Backround
The Kingdom of Vhujaral rejoiced when the Princess Yenihtrix was born. So beautiful, so elegant, so sweet. The king and queen were proud of their child and did everything they could do to ensure she succeeded in life. They educated her in the arts, reading, and astrology. Her mother taught her everything she needed to know to let her beauty shine and her father taught her what must be done to rule a kingdom.
More then anything else, though, she was taught to love her subjects and that the ones you love are the ones you treat with respect.
She often practiced this with the many dolls that populated her room. She would preach decrees and bring peace to her land. It was thought she would be a wonderful queen of many talents.
Then, one day, she was witnessed her first execution. It was that of a young man not much older then she. He was charged with dozens of accounts of theft and a single count of murder. She watched, her young eyes wide as the blade severed the head of the young man like a knife through butter.
She asked her father why he had to die.
“Every beautiful land like this has imperfections, my dear. It is our job as rulers to make this land as pure and perfect as possible.”
A few months passed, the image of the young man dying flashing in her thoughts constantly. The more she recalled it, the more she remembered. The blood dripping from his neck, his eyes staring at her and her alone as they began to cloud, the tears drying on his skin. It was so vivid. So real.
But reality did not hit her until she heard guards talking amongst themselves.
The boy was innocent.
A mistake was made.
She returned to her room and remained there until the darkness of night.
She stared at the dolls all around her. Dolls her parents got for her.
Imperfections. They were all imperfect.
That doll was the wrong shade. That doll's eyes weren't set right. That doll looked at her wrong. That doll was ugly. That doll was too short. Too tall. Too skinny. Too wide.
They had to be punished.
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! TO YOU WHO DARE DISRUPT THE KINGDOM OF VHUJARAL! I, QUEEN YENIHTRIX DECREE! OFF WITH YOUR HEADS!
And so their heads fell. One by one. Once she was done, she thought. And thought. Her parents! They rule this land! Under their watch, the wrong man was killed! The imperfections still roamed the land. They still infested it. Made it less then beautiful. Made it wretched.
They had to be punished.
She stalked to the kitchen and found a clever. Collected the head chef's clothes and slid them on as well. Off to her parents room she walked, her face set for what must be done.
Through the secret entrances she slid, her finger rapping the wood of the large blade's handle. Finally, she entered the room and loomed over her parents. Their sleeping forms unaware of the justice about to befall them.
And so she did the deed, loud, powerful words echoing through her mind.
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! TO YOU WHO DARE DISRUPT THE KINGDOM OF VHUJARAL! I, QUEEN YENIHTRIX DECREE! OFF WITH YOUR HEADS!
The rest was simple. She hid the clothes and clever in a special little spot in the kitchen. Burned them a little to give the illusion that someone tried to burn the evidence. The head chef had to be blamed.
She could not bring peace to the land if she was not made queen, after all.
The guards found her parents. Dead and butchered. Their heads hanging outside the window, set up just right so when they were found the heads would drop to the stone below.
The outrage blinded the poor fools. Imperfections. All of them. None were smart enough to see through the ruse of a child. A plan thrown together at the last minute to save the kingdom from itself. But it worked. It was not long before a proper crown lay on her head.
Her first decree was a simple one. She knew of the food they served here. It was never perfect. There was always something wrong. Ham too tough. Chicken too lean. Mashed potatoes too lumpy. Bread too crunchy.
They had to be punished.
But her subjects would not understand this. They knew not of the imperfections that infested this land.
So, obviously, the kitchen staff must have been conspiring to kill her parents.
In the blind rage of the public, such a thing was not difficult to swallow.
And so her voice rung out over the gallows as one by one the heads fell.
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! TO YOU WHO DARE DISRUPT THE KINGDOM OF VHUJARAL! I, QUEEN YENIHTRIX DECREE! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!
But it did not end there. The imperfections grew and grew.
The gardeners.
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!
The entertainers.
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!
The stable hands.
TO YOU WHO DARE DISRUPT THE KINGDOM OF VHUJARAL!
The carriage drivers.
I, QUEEN VENIHTRIX DECREE!
The servants, every single prisoner, and even the executioner.
OFF WITH YOUR HEADS!
It was not long before the only imperfections in her home were her guards. This was fine. They were a necessary evil. Men and women completely devoted to her and her alone. They did not need to understand her reasons for things. They did not care.
For her, they were willing to pick up the slack. To cook and manage the stables and serve her wishes. They were not as good as the old ones, but these imperfections were tolerable. They would listen to her.
But those things outside the castle. The majority of those out there were imperfections. And those that were not were too similar to those that were. That boy who died was so similar to an imperfection that it fooled even her!
The decree was put out.
All are to leave the Kingdom of Vhujaral or face execution. So says the Queen.
The next day she sent out her army. More loyal to her. Many would say brainwashed...she preferred obedient.
To her surprise, the army returned and took defensive positions. And then they came.
Hundreds of them. Commoners had come to lay waste to the perfection that was her castle! That was her! She gave the order.
Blood flew. Man against man. Woman against woman. Child against child. None were spared.
She laughed as they came, confident of her victory. Glee filled her as heads rolled.
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! TO YOU WHO DARE DISRUPT THE KINGDOM OF VHUJARAL! I, QUEEN YENIHTRIX DECREE! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!
But the glee did not last. Her troops became overwhelmed. It became obvious to her that the freaks would be upon her soon. She could not let them have her perfection.
To the tallest tower she climbed, the sounds of combat echoing below her. It was not long before she reached the highest point and slid her head into the contraption.
The door flew open as the leaders of the resistance stormed in to see her in a guillotine like contraption. She smiled sweetly and said this:
“My dears, I am sorry but this will not be your victory. For I am certain of this. In life there is nothing but disaster. But in death...there is nothing but perfection.”
And so the blade flew down and removed her head, activating the many explosives she had installed around her castle.
For if her perfection could not reside in the castle, then no imperfections would ever have it.
So as her head fell and her eyes filled with the fire as the world fell around her, she let out a silent laugh.
The Queen of Madness finally fell. Her kingdom naught but ash.
