Paladin (Chris Jameson)
Paladin is the name used by many superheroes. In this iteration, it is used by Chris Jameson, now called Shaventos, and was the first in Acenra's 'Paladin Legacy'. Chris Jameson is a character concept that has been redeveloped and reused over the seven years that creator Acenra has been writing, and will continue to be used in future superhero games.

History
Christopher Jameson was born in Oxford, England on August 16th 1989. The son of a doctor and a teacher, Chris was raised in an average home with his brother, Simon. Simon was three years older than Chris, and was taken to a private school at the age of six, so Chris never truly knew his brother.
Three years later, Chris himself was taken to the Academy of Norath, an arcane military school where they would educate him in the ways of magic, all in order to make a perfect soldier capable of upholding the balance of magic.
Chris spent twelve years of his life in their care, learning their values, becoming a soldier in his own right.
During his third year of education, Chris made contact with a lesser god known as Sha’lek. Her origins were a mystery, but the two soon created a divine bond, giving Chris the power and knowledge of Justice and Music. Sha'lek's personal contact with the boy was due to an overwhelming feeling of loneliness during his first few years at the academy. Theories suggest that either the goddess took pity on the boy, or that he has some form of latent ability to talk to those within the Astral Plane.
Being the first Academy Student to manage this in known history, Chris was encouraged to follow Sha’lek’s teachings, and become the first Paladin to receive academy education. When this proposition was brought to Sha'lek, she was was more than happy to oblidge.
Because of this, Chris spent the majority of his time at the school alone. He had no class mates to share the burden, no teacher to educate him as none of them knew the subject matter too well, and little resources to better his understanding. However, Sha'lek would provide as much guidence as she was allowed, even permiting a telepathic link to other paladins and priests in her fold.
However, during this time, he made friends with a young Amazon named Delilah. Her confidence and popularity became a protection for Chris’ social weaknesses, while Chris offered comfort and insight whenever she needed it. after a year, it was apparent to the Academy that the two were inseperable, and utilised this during Delilah's training as an assassin. “She was beautiful, Cy,” he would say in a conversation with Cylent Strike, “perfect form, skin soft as velvet and eyes you could get lost in. She was always a few inches taller than me, but I didn’t care. She was brave, a bit of a tomboy, and undeniably confident. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
During his education, Chris took part in the Academy’s Automaton Ritual, a process that created a second soul, which held no emotion and would carry out any task with top efficiency. Chris named him 'Paladin' for convinience, which started a slowly degrading relationship.
Chris’ time with Delilah created a feeling of attraction, possibly even love, but, with Delilah being an Academy assassin, and was trained to take down Chris in case he went rogue, they knew the relationship wouldn’t work, and thus, stayed as friends.
At the age of eighteen, Chris and Delilah graduated, maintaining loose communication. Chris was assigned to the USA, the major arcane hotspot of the world, and he began his career as a hero, named ‘Paladin’. The Academy provided funding and legal documentation, making Chris a US citizen. They also taught him how to hide his appearance through the use of minor magics, resulting in the blonde hair and glasses seen in his civilian form.
After spending three years travelling around the country, with most of that time in Chicago, Paladin made his base of operations in Vibora Bay, renting an apartment with a Kobold named Donny. While fulfiling the duties of of traditional superhero, Chris would also carry out his duties for the Academy. Shortly after shifting his attention to Millenium City, Chris passed the second rank exam and adjusted his outfit to better suit his fighting style.
Chris now regularly visits Club Caprice, more out of a desire to see the friends he’s made over that time rather than a general like of the place. In order to make some additional money, and keep his secret identity believable, Chris took up a job as a musician at a coffee shop in Vibora Bay. During his time as a hero in Vibora Bay, he has come to blows with his ancient counter part, the Black Paladin, wielding light against darkness with battles always ending in a stalemate.
Life at the Club
Chris has made many friends at Club Caprice, his closest being Cylent Strike and Myth O.S.. Due to his timid nature, he rarely approaches people on a whim, unless they appear to be upset or hurt. Instead, he will display his remarkable talent of being able to read a book in the chaotic noise of the bar. However, he will gladly put away the book and talk to those who take the time to speak to him.
During this time, he has received help from his friends, and he in turn has offered his own assistance.
Due to the current events within his life, he felt the need to refrain from pursuing a relationship beyond friendship. Reasons for this include lingering feelings for Delilah, as well as a lack of social confidence. “My life is a little out of whack right now,” he explained during a conversation with another hero, “I don’t think it would be fair on the other party if I were to date them, do you?”This policy was momentarily waived shortly after Chris discovered he had feelings for O.S., and attempted to ask her out on a date, only to fumble with his words. However, the two still mannaged to arrange an outing together, but possibly not in a 'date-like' manner. Under the impression that O.S. is oblivious to how he really feels, Chris began feeling scared and guilty that his actions may cause O.S. to become upset, and begins to question whether he is really the right person for O.S..
this soon changed. Shortly after confirming O.S.'s eligibility as a paladin, Chris talked to O.S. who said that 'he was like a brother who isn't Jack'. Slightly disappointed by this, Chris eventually stumbled through a confession. O.S. returned the feelings, but admitted that she needed to discover herself before actively pursuing a relationship, and was scared that she would hurt Chris if she did otherwise. During the outing to the museum, however, Chris and OS embraced their feelings for each other, and soon began dating.
After a short period of time, Chris and O.S. admitted their love for each other, and arranged for a date after Chris returned home from his Rank Three Exam. Chris returned, having passed with flying colours.
after a week of not hearing from OS, Chris spoke to her mother, Myth, who, after a long talk, convinced him that his relationship with OS would not work, and Chris, unable to talk to her in person, sent her a message explaining the situation, but ultimately leaving the fate of their relationship in her hands. He still hopes they can remain friends.
Within this same instance, Chris encountered Nihilum, an entity that planned to act directly against the Academy. After a short battle, Chris made his way to hospital for the night, since his powers could not adequately heal his wounds.
shortly after this, Chris encounted Roger Belmont, another paladin, and enforcer of the Phoenix God. Chris taught him the values of being a Paladin and took him on as a part time student.
The attacks by Nihilum increased in intensity. Using it as an oportunity, Chris enacted the Ultimatum and tricked Paladin out of the body and into a soul jar, which White Star Avenger Busta Move has possession of. The result put Chris in a coma, and he is due to wake up. In the mean time, his work is being taken by Roger.
Upon waking up, he immediately found himself in battle with Nihilum. However, his time in a coma allowed the Sha'lek and fourteen other gods to form a pantheon, and dub Chris their Highlord of the Paladins, Clerics and Priests within this alliance. Despite this, his time in a coma caused him to become tired and even with the assistance of Captain US, he could not prevail. He returned to hospital to rest, and permanently made Roger the new Paladin.
Chris' time as the Highlord allowed him to see how powerless those with great power can truly be, and he began to understand that there were things that he still could not do.
OS returned to the city for a vacation from the UNITY base, and the two talked over the break up. The two are once again good friends, Chris even promising to become OS' wingman. Within that same day, Chris and Tech Knight talked over some possible feelings that have been developing since the coma, and the two started dating, though, this relationship was short lived, and the two returned to being friends shortly after Gearhead and Thirtyseven's wedding.
After hearing about a demon attack on OS, Chris started to have feelings for her once more, but finds it hard to cope with them, due to his obligations as her ex-boyfriend and now best friend. After a period of contemplation, Chris found that he loved OS, but also made sure to do right by her. He would continue to tell others that he would always love her, and would do anything in his power just to make her happy.
it recently became apparrent that Sha'lek had fallen ill, and after a long period of searching, the other gods could not find a cure. After a brutal screening process, it was decided that Chris would ascend and take her place. A week later, Chris broke the news to everyone, thanking them for being his friends. The one person he hasn't told yet is OS, and Chris still dreads the day he'll have to tell her.
Moving from the World
With the days drawing closer to his departure, Servios, the god of Infinite Wisdom, decided it was now among the best times to inform young Chris of the truth behind Sha'lek's demise.
Waking him from his slumber one night, he guided Chris to Archmage Robert Caliburn, and the two opened a portal to The Parterres, where Servios himself resided. For the first time, Chris and Robert had laid eyes on the form of a god. Servios informed Chris that it was wise to bring Caliburn with him, so he would be better prepared if this incredebly rare occurance was to happen again.
Servios then showed the two a vision of Sha'lek, who, thousands of years ago, wasn't a god at all. She was a lowly mage wandering ancient Africa when she came accross the resources and knowledge to move to the astral planes. For the next hundred years, she travelled, spending another two hundred attempting to move past the Veil of the Temple before finally accomplishing a task no mortal, mage, god or wiser being ever thought possible: a novice mage finding and reaching Da'Ath. When she arrived there, she found that she had the power to create anything... but paniced. Just as the spell was cast, her mind was focused on Justice and Music, hence the odd combination, and became a Fake God, or 'Ardent Being' as it was later decided. While she was bound by a majority of the rules most gods were (such as the Ban), she was not reliant on followers (being created and sustained by another source entirely), but suspectible to other causes of death. The reason for her demise was not a simple one. There were two possibilities, one being that the universe was due to regulate itself, or a malicious being had assassinated her. Either way, with her dead, and her domain still existing, it was still required of Chris to depart. The god and the two mages discussed all concerns over this, as well as the implications that came with being an Ardent Being, and effectively, an abomination of reality.
Chris agreed, and asked to spend the rest of the night doing two things: one, learn all he can about the multiverse, and two, spend time with Sha'lek. Servios agreed, and informed Caliburn that if they wished to keep the mortal realm safe, they would have to do what they could to prevent another mortal from finding and entering Da'Ath.
Chris learnt during his time with Sha'lek that she had seen injustice countless times when in the mortal world, and felt pasionately when she cast the spell that made her what she is now.
On the 9th of January, Chris ascended, becoming Shaventos, and taking the now dead Sha'lek's place. After many heartfelt goodbyes, he turned to the portal, entered, and left the mortal world until he was able to make an avatar
"It was said that it rained non-stop in the city for a week while the new god wept over the life and loved ones he had left behind. Shaventos, the saddened deity, would continue to weep, but never once disregard in his teachings, continuing to guide his followers through his way of life, a way of life he learnt and cherished during his final few years as a mortal. He would forever defy the usual stereotypes of the gods, becoming a servant to mankind, instead of a master." - first line of the scriptures of Shaventos
Powers
Chris' rank as Highlord within the Martex Pantheon's mortal agents, the highest rank possible, and is due to ascend to god hood. Chris has academic knowledge on gods, magic, demonology and an extended knowledge of the Multiverse at large. He also wields a variety of powerful magics, his power being supplied by fourteen gods and one ardent being. This tremendous boost of power involves magic spells (Commanded by power words said in plain english like 'Bind', 'Maelstrom', 'Freeze', 'Burn' etc.) and physical boosts, giving him speed, strength and skill far beyond that of even the most powerful of super beings. Not bad for someone so young, hm?
Chris is also a skilled martial artist, mastering Shotokan, Aikido, Tai Chi and Kempo. Coupled with acrobatics, Chris is one of the more agile heroes on the planet. While enforced as a back up in case of power loss, Chris tends to use his martial arts more than his powers, though he does integrate the two abilities.
Chris is also somewhat skilled in minor surgery and psycho-analysis.
Chris has the ability to analyse an individual's soul, but only for determining their current location, their identity and whether they are telling the truth or not. This does not work as a mind reading function. While Chris is aware of any soul in the nearby area, in order to actively know their identity, he must ask them in person, then dedicate that knowledge to memory.
Weaknesses
Without all his powers, Paladin’s physical state is on par with a human athlete, meaning that he isn’t as capable as many stronger or faster heroes if left with no powers.
Chris can be too trusting as an individual, and will often find himself distraught or heart broken when friends turn to enemies.
Chris also lacks social confidence, especially in terms of intimate relationships.
Due to his oaths as a Paladin, Chris cannot lie. If he does, a wound on his left hand appears, as a form of punishment.

Inner Torment
(Resolved):
Chris and Paladin rarely get along. Chris’ emotional depth and Paladin’s ruthless logic mean their ideologies and methods differ dramatically. Over time, Chris has learnt to loathe Paladin’s very existence, but feels helpless without his assistance in the line of duty.
Several weeks ago, Chris had a dream, a disjointed series of images that showed him, at Club Caprice, fighting with the rest of the patrons, including close friends. While he wasn’t able to determine the cause or the outcome of the conflict, he could remember that despite his actions, he was yelling at himself to stop; this lead to the assumption that the Paladin would eventually find a reason to enact justice on the heroes at the club and take over. Chris discussed the matter with Myth O.S., who assured him that the disturbing vision would not come to pass.
Chris continued with a state of scepticism and fear, but eventually entered a mental discussion with Paladin, and the two of them agreed on ‘The Ultimatum’, a private pact that would be carried out when the two could no longer co-exist peacefully. When enacted, all tasks must be dropped, and the two go through a series of trials to determine who has rightful possession of the host body.
An attack by Nihilum caused Paladin to lash out at other patrons of the bar, just as the vision predicted. Chris, using the fight to his advantage, enacted the Ultimatum, purposely losing, and giving Nihilum enough time to enact a final attack and effectively kill off the body. Paladin was transfered to a soul jar given to Busta and Chris, now back in his body, was comatose in Mercy Hospital, waking up three days later.
Chris contacted Arkosh, a soul eating Demon, who devoured Paladin and prevented his return
Why, Why, Delilah...
(Resolved):
Recently, Chris was called upon to locate and study a Necropolis thought to be below Millennium City. The necropolis itself was thought to hold the bodies of thousands of former Academy students, and if this was true, the bodies were to be transferred to the Academy for burial in their own tombs.
Chris was sent the assistance of Yojimbo, a Runic Knight, Garrek and Norrak, a fire mage and a necromancer respectively, and three assassins, one of which was Delilah.
The mission lasted six hours, after which it was declared a failure. Due to the long time the Necropolis has been around, the bodies and souls of the departed began to rise again. Each and every member of the task force perished, either by the undead, by their own hands, or by the hands of the other task force members, sent insane by the ghosts and wraiths. The only two that remained were Delilah and Chris.
While Chris was able to bear the mental burden, with Delilah being his ‘inspiration’ for doing so, the Amazon assassin couldn’t keep a firm grasp on reality. Eventually succumbing to her madness, she attacked Chris. Scared, Chris let Paladin take over, who, recognising that the fight couldn’t be won, fled the Necropolis, sealing and consecrating the doors with Delilah still inside.
While it took a while for Chris to move on from the incident, he still feels guilty and conflicted by the whole ordeal, almost going as far as to leave the Academy. However, he soon resumed his life, the events almost leaving him a changed man. He now regularly makes sure that everyone is ok, offering his advice whenever it is needed and a shoulder to cry on in case they are depressed, as well as being willing to fight off any form of potential danger, no matter how powerful it may be.
Recently, Chris recieved a letter, saying 'We End This. Now'. With Myth O.S., he travelled to a mine, finding Delilah alive and in the process of resurrecting Ghost Veil. Escaping before the mine collapsed, Chris and O.S. made their way back to the bar, where he explained everything to her.
Now he searches the world, hoping to bring Delilah back.
Chris recently talked with Sin Reaper, in hopes that his powers to control reality would be able to cure Delilah's insanity. He said it was possible, but doing so would require a debt to be paid: either a blood debt or four weeks in complete servitude. Without hesitation, Chris oblidged, saying that it would be a deal if he could find Delilah.
After a few more encounters with Delilah, her becoming progressively more agitated by her failed attempts at killing Chris, A final confrontation was devised. Chris recieved word from Delilah that she was planning on ending things, and that soon, they would have to meet face to face.
Chris teamed up with Captain US, where they ventured into the Alien Arena. There, Chris found Delilah, altered with cybernetic implants. Delilah was taken down, Chris knocking her out by tearing out one of her implants. Assuming her dead, he took out his rage on Shadow Destroyer. When he returned to find the body for burial, it was gone. Chris continues his search, though saddened that he was capable of nearly killing Delilah.
Chris returned there with Salamander and Willow Ashendale, and this time, Delilah was apprehended. Sin made good on his word and cured her instanity, and now, Chris visits her at Stronghold every other day to try and patch things up.
All work and no play...
(Resolved):
Chris is currently studying for his upcoming exam, which could determine if he can become a Rank three warrior, and thus permitted to work outside the schedule of the Academy while a Rank two or lower warrior is assigned his work. Becoming an independent agent allows more time to do what he wishes, perhaps causing him to become more relaxed and more confident socially...
Paladin returns to earth on the 15th, now a Rank 3 warrior of the academy
Fate, for it is a Cruel Mistress
Sha'lek has fallen ill, and the rules of the gods state that for every domain, there must be a god. Therefore, after finding no possible cure, and discussing it all for a long period of time, Chris was chosen as her successor.
He broke the news to everyone, and thanked them for being his friends.
The date of his departure is he 9th of January, at 3pm (server) at the Blimp.

RP Hooks
Now that Chris' days are effectively numbered, it's a given that a lot of things will result in his innevitable departure. As Chris' day of leaving draws ever closer, new RP hooks will present themselves, and are free for anyone to use (though make sure to ask permission first, eh?).
1. A New Prey for an Old Hunter
Mechanicus and Chris haven't seen each other in a long time, especially since the villain has now accepted that perhaps the blonde haired Brit is out of his league.
However, it obviously has had more of an effect on him than usual. Never before had anyone been able to outwit him longer than the Paladin. It's like gambling. Winning is all well and good, but what gets you hooked is when you lose. You just don't know when you quit.
Mechanicus will now look for a new prey, one worthy of his time.
((send me a message if you want Mechanicus to be one of your villains))
2. A Torch to be Passed
((Resolved))
With Chris' departure, Roger feels that he cannot do any better than his old mentor. After much discussion, he decides to return to his old title, and has asked Chris to find a much better suited individual to take his role.
Chris now scans through a list of candidates in order to find one suitable for the role.
His 'Legacy' has extended to Jason Phillips, who was officially made Paladin after a successful mission stopping the Envoy of Morbia.
3. Redemption of Demonica
As a final gift to one of his closest friends, Chris is successfully having Delilah pardoned for her crimes and released from jail.
Delilah, now anticipating her freedom, needs to start a new life, find a new home, and make new friends. If she learnt anything from Chris, then she'd start her search at Club Caprice
((send me a message if you want to play as Delilah Demonica))
4. A Blade That Sings a Song of Heavens
Some sharp-eyed players may have noticed the blast of light that ran from the portal all the way to Canada. Following this trail will lead them to a beautifully designed longsword burried in a snow filled crater if they choose to investigate
((send me a message if you'd like more details on the Songblade of Shaventos))

the Black Paladin: (Champions Lore character (see source book Conquerers, Killers and Crooks)) Giles De Morphant was the most viscious, ruthless killer in the family De Morphant, having bested many of King Athur's best Knights in the past, even being a match for Lancelot, the intervention of the nun Elaine hadn't healed Lancelot's wounds and allowed the fearless knight to best the villain. Ressurected in 1993, Black Paladin now wages war against the modern knights of today.
What others say about Chris Jameson
(feel free to add your character's thoughts on Paladin (Chris Jameson))
"Let me tell you something, Jack. My friend is twenty one, he's hot, he's intelligent, and he always does whatever he can to help out the ones he cares for. He's had a rough time, and now that he's just mannaged to make a decent life for himself, what happens? The one he considered his mom becomes terminally ill, and now that he has to take her place, whatever life he had is forcably being torn from him. He'll be doing a duty he doesn't want, using power he doesn't need, all the while being held by some barrier that will only allow him to watch when his friends are suffering. Now tell me, man, where the hell is the justice in that?" - Delilah Demonica
"Chris is dying?! Well damn. And here i was about to show him my secret stash of porn collection! HAHAHAHA! *Quickly looks around to see if anyone listening* Dying eh? Can't say you deserve it...but hey, you becoming a god, we might see each other more often, though..heh....You might be inclined differently. Anyhow....yer a good man Chris. Now, i don't frequent the place as much as i used to, but if you're still around...make most of it, and by that , i mean you better give OS something to remember you by! Heh. See you on the celestial side. " - Sin Reaper
Author's Notes
Before anyone says anything, I am aware that there are several player characters, both roleplayers and casual gamers, who have used the name Paladin. I never noticed that Champions didn't have a unique name system until I met one of the other 'Paladins' in the game, and by that point, I was level 20. (considering how much the word 'Paladin' was integrated into RPGs in general, you can imagine my surprise when I found that the name was availible)
the history and relationships with other characters are based entirely on my already faltering memory, so if there's something wrong or amiss, it's not me being a jerk, it's just all I can remember ^_^
As said at the announcement, I will be leaving Champions Online in the near future, and searching for Greener Pastures in DC Universe Online. Admittedly, I was skeptical about this departure. I didn't want to leave such an amazing community behind. Never before have I felt so accepted. Seriously, it was a total blast.
The decision for ascension is something that wasn't exactly the first thing that came to mind. When it comes to a hero spontaneously disappearing from the game, there are several reasons. I first thought of killing Chris off, but with the community here being so good, I would want to have the capacity to visit, and thereby let Chris have the same liberty (since, well, I only really ever played Chris, it wouldn't feel right to me.) I then thought of having him move away, but when the transport in the game can go on a global scale in a matter of seconds, simply being too far away became less of a tangible excuse (especially since he makes the commute from Vibora to Detroit everyday). By that extension, I couldn't have Chris just retire, since he got his powers through a dedication to his deities, one that one would carry out 'til the day he dies, and he wouldn;t have his powers, so he couldn't visit the club. It soon dawned on me that Gods themselves require followers because they can't interact with the world, thus making ascension more of a drawback than a bonus (this fact backed up by Champions Lore) but access to avatars allowed temporary visits. I was tentative at first, because, well, it's godhood, but then, yeah, it was really the only thing I could think of.
When I found that people will more than likely be turning up on the RP servers of the PS3 port of DCUO, the deal was kinda sealed. If there was not going to be an RP community on the PS3, then I would have stayed on Champions Online until I had a better computer. That, and I am a bit of a DC fanboy, so I probably would go for the game even if it was bad.
Again, I'll make sure my departure is significant, and if anyone wishes to follow me to the realms of DCUO, I'll make sure to put my server and character names right here.
the release date for DCUO in the UK is January 14th, and Chris' departure is on the 9th. His departure will also go off with an almost litteral 'bang' (...get your minds out the gutter. Geez...)
As an added bonus, I've done some adaptations, and now, Chris fits in more with Champions Lore. YAY SOURCE BOOKS!
Edit:
Huh... well, it's been two days since I got to playing the game. No RP, and it keeps crashing... hm... something tells me Chris' departure may not be so permanent after all. Only the future will tell.
Combat Notes on the Chris
these are just a few additional notes you may want to read up on when encountering Chris.
RP Combat
Due to the plot events that have recently taken place, it is best not to fight Chris. If confronted in the bar, he will do nothing while a forcefield absorbs all attacks. If actually provoked, he will attempt to end the fight as quickly, painlessly and efficiently as possible.
Duels
actual game duels will be somewhat different. Due to the unique way the player plays the game, Paladin is specced for too many stats, and will more than likely be an easy fight. The build was originally focussed on Dex and Con in order to completely utilise the Martial Arts/Celestial power set and make a character that could dodge well and take a substantial amount of damage. Otherwise, damage is somewhat poor and healing (due to lack of presence) is mediocre. The build works surprisingly well in PvE, but PvP, not so much.
Trivia
1. Due to a mispell of the word Refill, Chris is the accidental inventor of an alchoholic energy drink (a minor meme that was pushed along by player @RWMagpie)
2. Nym, one of Chris' friends has dedicated a corner of the bar to him. Aparently there's a plaque with 'Paladin Corner' on it near one corner of the bar, due to his habbit of standing there on many occasions. Due to the ascension to Highlord, Chris passed his mantle of Paladin to Roger, who used his powers to change the plaque to 'Jameson Corner', believing it would be more appropriate.
3. During an IC raid of Therakiel's Lair, Chris used Parry to destroy Therakiel Statues. he is now considered capable of kicking eye-lasers back at the target, while no one, including himself for that matter, is sure how and why it works.
4. Chris' scarf isn't a normal scarf. No one knows where it comes from, what it is or who made it, or even why it's so long. However, the reason why Chris has mannaged not to have it caught on something and get strangled is that the scarf itself has no real physical form. Chris dubbed it 'Ghost Scarf', since things that try and snag it, whether by accident or on purpose, simply pass through it as if nothing were there.
5. Chris, surprisingly enough, is now a psychiatrist officially appointed by the owners of Club Caprice.
