Background and Origin

Wilkins family history

Candice Wilkins was far from the first member of her family to display unique skills and powers. Her great grandfather was one of the first of her family to display powers under the moniker the Crimson Bolt. A speedster that sometimes ended up on the wrong side of the law for standing out against corrupt and sometimes racist individuals in positions of power. His children likewise took up the mantle, at least at first. Candice's grandfather donned the cape as the hero and later anti-hero Basalt. The treatment of his father slowly pushed him towards less noble ends employing his enhanced strength in brutal fashion before finally crossing the line, recklessly causing thousands in property damage and accidentally responsible for the death of a young couple, an act he later surrendered himself to the authorities for. Her great aunt however ended up abusing her powers as the Ebon Flare, Eventually being arrested and tried for numerous counts of arson and armed robbery.

The next in line, her father, took up the mantle of the hero again as Boomer. A heavy set super strength meta, with a twist, he had the unique ability to bolster other powered individuals around him. He eventually married the heroine, Blessed Grace. Her mother, other than possessing flight had the ability to draw pain and injury into herself. Frequently ending up hospitalized due to her willingness to sacrifice her own health to help others. The pair soon after marrying moved to Millennium City after the destruction of old Detroit to lend their talent there in the aftermath. Currently retired they still use those abilities in a civilian capacity, her mother as a nurse at Mercy and father has a small construction company that employs several other powered individuals.

And finally we come to Candice and her siblings, Marcus and Cassidy. Her twin brothers are both heroes in their own right fighting alongside one another as Meteor and Cloudchaser. The former possessing supersonic levels of flight and the ability to cover his skin in a dense stone-like shell, while the other possessing the ability to manipulate wind and to a lesser degree the weather. The twins both left home prior to Candice coming of age and discovering her own abilities, in a rather awkward manner. Her power first manifesting on a first date shortly before her school's homecoming. Her then boyfriend unknown to her had developed powers of his own, and at that first kiss she suddenly burst into a form of blinding light, rendering the boy temporarily blind along with most of the witnesses to it. After that incident it was a good many months before she finally began to learn just what her powers entailed.

Varia, Sidekick for hire

Once she really learned what her powers actually did she quickly realized she couldn't do quite as her parents and siblings. To this end she started reaching out through various outlets under the alias Varia to lend aid to other heroes just starting out like herself. Originally only doing this locally she eventually began to look for others across the country all in the hopes of gaining more experience with the myriad of powers she might wind up with. She clearly understood that she'd need experience to reliably control the varied powers she gained and branching out more would broaden her experience in them and make her even more of an asset. She spent a good bit of time with each hero as she realized the powers were unchanging when gained from the same person to properly learn how to use each.

Unfortunately much to her annoyance the media had started labeling her as a 'sidekick for hire' despite the fact that at times her powers and abilities clearly overshadowed the hero with which she partnered up. Even to the point of almost single handedly dealing with the problems that came their way. At times turning a typical struggle for a hero into a one sided confrontation as their apparent nemesis hadn't anticipated someone helping them let alone with a power they'd not been prepared for. But due to, and even in thanks to, the media most of the time she'd been underestimated because they though she were just a sidekick, and at times a failed one at that going by all the heroes she'd worked with. And as much as she hated the reputation she didn't fight it knowing how well it gave her that element of surprise when villains realized she was much more capable than advertised, and usually much too late.

Randomized power generation - She has the unique ability to temporarily gain a power seemingly at random from direct contact with another powered individual. The power can last anywhere between 30 minutes to 3 hours. And largely unknown to most each power is unique to an individual so she will always have a specific power each time she touches them. She has clearly trained a good deal in controlling a wide variety of powers as she wields them much more effectively than one would expect of someone new to their powers.

Power familiarity- Obviously tied to her actual power she has a lot of familiarity with a vast array of powers giving her something of an edge in tactical usage of most powers. Including identifying weaknesses in those reliant on their powers.

CQC training- She is proficient in unarmed combat, though by no means an expert. She is at least competent enough to hold her own against typical thugs when deprived of any powers.

Certified pilot- Not an ace pilot by any means but she is more than capable of handling most small engine and commercial aircraft.

Varia carries a small knife in each of her boots when required for various uses and her eye patch serves two purposes, the first to hide her natural appearing eye to reduce identifying markers and to give her a simple HUD and multiple visibility tools. Her suit itself is a bit more resistant to a variety of elements as she often finds herself wielding many different powers. The boots, other than holding the small knives are designed to take a lot of punishment as she has at times been capable of both superhuman levels of speed and various other abilities that requires they take a beating.
