Gerritt de Graaf, better known as the "Vampirate", may have been an infamous criminal the likes of Blackbeard that plied the seas during the early 17th or late 16th century. Unlike other well-known pirates who were often real people, Gerritt is widely believed to have never actually existed. Historians attribute his legend as a gross exaggeration of figures like Vlad the Impaler, making Gerritt a sort of seafaring Dracula.

Though mundane accounts generally portray de Graaf as an unusually cruel and powerful man, more fantastic stories tell of a crew that literally thirsted for blood or a ship that turned the sea red wherever it sailed. Modern interpretations of the legend appear in the fantasy novel Seas of Blood, written in 1924, as well as the 2002 film Vampirate.

In truth, Gerritt was in fact a real pirate. He was subdued and captured in a vicious battle with the Royal navy. Due to the unusual circumstances surrounding his life and strange occurrences during and after his execution, Gerritt's true history is recorded in very few texts.


Act I: Jolly Roger

The dreaded Vampirate returns to the world and begins his mission to gather the pieces of his former glory. He starts by attacking the St. Augustine Pirate Museum in search of his flag and rival's journal. Fortunately, a small army of heroes show up to stop him, including Ryder Williams, Nightfang, Maverick, Quick Shrike, Earth Hammer, Katerra, and the amazing Funkgroovelizer. Gerritt's ghostly crew animates a small army of pirate manikins, wax sculptures, swords, and even plastic parrots, but the heroes fight them off and force Vampirate to retreat empty handed.


Act II: Something Fishy

The wealthy and mysterious Sir Henry Marsh hosts one of his famous mask parties at his estate in Innsmouth, Massachusetts. His classy guest list includes Grimoire, Architect, Galatea, and ((???)). Still on the trail of Vampirate, Ryder Williams and Nightfang attend incognito. de Graaf makes his appearance in an unexpected way, calling on Henry Marsh to repay his debt to the elder god Dagon. Henry chooses to sacrifice his servants and guests to save his own life. Fortunately the heroes intervene, once again fighting the ghost crew as they bring to life suits of armor, trophy animals, and ice sculptures while Galatea overpowers Gerritt. Though Marsh and his servants are transformed into horrid Deep Ones, most of the remaining guests escape with their lives and their sanity. Vampirate is once again forced to retreat, this time stealing the figurehead of his ship from Marsh's collection; a weeping mermaid.


Side Dishes I

Ryder Williams and Nightfang are joined by Danger Deer as they report to a bar-fight at the Landfish Grill. An altercation takes place on the docks with the bar's owner, Mr Lusca, a wereshark driven feral by the Bloodmoon. The heroes manage to subdue him and, with his mental faculties returned, he apologizes and explains his peculiar condition. Meanwhile, Vampirate's ghostly crew makes off with their ship's anchor which had been decorating the Landfish's wall. Lusca suggests that the heroes track down 'Wilhelm', possibly a reference to the author of Seas of Blood.
