ORIGIN
Life as a Colonel
An army Colonel sees his young infant son maimed during the attack on Detroit in 1992.
Committed to helping his son, he joins a secret division of the American Army that is experimenting with regenerative stem-cells, (to heal amputated limbs and other battlefield injuries).
Many years later the technology is bearing fruit. However, Lord Venom steals the technology and they force-feed the latest experimental concoction into the Colonel's gullet, mutating him into a horrible monster.
In his rage, he kills everyone, which tragically included his own wife and son. Dejected and despondent he lives in exile, until Justicar convinces him to redeem himself by fighting crime and exacting revenge on VIPER.
Citing "Pinocchio" as an influence (it was his son's favorite movie), he takes the name 'Monstro' (after the behemoth monster in the tale that swallows Gepetto).
Life as a Renegade
Life as a renegade does not go well for Monstro. He is loathed and despised by the public for killing his wife and son (he got off on all charges when a jury deemed him mentally unfit to stand trial). Two key defendants in the case are Justiciar and Osprey.
After being released, Monstro is hunted by VIPER and in particular, sought after by Lord Venom. He has no job, no money and lives on the streets: hated, hunted and feared by all citizens.
Captured & Rescued
Life as a renegade is not kind to Monstro. After many months living on the run, he is captured out in the desert by Lord Venom. He is then dragged to a Genetics Lab fronted by Lord Venom and new vicious experiments are conducted on him.
It is believed he was infused with DNA from several sources, including the DNA of Herman Bloom as well as several other strange hybrids of DNA. It is also believed Monstro was injected with steroids and chemicals.
At the time of Monstro's capture Lord Venom and VIPER are at war, (stemming it is believed from Lord Venom using exorbitant amount of VIPER fund to finance his obsession with Herman Bloom).
To gain some of VIPER's investment back, they raid Lord Venom's lab and steal Monstro. VIPER hope to brainwash Monstrointo servitude, but before they could leave with with their quarry, Genesis League comes to the rescue.
After his rescue, Monstro is destitute and fully aware that both VIPER and Lord Venom are eager to capture him.
So he agrees to use Genesis League as a sanctuary. He is also aware that Osprey had stood up for him during the murder trial and feels he could trust Genesis League.
PERSONALITY
Monstro is a bitter, angry and cantankerous old man. He trusts very few people, and refuses to talk about his tragic past. He will become indignant with anyone who dares to question him on his history, or calls him by his real name.
Monstro, isn't without a heart and shows signs of basic kindness, but his trust must be earned, and without that trust he regards all living creatures with suspicion. His humor can also be cruel.
Monstro has a superb work ethic, and a military mind focused on discipline, order and respect for authority. He despises all criminals, but most especially has a hatred for VIPER that burns deep in his heart.
CHARACTER INFLUENCES
Monstro takes much of his influence from Pinocchio, both in name and in his tale of redemption, through conscience, moral empathy and responsibility.
Monstro also is heavily influenced by any "tragic monster" tale ever spun, of which the influences are many but would include: Frankenstein, Hulk, Thing and Boo Radley.
APPEARANCE
Monstro appears as a massive red reptile. He is covered in small, hard scales and has sharp talons at the end of his fingers. He sports a massive spiked tail like a Stegosauros.
He is over 7 feet tall and weighs nearly 500 pounds, yet he moves with great speed, grace and agility. He is known to do acrobatic flips while he fights, using his long tail for both leverage and balance when necessary.
He is extremely strong, capable of lifting a pick-up truck, and capable of throwing boulders great distances. He can leap 30 yards with very little effort.
His face still holds some semblance of humanity. Although it is a deep red and covered in reptilian scales, his mouth and eyes still retain a human quality. Those who read facial expressions well, will quickly see the "human" deep inside Monstro.
Monstro talks with a low, gutter dialect, which often has people convinced he is stupid or uneducated. In fact, Monstro graduated from West Point with honors in the 80's. He seldom, however shows off his academic prowess and now regards most scientific research with suspicion.
