Appearance
Nemi looks to be a small girl roughly in her mid-teens, with large, sunken eyes, a wide sharp-toothed smile, dark lips and eyesockets, unusually pale skin and vividly red hair. Her appearance has varied considerably between her various public appearances; at one point, her skin was bright blue. At another, she appeared to be a small shark-like humanoid. Nothing about her appearance suggests any physical aptitude or extraordinary capabilities, but for her luminous orange eyes and peculiarly clawed fingers and toes. Careful inspection indicates that her claws are actually extensions of the bone in her hands and are quite sharp. They would be well-suited for fighting were they more than half an inch long.
Onlookers have noted that she seems particularly jumpy and hyperactive most times. She has a pleasant, if high-pitched voice with a faint Irish accent, though she rolls her Rs and Ss quite strongly for some perplexing reason.
Origins?
The official story reads that Nemi was born to Brianna Ravencrofte and an astral entity named only as 'Jackson'. At the time, Ravencrofte was in the body of a demoness, and she passed many of these demonic traits to her daughter. The peculiar part about this is the fact that Ravencrofte claims she and Jackson conceived Nemi through 'spiritual intercourse', supported by Nemi's strong resemblance to her mother. The reason for her demonic traits are unknown.
She lived with her father for most of her life in an as-yet undiscovered mid-Astral realm. There, she claims to attend a school called Dreamlands High, though how much of this is fabrication and how much is truth is questionable. Roughly one year ago, she appeared in the physical realm and reconnected with her mother, with whom she now lives full-time. Jackson's fate is unknown, though Nemi claims that she visits him frequently.
Less well-known is the fact that the unusual method of conception attracted the attention of a very powerful, very ancient, and very alien astral entity known as a Mnemovore. Through some as-yet known means, the entity implanted a tendril of itself into the newly-conceived proto-Nemi, in effect serving as her soul. As a result, the girl manifested extraordinarily powerful abilities concerned dreams, memory, perception, and pure astral power. In exchange, the Mnemovore uses her as a proxy by which to feed. It is a win-win situation for both.
Psychology
Nemi is an unusual individual, both for her physical and metaphysical nature and for her peculiar psychology. In short, Nemi is of dubious mental health and capacity. At many times, the girl seems dense, irreverent, and even borderline mentally deficient, yet at others she is uncannily brilliant and insightful. Most of the time she is rather childish but can be fiercely protective of those she likes.
Her predominant mood is one of joy, whimsy, and mischief, which is thoroughly expressed--and sometimes inflicted upon others--through use of her powers of illusion, creating semi-real objects and creatures with Astral power. Yet at the same time, she can become incredibly depressed, lethargic, and passive within moments. One can only imagine what living in the Astral for so long had done to her psyche.
It is believed that the Mnemovore has a personal interest in preserving Nemi, both as a food gathering tool and as a means to experience the physical realm. In times of great duress the alien entity has sometimes gifted the girl with extraordinarily ability to channel Astral power, or filled her with great hunger and directed her to feed. In the one case where an individual attempted to kill Nemi, she was instead whisked to the Astral plane until she could be summoned back to Earth.
Hunger is a significant guiding force for Nemi. The Mnemovore feeds through her; both passively picking up stray dreams and memory and more aggressively draining from the dying or from those who attempt to engage her with violence. Her Mnemovore hunger tends to worsen in times of great duress and lessen in times of peace. In one instance, Nemi devoured remnants of Qlipothic creatures and her Hunger skyrocketed out of control. It is recommended to keep Nemi far away from any creatures or items from the Qlipothic Realm.
Powers and Abilities
- Astral Connection: Nemi has an extremely strong tie to the Astral. She can transfer more of herself to the Astral to become temporarily intangible, or to rapidly travel between locations on Earth or elsewhere.
- Devourer: Nemi is able to sift through and consume thoughts, dreams, and memories from individuals. This is typically very imprecise, only sapping stray thoughts and dreams that would have been forgotten anyway, but she is able to retrieve memories from individuals through direct contact. She may be able to glean details of the memories, thoughts, and dreams she siphons, especially if she focuses on gathering rather than devouring. She can sometimes draw immediate thoughts from opponents' minds to briefly stun them.
- Tendrils: Nemi may sometimes manifest long tendrils of Astral energies, actually an extension of the Mnemovore itself. She can use these to draw more power from the Astral as well as contact points for use of Devouring.
- Astral Channeling: Nemi can draw upon unspecialized astral power to cause devastating harm to opponents. It often flares off her body when she is engaged in battle or highly excited.
- Mnemonic Replication: Nemi is capable of replicating activities others have performed that she has gathered from memories. This typically only applies to magic, as she has significant raw power but little refinement on her own.
- Dream Generation: Nemi can manifest dreams in her surroundings. These can take almost any form and can be quite remarkable-- often resulting in small-scale reality alteration. However, the effects are rarely permanent and only pseudo-real at best. She could create a truck, for example, but the truck would not be able to plow through a wall. She could make a gun, but its bullets would burst harmlessly into sugar on impact.
- Otherworldly Vision: Nemi doesn't see the same things most people do. She can see-- and track-- individual's Astral presence, or lack thereof. She can often determine if a being is a supernatural or other unnatural creature at a glance, and gaze into the very workings of a spell or enchantment. However, she's pretty dumb, so it's very difficult for her to explain what she sees to others.
- Nemi appears not to be affected by suffocation, pressure, poisoning, or a host of other common ailments in the normal manner. Typically, their effects will either be neutralized or enhanced in some comical manner, yet without causing real harm.
- Nemi has no training in magic or combat styles and is physically weak, although quite quick and agile. She is remarkably tough, however, and can withstand tremendous amounts of damage before being banished to the Astral or disapparated.
- Nemi likes technology even if she doesn't understand it.
- Nemi possesses remarkable knowledge about numerous topics, although she cannot access much of it at all times. It is possible that she receives what she knows as stray fragments of memory.
- Nemi knows whatever language the person she is speaking to is using. Most of the time this is English. In spite of this, she has a faint Irish accent at all times.
- Peculiarly, Nemi has not been labeled a major threat by most international groups. She has been ignored by most every major power, villains, or hero group, and has yet to be targeted or otherwise engaged by any such groups. The reason for this is unknown.
Weaknesses and Limitations
Nemi's most obvious weakness is that for the most part she is a childish idiot. She is rarely able to focus on a given serious task, often instead getting up to mischief or playing games instead. She can often be easily misled, tricked, or convinced to action.
Despite her significant durability, she does not have the massive damage resistance of other individuals, and can easily be banished to the Astral under sustained attack.
Nemi is a beacon of Astral energies and would be very attractive to any entities that feed off such energies.
Nemi is a bit of a coward. If she is unable to annihilate an opponent immediately, she will typically flee. As she doesn't often fight, this rarely comes up.
Nemi is vulnerable to most weapons or effects that can harm human beings.
She is extremely dangerous for telepaths and mages to work with, as she sometimes may unconsciously attempt to devour them. Direct telepathic connection with her is close to suicide.
She does not feel particular devotion to ideals of justice, truth, or other heroic paradigms, and typically only acts for selfish motivations. Fortunately, her motivations are typically benevolent.
Nemi and the Qlipothic
When most creatures of the Realms encounter the Qlipothic, they are either consumed, converted, or driven hopelessly mad. Some can channel it to an extent, such as the highest members of DEMON, but they are irrevocably tainted by the process. Nemi, however, can handle the Qlipothic in limited amounts. She has been seen to consume Q-stuff and Qlipothic beasts and, while she became a much more active feeder and developed symptoms of addiction, no massive mutations or spirit-death or alteration seemed to have occurred. Her behavior changed and she began extruding tendrils more frequently, but that was the extent of the changes.
The fact that she can contact-- even consume-- Q-stuff with minimal effect is highly disturbing. Some mages posit that Nemi, or the Mnemovore creature, actually jettisons Q-tainted spirit-material, and Nemi's rising hunger is a side-effect of the Mnemovore needing to bolster its form. This would explain her greater hunger as more Q-stuff is consumed.
She claims to be able to survive short times in the Qlipothic itself. This is unconfirmed, but not unlikely; however, the results may be extremely hazardous given her need to feed in high amounts after even small contact with Q-stuff.
Affiliations
Nemi is a member of The Prometheus Union, though she has not done terribly much for them.
Friends and Allies
Nemi is the daughter of Major Brianna Ravencrofte and step-daughter of Lunatic End. She currently has a relationship, if rather innocent, with Decade. She has numerous friends in the civilian, superheroic, and supernatural circles of Millenium City.
Enemies
Nemi has no particular enemies, although she is often at odds with the Qlipothic and any of its inhabitants.
Miscellaneous Facts
- Nemi's hair colour is naturally red with blonde ends. How this happened is anyone's guess.
- She is an honorary Selkite, small shark-like humanoids from elsewhere.
- She enjoys collecting small trinkets and souvenirs from around the world.
- Although Nemi often rolls her Rs and hisses her Ss in an exaggerated manner, she does this delibrately and it is not part of an accent.
- Most individuals she encounters find her irrationally adorable. She isn't terribly sure as to why. Most people aren't terribly sure, either, seeing as she has large sunken glowing eyes, clawed hands, and is a parasitic cosmic horror from beyond.
