Hey, fellow heroes, Lilly here. Tori Just – You must know her by now - She has the ability to fly at nearly the speed of light, but I ask you to consider the implications of a human that can fly at near light-speed speeds. It is time to explore the science of Tori’s Celerity. But first, a question: How fast can Tori fly, officially?<br><br>Well, this brings up an interesting idea; Tori’s – and really any fictional character’s – power is completely determined by whoever is writing them, so basically I can say she flies at the speed of light. But, according to Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, that would mean Tori either has no mass or uses infinite energy.<br><br>Both options give me a headache, so, let's stick with the possibilities that don't break physics.<br><br>At the very least, Tori can achieve near light-speed velocity, but that’s still a pretty high number. So instead, to make it easier, let’s stick to the speed of sound, which is 768 MPH, or 343 m/s at sea level. This is otherwise known as Mach 1, and each multiple of that speed is Mach 2, Mach 3, and so on.<br><br>Some real life references might be helpful; The record for fastest human goes to Usain Bolt, who can run up to 27 MPH (12m/s). The fastest land animal in the real world is the Cheetah, which has a top speed of 75 MPH (34m/s), or about 1/10th of Mach 1. And the fastest animal on the planet is the Peregrine Falcon, which, in a full dive, can reach 200 MPH(89m/s), about 1/4th of Mach 1.<br><br>So, it turns out that there's nothing in nature that really comes close to Mach 1. So, what effects might breaking the sound barrier have on Tori? Well, Tori is about the same weight and height of an adolescent woman, so, let's treat her as such.<br><br>On October 14th, 2012, Felix Baumgarnter became the first, and still only, human to travel faster than the speed of sound without the aid of a vehicle. You can try this at home by skydiving from a height of 39 KM. Felix reached the speed in an atmosphere that was thinner than what we experience at sea level, meaning that the speed of sound was slower where he was. However, he still achieved Mach 1.24, so, his experience yields useful data. For one, there was no undue stress on him caused by breaking the sound barrier - Felix didn't even notice it.<br><br>People don't feel velocity, we feel acceleration, which is a change in velocity. If you're traveling down the highway at a constant speed, you'll feel the same force as you would sitting on a park bench. But, come to a sudden stop, and you'll feel that change in acceleration. Roller Coasters can accelerate people at up to 2 or 3 times Earth's gravity, known as a "G." Military pilots are conditioned to handle combat maneuvers at up to 7G, which would make most people black out.<br><br>Attributing to the fact that Tori can move from a rested position to a near light-speed velocity instantly, we can conclude that she can go from 0 to Mach 1 in about 0.04 femtoseconds (rounded up) without fear of losing consciousness. That holds for slowing down, too. And here is where it becomes really interesting; It takes your brain 1 centisecond to process with your seeing, but because Tori moves faster than your eye can see, You literally won’t see her leave. What you will see, in that 1 centisecond, is that she is frozen in time and would gradually redshift until she eventually disappears in front of your eyes.<br><br>And, if there's one thing people know about supersonic travel, it's the "sonic boom".<br><br>An object creates a series of pressure waves when it moves through the air - much like a boat in water. These waves travel at the speed of sound, and, as the object, itself, breaks the sound barrier, they're compressed into a shockwave cone that travels behind the object.<br><br>Plane's often cause sonic booms, but would Tori, herself, cause a sonic boom? If we go back to good ol' Felix, he gives us some insight. He did create his own sonic boom, but, it was a relatively quiet one. There exists a figure to characterize the intensity of sonic booms, called the "Figure of Merit." Anything below a value of "1" is considered an acceptable level of annoyance to observers. The concord, a supersonic passenger jet, had a value of 1.4. An object the size of Tori, or Felix, approaches a figure of merit of "1" only in close proximity - within about 5 meters or so. Outside of that, you probably wouldn't hear her “sonic boom” at all. A human simply doesn't displace enough air to be a wide-ranging disturbance.<br><br>Another question involves Tori talking at Mach 1 and beyond: Would you even be able to hear her? Tori, herself, and any friends traveling at the same supersonic speed next to her, would not be able to hear her at all, since Tori would be moving faster than the sound escaping her mouth. Everyone's ears are situated in front of the sound wave cone.<br><br>For stationary observers, anything Tori says would be compressed into that shockwave, and just add more noise to the previously discussed sonic boom. Besides, at Mach 1, she wouldn't be able to say anything intelligible anyway. In the time it takes you to finish this sentence, Tori would have already travelled one mile. Doesn't make for good communication, does it?<br><br>Another thing to consider is that high speeds, heating due to air friction, or more specifically; drag, becomes a concern. If you stick your head out a car window going down the highway, you've met drag-force.<br><br>Basically, air is dense enough to push back on any object that enters through it at a high speed and that work done can create heat. The question is, is this heat significant enough to effect Tori?<br><br>As speed increases, the drag-force that an object needs to overcome is squared. Take an object the size of Tori and this force can reasonably be fully converted into thermal energy. Using that assumption, Tori would heat up at a rate of +37°C/s (+67°F/s).<br><br>Now, this is a rough number and doesn't account for factors that would make Tori cooler or warmer, like convective cooling through the atmosphere, or adiabatic heating, respectively.<br><br>One could convincingly argue that the heating Tori experiences would only be a fraction of this because of the cooling effect caused by the wind whipping by her face. But, it gives us a good idea of the forces that Tori needs to work against when reaching Mach 1.<br><br>The real life effects of such heating can be seen with the SR71 Blackbird. It generated so much heat while flying at Mach 3, that its titanium skin plates were designed with gaps in between them that actually leaked fuel while sitting at rest. But, this design allowed the heated plates to expand during flight and fill the gaps, ensuring supersonic travel wouldn't tear the skin apart.<br><br>So, with all that in mind, I have one more question: How much energy would Tori expend to run at the speed of sound? Everyone knows that jogging is a great exercise, so, hey, Mach 1 probably really sheds the pounds.<br><br>Well, there are two really relevant forces at work here: The first is the energy Tori uses to move her body - literally fly up and go. Using a Harvard health study that shows calories burned while running, we could extend that data out from 10 MPH to 760. Granted it's very sketchy to extrapolate data, linearly, that far, but, it's the best approximation I've got. Also, I’m going to assume the body burns the same amount of calories while flying as while walking. After all, your body needs to burn energy to keep it in the air and moving.<br><br>That said, we could expect Tori to burn about 2500 calories if she flies at the speed of sound for 2 minutes, but this is in a vacuum state. If we were to apply it to the real world, that darn drag-force means that Tori must expend more energy the faster she goes simply to push back against the air. The power needed to overcome this force is cubed as speed increases. And, since power is the rate at which energy is used, we can find the energy needed in calories, as well.<br><br>So, to overcome air drag, Tori needs to burn an extra 210.000 calories every 2 minutes. To put that in perspective, Tori would need to consume 686 hotdogs every time. That's almost 62,000 M&M's, or 386 Big Macs. Hopefully Tori has a good appetite...<br><br>With all this in mind there is one more thing I wish to share with you guys; What would Tori see while traveling at near the speed of light? We're used to seeing science-fiction scenes where people travel at the speed of light, seeing all the stars just rush past them like in Star Wars, but would it actually look like that? Well, sadly, no. If you were to travel at the speed of light, or near the speed of light, the destination ahead of you wouldn't look like it usually does. First of all; your field of vision would vastly increase - it would appear as if your destination was receding away from you as you accelerated, and here's why; As you sit there, not moving yet, looking at your destination, there is still light coming from stuff behind you. But, as you accelerated to near the speed of light, you will actually reach that light coming from things behind you. As you reach near lightspeed velocity, at the same time all of the light reaching you would blueshift until you were left with [http://images.gizmag.com/inline/hyperspace-0.jpg <span style="color:#4682B4">'''This'''</span>]. ― Tori Just
Tori is a character I've been developing for little over a year now. She started as a race similar to Frost's Nemesis, Cosmos, but she gradually shifted into her own race that was more noble, and yet just as dark. Over the course of her story, her race got a name; The Densorin, while Cosmos' race is still undetermined. The Densorin are a technologically advanced race that span an immense empire across the galaxy which encompasses many other races, mostly as indentured servants. Other races that they deem as "Unworthy to be collected into the empire" are exterminated outright. Tori is a pure-blood Densorin born in Liëta, Densoria, which is the capital of their homeworld. She was concidered a promising individual that was to succeed her father in the Densorin's grand army. However she became aware of the immoral actions of her race and eventually betrayed the Densorin Hierarchy when she decided to spare Humanity and join their side. Tori is a bit clichéd in the sense that she has superman-esque powers and she comes to Earth and grows accustomed to our ways in a hilarious manner. Although she comes off as an excessively polite and generally upbeat person, she can get very serious when it comes to defending her believes and ideals and she's very protective of people under her care.
- Lillian Vanwynsberghe
History
Many years prior to Tori’s conquest of Earth, she was mortally wounded in a fierce battle against a particularly dangerous enemy. The Densorin Hierarchy knew that her death would crush the morale of her father, who was a general in the Hierarchy’s army. The Densorin Hierarchy ensured Tori’s survival and deemed her worthy of recognition for her actions against this dangerous opponent.
Embracing this honor, she vowed to conquer a thousand worlds for the Densorin Hierarchy. The numerous conquests Tori has fought have altered her view of the Hierarchy’s ideals. Unlike the others, she has become aware of the immorality in the Hierarchy's conquests and feels shame for what her race has done. In addition, she shows disgust for the Overseers and her father’s use of soldiers as tools of ambition, although she never openly admitted it, only telling her ship’s AI about her doubts.
Sent to conquer humanity by the Hierarchy, Tori Just came into contact with the dangerous enemy she met so long ago. During her hunt for this opponent she befriended heroes from Earth and together they were able to take him down. After seeing humanity stand against such a dangerous opponent, even sacrificing their lives to protect the innocent, Tori deemed humanity worthy of choosing their own path in the universe.
Fearing the Densorin Hierarchy, she decided to stay on Earth. However, one day the Hierarchy will sent another to Earth to check on Tori’s progress. She prays that day never comes.
Power and Abilities
Power
Ergokinesis: The power to manipulate energy. She can create, shape and manipulate energy, one of the basic quantitative properties describing a physical system or object's state. It can be transformed (converted) among a number of forms that may each manifest and be measurable in differing ways. The law of conservation of energy states that the (total) energy of a system can increase or decrease only by transferring it in or out of the system, thus the total energy of a system can be calculated by simple addition when it is composed of multiple non-interacting parts or has multiple distinct forms of energy. Common energy forms include the kinetic energy of a moving object, the radiant energy carried by light and other electromagnetic radiation, and various types of potential energy such as gravitational and elastic. This power is a route to nearly every power, some are more likely to be achieved than others...
enhanced strength: The power to exert great strength from their muscles. She has the incredible ability to defy weight limitations. Dense, lengthy, or overweight items are easy to move and simple to use in nearly any manner. She can crush, lift, throw, or catch items of great weight.
Celerity: The power to be faster than what is naturally possible. Tori has mastered this superpower and can reach near-lightspeed speeds.
Abilities
Ergokinetic Combat: The ability to fuse physical combat with energy. She is able to utilize Energy Manipulation with her physical combat skill, channeling energy through parts of her body or use the energy for defensive purposes.

Flight: The ability fly without any outside influence.
Weaknesses
- Sui Generis manipulation nullifies energy, making this her hard counter.
- Her Celerity can’t go past the speed of light.
- Must be in physical contact with the energy blast for Energy Absorption to have effect.
- Users with Absolute Strength are still stronger then her.
- Her Omnilingualism isn’t perfect.
- Although she has Decelerated Aging, she’s still susceptible to Age Manipulation.
- Tori cannot survive in the vacuum of space and therefore needs a ship to travel interstellarly.
- Pain Suppression only applies to physical pain.

background:
Vendetta is an extremely ambitious Densorin that desires great power, both political and physical. Vendetta is ruthless when concerned with increasing his rank within the Hierarchy, earning his unusual title from his habit of making political enemies "disappear". He apparently used this "talent" many times against those who have stood in his way during his rise in the ranks of the Hierarchy.
Unlike his daughter, Vendetta views his troops as existing only for the expansion of the Hierarchy and, therefore, deems them fully expendable. Vendetta views the Hierarchy's extermination of other races as merely "thinning the herd" and shows no regret for his race's actions.

Conversations
Humanity's Bravery
[Space. Tori is sitting at her spaceship's computer. It looks very spartan, clean, sterile... With holographic screens and keyboards. It seems to be running scans over the planet Earth. A face appears on one of the many screens, this is the ship's AI; Vigil. He talks to her with a calm, unemotional robotic voice.]
Vigil: I have found Cosmos.
[One of the screen showing Earth pans the globe to an area in the center of Monster Island]
Tori: What's the situation, Vigil?
Vigil: The sentient presence attempted an assault on Cosmos' base only a moment ago.
Tori: What do you mean... "attempted"?
Vigil: Casualties are projected at 85%.
[A moment of silence rushes by. Tori is obviously struck with sadness by the news.]
Tori: Humans die bravely, don't they?
Vigil: And needlessly.
Fatherly Ideals
[Millennium City, noon. Up above the cityscape, Tori fights Vendetta and during their combat a discussion enseus.]
Vendetta: I deem the chance to destroy a race a chance worth taking!
Tori: Or is it just another chance to impress the overseers? How many more must die to your ambitions, father!?
[Vendetta punches his daughter so hard she flies through several buildings and crashes to the ground, leaving a small impact crater. Vendetta flies to her and grabs her violently.]
Vendetta: Why do you fight me, Victory? Humans don’t deserve to live...
Tori: They deserve to choose for themselves!
[She punches her father which prompts him to grab the arm she punched with and pull her up only to slam her back on the ground.]
Vendetta: Then you will die with them!

Heroic Science!
Tori's Strength
Hi, fellow heroes! My name is Lilly and this is… Heroic Science!
If you’ve looked up to the sky recently you might have seen my newest hero. Her name is Tori Just and she has the ability to punch villains… into space!
But what would happen if Tori, who is able to lift 200 quintillion tons with one hand, has the ability to power the sun and, my favorite, can punch dimensions apart,… were to punch you?
In this theory, no matter how strong Tori Just is, there is one universal law of physics that even she can’t break; That nothing with mass can achieve, traveling the speed of light.
So we will put her 1% below that 299.792.458m/s limit at 99% the speed of light; which is still a whopping 296.794.533m/s.
So you are, unfortunately, about to fight Tori Just who - in this case - will not be restraining herself and you are about to feel the full brunt of a Densorin woman.
If her fist has an average mass of 300gr and it’s moving at 99% the speed of light it would have a total energy of about a 190… quadrillion joules. Which is equivalent to 45 megatons of TNT or over 2.800 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
Throwing just one punch at near the speed of light with that much energy would burn around 45 trillion calories, which is equivalent to almost 82 billion Big Macs.
Now you have one of the largest bombs ever condensed into a 300gr fist and aimed at your face at near the speed of light. What happens when she releases that punch?
Well, this is where it gets extremely cool… Or extremely hot since the energy being released by Tori Just’s fist would be around 80 trillion Kelvin (143.999.999.999.543,3°F) which is 5 million times hotter than the core of our sun (which is only 15.7 million Kelvin).
It takes about 1 centisecond (10.000.000 Nanosecond) for the light to hit your retina to then be processed by the brain. So since the punch is traveling at near the speed of light it would only take 3,4 nanoseconds for her fist to reach your jaw. So you literally wouldn’t see it coming!
But what we can see, from the fist’s perspective, since it’s going 296.794.533m/s, is that time is practically frozen. All the particles in the air – The oxygen, the nitrogen – are just suspended in time. Tori’s hand is hitting them with so much energy that it creates nuclear fusion. Gamma rays explode and creates an explosion that the Earth has never seen before.
A giant fireball would engulf the surrounding area and blast wave shoots out, shattering windows, structures and ripping trees out of the ground. There might be other heroes out there with more powerful punches, but at this point, when it comes to you still existing, it doesn’t matter.
Tori wouldn’t just knock the wind out of you, oh no. She would literally knock the atoms out of you. Her fist has pretty much become a particle beam.
At 7 billion electron volts it’s more powerful than the Jefferson Labs particle accelerator in Virginia. The atoms that are made up of you would be completely disintegrated. You’d be liquefied at the atomic level within a mere second.
You’d turn into fundamental particles and quark-gluon plasma, which is what was created right after the big bang and from all this energy, new particles and anti-particles would form. So out of your unfortunate destruction something new, something we might have never even seen before, could be created.
To visualize the explosion we can use nukemap to see what a 45 megaton bomb would look like in terms of sheer damage, but what I can’t show is that the damage from Tori’s punch would look more like a traffic cone with a beam shooting out from where her fist landed destroying everything in its path and creating an explosion all around her. It would leave a crater almost 1km (0,6miles) in diameter and 221m (725ft) deep.
So… Yeah. Don’t piss of Tori and thanks for reading… Heroic Science!
Tori's Celerity
Hey, fellow heroes, Lilly here. Tori Just – You must know her by now - She has the ability to fly at nearly the speed of light, but I ask you to consider the implications of a human that can fly at near light-speed speeds. It is time to explore the science of Tori’s Celerity. But first, a question: How fast can Tori fly, officially?
Well, this brings up an interesting idea; Tori’s – and really any fictional character’s – power is completely determined by whoever is writing them, so basically I can say she flies at the speed of light. But, according to Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, that would mean Tori either has no mass or uses infinite energy.
Both options give me a headache, so, let's stick with the possibilities that don't break physics.
At the very least, Tori can achieve near light-speed velocity, but that’s still a pretty high number. So instead, to make it easier, let’s stick to the speed of sound, which is 768 MPH, or 343 m/s at sea level. This is otherwise known as Mach 1, and each multiple of that speed is Mach 2, Mach 3, and so on.
Some real life references might be helpful; The record for fastest human goes to Usain Bolt, who can run up to 27 MPH (12m/s). The fastest land animal in the real world is the Cheetah, which has a top speed of 75 MPH (34m/s), or about 1/10th of Mach 1. And the fastest animal on the planet is the Peregrine Falcon, which, in a full dive, can reach 200 MPH(89m/s), about 1/4th of Mach 1.
So, it turns out that there's nothing in nature that really comes close to Mach 1. So, what effects might breaking the sound barrier have on Tori? Well, Tori is about the same weight and height of an adolescent woman, so, let's treat her as such.
On October 14th, 2012, Felix Baumgarnter became the first, and still only, human to travel faster than the speed of sound without the aid of a vehicle. You can try this at home by skydiving from a height of 39 KM. Felix reached the speed in an atmosphere that was thinner than what we experience at sea level, meaning that the speed of sound was slower where he was. However, he still achieved Mach 1.24, so, his experience yields useful data. For one, there was no undue stress on him caused by breaking the sound barrier - Felix didn't even notice it.
People don't feel velocity, we feel acceleration, which is a change in velocity. If you're traveling down the highway at a constant speed, you'll feel the same force as you would sitting on a park bench. But, come to a sudden stop, and you'll feel that change in acceleration. Roller Coasters can accelerate people at up to 2 or 3 times Earth's gravity, known as a "G." Military pilots are conditioned to handle combat maneuvers at up to 7G, which would make most people black out.
Attributing to the fact that Tori can move from a rested position to a near light-speed velocity instantly, we can conclude that she can go from 0 to Mach 1 in about 0.04 femtoseconds (rounded up) without fear of losing consciousness. That holds for slowing down, too. And here is where it becomes really interesting; It takes your brain 1 centisecond to process with your seeing, but because Tori moves faster than your eye can see, You literally won’t see her leave. What you will see, in that 1 centisecond, is that she is frozen in time and would gradually redshift until she eventually disappears in front of your eyes.
And, if there's one thing people know about supersonic travel, it's the "sonic boom".
An object creates a series of pressure waves when it moves through the air - much like a boat in water. These waves travel at the speed of sound, and, as the object, itself, breaks the sound barrier, they're compressed into a shockwave cone that travels behind the object.
Plane's often cause sonic booms, but would Tori, herself, cause a sonic boom? A human simply doesn't displace enough air to be a wide-ranging disturbance.
Another question involves Tori talking at Mach 1 and beyond: Would you even be able to hear her? Tori, herself, and any friends traveling at the same supersonic speed next to her, would not be able to hear her at all, since Tori would be moving faster than the sound escaping her mouth. Everyone's ears are situated in front of the sound wave cone.
For stationary observers, anything Tori says would be compressed into that shockwave, and just add more noise to the previously discussed sonic boom. Besides, at Mach 1, she wouldn't be able to say anything intelligible anyway. In the time it takes you to finish this sentence, Tori would have already travelled one mile. Doesn't make for good communication, does it?
Another thing to consider is that high speeds, heating due to air friction, or more specifically; drag, becomes a concern. If you stick your head out a car window going down the highway, you've met drag-force.
Basically, air is dense enough to push back on any object that enters through it at a high speed and that work done can create heat. The question is, is this heat significant enough to effect Tori?
As speed increases, the drag-force that an object needs to overcome is squared. Take an object the size of Tori and this force can reasonably be fully converted into thermal energy. Using that assumption, Tori would heat up at a rate of +37°C/s (+67°F/s).
Now, this is a rough number and doesn't account for factors that would make Tori cooler or warmer, like convective cooling through the atmosphere, or adiabatic heating, respectively.
One could convincingly argue that the heating Tori experiences would only be a fraction of this because of the cooling effect caused by the wind whipping by her face. But, it gives us a good idea of the forces that Tori needs to work against when reaching Mach 1.
The real life effects of such heating can be seen with the SR71 Blackbird. It generated so much heat while flying at Mach 3, that its titanium skin plates were designed with gaps in between them that actually leaked fuel while sitting at rest. But, this design allowed the heated plates to expand during flight and fill the gaps, ensuring supersonic travel wouldn't tear the skin apart.
So, with all that in mind, I have one more question: How much energy would Tori expend to run at the speed of sound? Everyone knows that jogging is a great exercise, so, hey, Mach 1 probably really sheds the pounds.
Well, there are two really relevant forces at work here: The first is the energy Tori uses to move her body - literally fly up and go. After all, your body needs to burn energy to keep it in the air and moving.
That said, we could expect Tori to burn about 2500 calories if she flies at the speed of sound for 2 minutes, but this is in a vacuum state. If we were to apply it to the real world, that darn drag-force means that Tori must expend more energy the faster she goes simply to push back against the air. The power needed to overcome this force is cubed as speed increases. And, since power is the rate at which energy is used, we can find the energy needed in calories, as well.
So, to overcome air drag, Tori needs to burn an extra 210.000 calories every 2 minutes. To put that in perspective, Tori would need to consume 686 hotdogs every time. That's almost 62,000 M&M's, or 386 Big Macs. Hopefully Tori has a good appetite...
With all this in mind there is one more thing I wish to share with you guys; What would Tori see while traveling at near the speed of light? As you reach near lightspeed velocity, at the same time all of the light reaching you would blueshift until you were left with This. The cosmic background radiation blueshifted all-the-way up into the visible range.
Let's hope she doesn't bumb into anything while flying that fast... And thanks for reading… Heroic Science!
