Early Days

James was a very gifted individual even at a young age. He was one of the few children in the country to be accepted as part of an advanced tuition project, inviting youngsters with gifted minds to start more advanced educational curriculum's considerably earlier than your average child would have. He was only ten when he was starting to learn about advanced molecular structures and by fifteen he'd built his first robot, a design he used to help his father with chopping and carrying firewood whenever they went camping. When it came time for James to fly the coup and go onto higher learning, it was no surprise to anyone in his family that he decided to enroll at MIT. It was here that he would meet two of the most important people of his life. Daniel Bishop, an equally bright student who would go onto becoming his "rival" (though James never showed any interest in Daniels vendetta, he just wanted to learn) and Lauren Schmit, the woman who would in a few years time become his wife and mother to his only child, Melissa.

A White Dwarf is Born

Having lived a privileged life but understanding that there is still great suffering in the world, James put his mind to helping the benefit of his fellow man. His stellar record and charisma saw that he had no trouble getting funding from larger corporations to bankroll his research. The core of his ideals was to try and find a new power source for the world to thrive on, one which was completely renewable but also cost efficient. Many attempts had been made by other scientists that seemed fruitful, but James himself was never convinced. He wanted to try something unique, something totally unheard of. But unfortunately, this dream of his was so far fetched that even with his shining portfolio no one would give him the money. So, disheartened and disappointed he resolved to working on the projects of other companies, of other bright minds. Working in the background to bring someone else's dream to life. It paid the bills and gave his new family a comfortable life style but it was never enough for him. And it wasn't a secret either. Several years into his career James was approached by a representative of a company which at the time wished to remain anonymous. In his right mind, James would have simply declined the offer that they had, but the bait was too tempting to leave alone.

The company in question was called Solar Industrial, one of the worlds largest advocates of solar energy as a primary power source. The job offer? To accompany a team of researchers in testing experimental equipment for higher yield solar power extraction. It was as if S.I. had reached into James' mind, plucked the very idea he'd been working on for so long out of his mind and then offered it to him on a piece of paper. He couldn't pass it up, jumping at the contract offered and signing it without a second thought. It would prove to be the biggest regret of his life.

What followed was months of arduous physical training to prep James and the rest of the science team for space travel. It was hard work, and a drastic change from his previous daily routine but he was determined to see it through. His mind would wash away the pain and stress of the constant exercises and tests with the excitement he had over finally accomplishing what he had sought to do for so long. So excited was he that he never even bothered to request seeing the equipment he'd be testing before hand, not even a chart with test data was brought to his scrutinous gaze before the day he had to set off to space. All he knew about the mission came from the briefings he'd received and the manuals that were handed out in between. The anticipation had consumed him, leaving him to make mistake after mistake during the preparation period, it was now too late. He had to go on with the project by contact, whether he knew what he was doing or not. Luckily he would have time to make up for his mistakes during the shuttles long travel time to their target zone. Several thousand miles away from the suns surface.

James' part in this ambitious expedition was simple, he would be testing an experimental safety suit, designed not only to withstand the immense heat given off by the sun but also to shield electronics from the powerful waves of electromagnetic energy that are commonly dispersed during a solar flare. All the tests that could be safely performed had passed "with flying colours" he'd been informed back on Earth. Though on the day he actually wore the suit himself he began to think that may have been a slight exaggeration. Seconds after leaving the safety of the shuttle whilst wearing the suit, near enough all of its safety features suffered catastrophic failures. The immense amount of energy that was released by the solar flare they'd predicted was far more than the suit could handle, so much so it overloaded the electromagnetic shielding and actually caused it to invert, sucking in all that power rather than repelling it. For a moment as James was stuck, immobilized in this suit, he became a conduit of raw energy, the glow of his form even outshining that of the sun as light burst through the shielded visor of his helmet, leaving the onlooking scientists in the shuttle confused and bewildered.

Amazingly, James had somehow survived this bizarre mishap, and was promptly brought back into the ship and locked away in the medical bay under close supervision. He seemed fine, better than fine in fact. He seemed healthy and happy, as though the incident that had happens just hours ago had all been a surreal dream. Although the ships medical examiner could detect a change in James' biology, it could not diagnose it with the equipment they had at hand. This lead to the combined decision of the flight crew to turn back to Earth and abandon any further testing of their equipment, after the previous cases glamorous failure.

The Dark Side of a Star

On his return to Earth James and the other researchers were put into a week long quarantine which was not too dissimilar to that which the first astronaughts to visit the moon had to endure. Seven days living in a cramped, sealed space resembling a motor home which to James felt like an eternity. After all the trouble he and his team faced in their trip he just wanted to go home to be with his family. For those seven days all time passed at a higher level, seconds were minutes, minutes were hours. It was almost torturous. But eventually the quarantine was ended and James was escorted to his final medical examination. His body bared no visible deficiencies, internal or external. He seemed the picture of health. Only problem the examiners encountered were the frequent static shocks they would get whenever they went to touch James. It made the process much more difficult but at the time doctors thought nothing of it, thinking that James may have rubbed himself over with a cloth to build up a static charge on his skin as a prank. The long quarantine was enough to leave any man deprived of joy so it was to be expected some may act out a little to liven themselves up. Once the doctors gave the crew their green card they were escorted to a hotel in the nearest town to stay the night until their return to their homes could be arranged. For James this simply meant calling his wife to pick him up, since luckily the hotel was in his home town of Lansing.

That night he called from the hotel and spoke with his wife Lauren and Melissa, their daughter, before she had to go to bed. Having been away from his family for so long, James was overjoyed to hear their voices, and more than a little surprised by how much Melissa had grown since he last saw her, her voice having started to develop and being able to form a conversation, it touched him deeply to be able to speak with his daughter like that for the first time and he couldn't wait for the following morning. So eager he was to hold his daughter and kiss his wife, he didn't sleep a wink. He just lay their on his bed with a large smile, fantasizing over when he would be reunited with his loved ones in a few hours. Unfortunately, the tender moment he dreamed about would not come to be...

The following morning a sleep deprived James stumbled out of the hotel lobby and onto the sidewalk, looking around in his sleepy haze to try and find his car. Suddenly all he could hear was the joyful screaming of Melissa as she leaped out of the car and charged for her father, arms held out ready to hug him. As any father would, James dropped down to his daughters height and held his arms open to receive her, lifting her up briskly and holding the young girl tightly against him. But in this moment, something changed... He screams, they were no longer of joy, but agony. Tears could be felt wetting James' cheek as Melissa cried, by the time he realized what had happened it was already too late. The screaming had stopped and the tears had evaporated, the busy city street had fell silent. When he finally had the courage to open his eyes James was greeted not with the warm smile of his beloved daughter, but instead the charred, pained expression of her burnt remains. The neighboring pedestrians looked upon the scene in horror as this man clutched onto the flesh-less figure and cried in anguish, while the mother just watched in a catatonic state, unable to fully comprehend what had just happened.

Days later and James was stood outside the graveyard watching his daughters ceremony away from the crowd. He dared not partake in her burial, not when he was the reason that everyone was gathered in this depressing place. Instead he hid behind a tree and waited for everyone to leave, watching his distraught wife with forlorn eyes as she remained in her vacant minded state. He couldn't dwell on her feelings now though, he needed to see to his precious daughter, the light of his life. Approaching the grave, it finally hit him what had just happened. He had killed his daughter, despite all the love, care and adoration he had for her, he was the reason she now slept six feet under him.

X-pelled Mutant Academy

Most recently in James' life he has accepted a job as a teacher at the X-pelled Mutant Academy. His classes to date have been varied and spontaneous, as he can never decide on what topic to cover. His most popular classes however have been his "Mutation Discipline" sessions, where he encourages students to speak openly about how they feel about their powers and tries to identify any dangers each student may face as a hazard of their mutation. The topic takes a top priority to James, as he knows all too well what sort of damage can be caused when one unwittingly or unknowingly utilizes their powers in every day instances.

It was while here at the academy that James met Eira Seren, a Lemurian student with a bright mind. Developing a friendship with the young girl he started to involve her in some of his research, most importantly the work he'd been doing to try and "correct" his own genes so he would have full control over his powers. Before meeting Eira, James had not been able to so much as touch another living creature without discharging huge amounts of energy, the result always leading to a fatality. But with the help of Eira, James was able to finally conquer his affliction and safely alter his DNA, restricting his powers from instinctively shocking anything he touches and giving him back his social life. Since then, Eira has remained one of James' favorite students and is occasionally invited to help him with other research lines and referred to other students and staff who require the aid of a young genius.
