Sauricas are humanoid avian mammals originating from the planet Aegle.
Physical Description
Sauricas are roughly human-sized, each with a pair of wings capable of flight in adults. Their bones are hollow, which would make them lighter than a human, but their muscles are denser than a human's, making them heavier, as well as more physically durable and able to lift or push greater weights than a human on average.
An adult saurica's wingspan is usually twice their height.
Culture
The sauricas from Aegle wear lightweight clothing, with soft metals such as gold often worn as jewelry. Heavier metals are reserved for weapons and architecture.
A warrior culture is deeply ingrained in their entire planet's history, and their global government is supported by a military composed of gladiator marines. Gladiators prove themselves in local or national combat tournaments, and enter the military only after making a name for their self. Wearing armor is considered cowardly, and high-ranking officers wear little more than a helmet and a bit of fabric for modesty.
Relations
- Sauricas have limited contact with humans. Birdman and Sparrow were among the first to make contact with Earth, and have since become Earthling superheroes.
- The saurica are among the species the Ganthorian glorgs have declared war on.
- Aegle is a recognized allied world of the IDDSS.
Genetics
Sauricas evolved from a spined reptilian race who resembled small dragons. Researchers refer to these primitive peoples as the Ornithidites.
There is a rare genetic mutation which can occur in sauricas called Ornithiditism, also known as Anikkir's Syndrome, in which the affected person has scales instead of feathers covering their body, and leathery, membranous wings instead of feathered ones. They appear reptilian on the surface. Sufferers of Anikkir's Syndrome can have difficulty achieving flight and often face ridicule and a stigma of being "less evolved" or unintelligent, but in reality it only affects the development of feathers and wings. A known supervillain, Tyranno Gold, had this condition, as well as the superhero Prismatica.
Sauricas cannot reproduce with other species. Though relationships and even marriages have been recorded between sauricas and other humanoids, they cannot create their own children.
