnetic pulses. Very basic hardware controls the suit's temperature, liquid crystal interaction, and communications. Other than those systems being directly and physically disabled, the Captain's armor is a difficult beast to conquer through traditional armor-busting tactics.

This marvel of engineering notwithstanding, Captain Adamant’s greatest assets are his willpower and training. Where others may blunder about with such a massive and dangerous piece of equipment, Carter wields the Hardwear with care and precision. When clad in the armor, he becomes a powerful ally and a terrifying enemy.

Weaknesses

Sometimes the low-tech wonder that is Captain Adamant's armor works against him. And sometimes, the armor just isn't enough.

The Hardwear is a unique prototype, and as such, even someone with Carter's dedication has trouble. He often finds himself uncomfortable with the amount of power at his fingertips, and underestimating the suit in general. Unlike other heroes who have his powers, Carter's first instinct is rarely to leap right into combat, arms swinging. Oftentimes this is of benefit to his allies, but just as well, situations call for it from time to time.

Weight is a constant problem for Captain Adamant. When a ton moves as fast as he does, damage to property and people is probable. So Adamant must continually regulate his movement and position, so as not to crash through ceilings, damage marble floors, or destabilize derelict structures.

Unless he equips a special filter attachment, Captain Adamant is vulnerable to poisoning, gassing, and drowning.

Because despite his sobriquet, Captain Adamant is still only human. He can't wear the armor all the time, and even when he does: he can be deceived, manipulated, and cheated. While resilient against mental attack, he is not immune, and is as powerless against magic as any other mortal.

Biography

RAWR!
CapAdamantBioBanner.jpg

"Duty. Honor. Country. More reliable, I think, than friends or family."

CapAdamant Captain.png

Carter Williams leaned on the sink, property of Joe's Bar in Queens. His head swam laps in a whiskey pool, but he was taking it better than his fellow graduates. The mirror ahead offered a literal moment of reflection. Eight shots and three bars in, and his officer's uniform was still as clean as it was at the ceremony.

And even in the dim, soft light of the men's bathroom, his Captain's pin gleamed.

It was years of work. It was his reward. It was moving forward, and never looking back. Carter Williams was now Captain Carter Williams of the United States Army. It was bizarre that it was now, right here, in a dingy restroom that it should strike him. It had all been a blur since coming home. And while his friends celebrated in the bar proper, Carter took the time to relish the moment with only his reflection as company. After all, in two weeks time, he would likely never see his friends again. Carter took exactly five seconds to come to terms with that fact. He had left friends before. He would do it again.

"Duty calls."

Allies

RAWR!
CapAdamantAlliesBanner.jpg

"You can't trust anyone until you've faced real danger by their side."

Captain Adamant keeps to himself, sometimes for good reason. But though his superhero career has just started, he's built a handful of relationships with his new allies: Eternals, Inc.

CapAdamant Colosso.jpgCapAdamant MisterFifth.jpgCapAdamant Citizen13.jpgCapAdamant Strobe.jpgCapAdamant Vanity.jpg

The Captain's other allies are military, like him. His civilian life is almost non-existant. Friends are a luxury and a distraction, and he only allows himself two at present. The first is his German Shepherd, Ajax. The other was his mentor, Colonel Frank Spektor.

Testimony

  • Strobe - "Personality needs work, but his heart's in the right place. At least he looks good while he bores me to tears."
  • Pulsar - "Cappy is a bit serious and he doesn't like my silliness very much, but I hear only great things about him, and I wish I could learn to be more focused like him in order to be a better hero."

Enemies

RAWR!
CapAdamantEnemiesBanner.jpg

"Redemption and execution are not our calls to make. We bring them in, plain and simple."

Sightmaster

SightmasterProfile.jpg

"Ever get the the feeling like you're being watched? That's me."

The self-styled "Untouchable Man", and, as he puts it: a "human panopticon". Captain Adamant first encountered Sightmaster in hologram form during another mission, as he bought information off an ARGENT desk jockey. It was purely coincidence that the Captain should ever run into him again, but he did just that, barely catching the supercriminal after he had infiltrated Force Station Steelhead. Ever since, Sightmaster and Captain Adamant have conflicted numerous times, each encounter growing more and more personal as the Untouchable Man finds himself foiled again and again.

He is marked by an obsession with the Captain, fueled by his greater obsession with secrets and hidden knowledge. Information trumps wealth, in his eyes, and he claims to know some of the deepest darkest secrets the world has to offer. However, his secrecy is double-edged, as he is loathe to reveal anything of his own. Even using his secrets for gain could tip others off, making him strangely unwilling to use his abilities and knowledge to their fullest, most alarming extent.

Sightmaster, as his name implies, is a master of visuals, in just about every way. The ultimate voyeur, and the pinnacle of deception, Sightmaster's powers include super vision, invisibility, and hologram manipulation. He gains these powers through various pieces of technology, and uses them to enable a lucrative, albeit eccentric career as an information broker and super spy.

Shock & Awe

CapAdamant Unknown.png

"This here's Awe. I'm Shock. We rob banks."

A truly dynamic duo of career criminals, Shock & Awe are best known for their high-profile marks and destructive tendencies. Though occasionally for-hire, Shock & Awe are loyal to no one, save themselves.

Awe is a natural-born telekinetic, able to project force with thunderous results, while Shock, unsurprisingly, is a natural capacitor, storing and wielding electricity at will. Their penchant for robbery, vandalism, and all-around discord often thrusts them into conflicts with the authorities and superheroes, including Captain Adamant. Vehement in their freedom and amorality, Shock & Awe always seem to be chasing the best score, and the steepest odds.

During a whimsical, though well-executed attack on a top-secret weapons transport, Captain Adamant, unbeknownst to the two thieves, lay in wait, as a contingency. The three did battle, almost destroying the convoy, despite the Captain's best efforts to contain the duo's wanton and rampant use of superpowers. But with the help of PRIMUS personnel, Captain Adamant subdued and captured Shock, where Awe was forced to flee the scene. Ever since, the Captain has kept close watch on the state of Shock's imprisonment: no doubt his partner will attempt to secure his release, and will make it a dangerous caper for all involved.

Colonel Spektor

CapAdamantSpektor.jpg

"We must wake from this American Dream. Let it be forgotten like so many others."

Colonel Frank Spektor. He was once a highly decorated soldier, and in deep with PRIMUS and its operations around the globe. A true believer in the potential of America, and equally fervent in his belief that his country has fallen from the path of excellence.

Now he exists as an enemy of the state. And where he was once Carter's mentor and friend, he is now a unfortunate nemesis.

Driven to turn against his country by an obsession with his own dreams and their prophetic potential, he eventually acquired terrible mental power during an accident at Psi Corp, where he attempted to secure the Oneiropticon, a prototype dream recorder. Now imbued with metahuman abilities, Spektor has acquired a loyal following of fanatic soldiers and seeks to discover a purer, grander America than has ever been realized.

The Colonel is able to manipulate the sleep patterns of most animals at will. He can also alter their dreams by entering them psychically, allowing him to influence, and sometimes outright dominate his foes. Spektor's power can cause lasting psychological damage, and is rumored to even be able to kill a person from within their dreams. His status as an experienced solider and skilled leader together with this new, terrifying ability makes him one of Captain Adamant's most dangerous and personal foes.

Tropes

RAWR!
CapAdamantTropesBanner2.jpg

"One shouldn't dwell on anything. Least of all comparisons to others."

  • Broken Pedestal - One of his most visible sore spots on an otherwise thick skin, Carter's former friend and mentor, Col. Frank Spektor, is now one of his greatest enemies. Where once the Colonel meant to guide Carter to a more meaningful and productive life, he now seeks to make him see the world as he sees it. To him, it's the capstone on a life of teaching. To Carter, it's insanity, and nothing makes him feel worse than seeing it twist his friend into a monster.
  • Hunk - Carter is a pretty good stereotype for all things manly. He's tall, strong, and handsome. He's driven and successful, serious, and has a few interests outside of his duties. Now, if only he would talk about them.
  • Dark Secret - One may get the sense that Carter isn't just quiet and serious because its in his nature. He hides parts of himself often, and not all of them are harmless. He may be hiding things that mean a great deal to him, or those around him.
  • Empathy Pet - Carter's only real friend is his German Shepherd, Ajax. Like most of his breed, Ajax is an intelligent, well-trained, and well-behaved companion. Carter recovered him from the wreckage of a bombing in Westside, and believes the two are kindred spirits. Ajax is the only "person" Carter allows himself to be vulnerable around.
  • Fights Like A Normal - No matter the power that the suit affords him, Carter can't help but engage his enemies as if he weren't wearing it. He still hasn't quite come around to relying on it, even if it does make him invulnerable. Carter always fights using form and strategy instead of simply bashing and beating his enemies into rubble, which actually makes him more dangerous. He even uses cover, from time to time. Old habits die hard, and even the simplest can still make an Unbreakable Man stronger.
  • Military Superhero - Carter was a solider before he was a superhero, and in many ways, he treats being a superhero the same. It's his duty, and nothing more or less. It's to be pursued with the utmost seriousness and dedication. This makes him one of the more reliable and steadfast members of the community. It also makes him difficult to get along with sometimes. And it means he sometimes finds himself torn between his loyalty to his country, and that of his new life.
  • Misery Builds Character - His past isn't dark so much as it is unfortunate. It certainly pales in comparison to the man that Carter is today. But everything he once was has shaped him. Much of it is the physical pain of training and war, but probably equal or greater in measure is the emotional strain he has endured.
  • Powered Armor - Carter's powers derive solely from his suit. And as robust as he is without it, in would certainly be a coup to remove him from it. It would be no small feat: the armor is meant to withstand everything from hard vacuum, to lethal radiation, or volcanic temperature. But take away the armor, and he is but flesh and bone.
  • The Quiet One - Carter isn't given to small talk, levity, or humor. It's not as if he's devoid of any of them, but he prefers straightforward, goal-oriented behavior. Carter believes talk is cheap, and action buys you so much more. He tries to be polite, but he's often perceived as harsh or cold-blooded to those he interacts with. That, or anti-social.
  • Secret Identity - Carter keeps what little personal life he has separated from his work. He likes his solitude, and likes his professional identity to remain just that. Even his allies do not know much about him. It took weeks for him to offer his name. It took even longer to appear without his armor.
  • Super Strength - Certainly not titanic like many of the caped metahumans flying around the city, but Captain Adamant sports impressive physical power. His blows can easily kill a human if he should allow it, and metal bends like rubber in his hands. Concrete cannot stop him, and in the hands of a trained killer (remember, he is a soldier), his strength can be more effective than the most powerful of bruisers.
  • Super Toughness - Even more impressive than his strength, Captain Adamant's foremost ability is that of physical resolve. He can withstand the harshest of climates, the most powerful of conventional arms & explosives, and then some. You might say he can take a lot of punishment, but it hardly seems appropriate as very few things he endures even leave a mark.
  • Teen Rebel - Contrary to his clean-cut, dedicated and motivated existence, and much unbeknownst to almost everyone, Carter was once a wild, emotional, and dangerous youth. He's not proud or even accepting of his past, and much of what he does today can be seen as an earnest attempt to avoid his past mistakes.

Trivia

RAWR!
CapAdamantTriviaBanner.jpg

  • Captain Adamant is department head of the Eternals' Internal Security and Operational Logistics, and is responsible for the safety and security of Eternals Tower. Questions or concerns relating to these matters can be brought to him.
  • Captain Adamant is career military. Veterans and servicemen/women earn automatic respect, though he doesn't like to talk shop.
  • Carter has an upscale downtown apartment in Millennium City. He also has a hunting cabin in west Montana.
  • Carter likes to hunt when he inevitably (and begrudgingly) takes time for himself. His favorite excursions are extended trips, where he camps, hikes, and tracks his prey for days, alone. More recently, he's taken Ajax along.
  • Carter is an above-average marksman, and obviously knows his way around weapons. But he doesn't enjoy talking at length about them, and dislikes gun nuts.
  • Carter can often be seen running or walking with his dog, Ajax, in the wee hours of the morning, or late at night.
  • When Carter's arms can be seen, one may notice strange, small scars on his inner arms, opposite the elbows.
  • Carter doesn't abide foolishness, carelessness, promiscuity, goofballs, ignorance, insecurity, or naivete. So if you want to get under his skin...
  • Sometimes it actually seems like Carter prefers the Hardwear suit versus normal clothing, even if he's uncomfortable with its power.
  • Training and discipline are paramount qualities in Carter's eyes. Possessing them gets you points in his book. Lacking them makes you irrelevant at best, dangerous at worst.
  • Carter eats healthy, but hearty. His two favorite meals are venison steak and lobster.
  • Carter rarely takes anything that alters his state of mind. But he enjoys coffee and liquor from time to time, in extreme moderation. Usually on his own time.
  • Carter's favorite season is Autumn.
