Nathan Lopez Garcia is the main protagonist of Lonely God, and is a member of the Canerian Special Forces (CSF) fighting in the war between NATO and the superpower Drasil. After his metahuman ability to see ghosts awakened following the Granian Incident, his powers were discovered by the lead scientist Stephen Grant, leading to his recruitment to the military.

As a member of the CSF under the special unit for those affected by the Granian Incident, Garcia is given the codename Shaman. However, those on the battlefield would refer to Nathan as The Ghost King as Nathan's popularity begins to skyrocket from his heroic deeds on the front lines. Nathan joined the CSF at the same time his best friend Parsa Soroush, joined, Soroush, being given the codename Unstoppable.

Following Drasil's defeat, Parsa defected from the CSF and decided to use his newfound powers of Immortality to take over the world, partaking in mass killings under the extremist pretense of "cleansing the world of racism and discrimination". Pointing out that Nathan himself, being of Mexican heritage, also suffered racial discrimination, Parsa offered Nathan to be his partner in bringing a new world, but Nathan rejected Parsa's extremism, insisting that there was a better way to end the discrimination without any more senseless violence. Siding with Caneria and NATO, Nathan and Parsa have now become sworn enemies.

Background

Nathan was born to Reya Lopez Garcia in the province Toran, Caneria. It was said that Nathan's father had abandoned the two before he was born, leading to Reya raising her son alone. Living a life of poverty, Reya rented an old apartment in a building complex with the lowest rate. The apartment was severely haunted by numerous evil spirits, however, Reya and Nathan's financial situation could not afford the two to live anywhere else. Due to the situation, Nathan grew up living with frequent paranormal activity.

Nathan and Parsa becoming Blood Brothers

Nathan attended Saint Stephen Grant High School, and quickly became best friends with Parsa Soroush after Nathan defended the boy from bullies - by creating a makeshift pepper spray launcher and fending the bullies off. Curious of Nathan's brash personality, Parsa asked Nathan where he got his bravery from, and Nathan responded that he didn't know, but admitted that seeing people being bullied by those with power made him feel nauseous and he didn't like the feeling. Parsa replied that he could never stand up to his bullies as doing so would cause his parents even more societal backlash, as the threat of Drasil potentially invading Caneria was largely due in part to the large influx of Iranian refugees - the main slave force of Drasil who abandoned the country to seek shelter in Caneria. Parsa revealed that due to his family situation, he took on the self-sacrificial role of being weak and passive - and that the situation had caused many to avoid Parsa out of potential affiliation with his parents. Parsa then attempted to urge Nathan to leave him alone, but Nathan rebuked Parsa's claims, vowing to be his protector. Nathan then took out a switchblade and cut his thumb, pressing it against one of Parsa's open wounds which had been afflicted to him by the bullies - swearing to be his sworn blood brother. Emotionally touched by Nathan's kindness, Parsa accepts Nathan's offer, and the two become close friends.

After word got out of both Nathan's affiliation with Parsa, as well as his ethnicity, the two boys quickly became targets by the popular clique due to Parsa's Middle Eastern background, and Nathan's Mexican background, the two being given the acronym FFTB, which stood for Freaks from the Border, a highly derogatory term aimed at the two's nationalities infamous reputation of illegally entering Caneria through its border.

Despite the frequent bullying due to his race, Nathan would spend his days with Parsa, dreaming of one day becoming a pilot and joining the Canerian Armed Forces (CAF) in their campaign in the war against Drasil.

Meeting Guillaume Dubois

One day, while Nathan and Parsa were having lunch, one of the bullies began harassing another immigrant to Caneria, Guillaume Dubois, a refugee who had escaped from France after the country was overrun by Drasil's military forces. Nathan attempted to stand up for Guillaume but was shut down by one of the school bullies, Julia Walters. As Walters continued berating Nathan in front of the entire lunchroom, Parsa began succumbing to a psychological battle, of whether or not to stand up to Julia and risk his parents suffering backlash, or allowing one of his only close friends to be harassed by the said bully. As Nathan could not bring it in himself to hurt a girl, no matter how vile her personality was, Julia continued attacking Nathan until she forced Nathan's hand to touch her chest. Walters then took a picture of what appeared to be Nathan groping her and threatened to use this information to label Garcia as a sexual offender. Realizing both Nathan and his single mother would be in heavy controversy if Julia released the image on social media, Parsa came to Nathan's aid, by threatening to expose Julia for committing academic fraud and releasing evidence of her getting her friends to write her exams for her to the school board. Enraged by Parsa's sudden act of courage, Julia called her boyfriend, Luke Chase to ambush Parsa while Nathan was in class, by having Parsa locked in a washroom urinal and his head smashed against the porcelain, splitting his lip and giving him a severe infection. The assaults became more frequent until Parsa feared coming to school, as the appearance of his lip began causing him to gain the nickname Loose Lip Alien.

Nathan attempted to cheer Parsa up but was unsuccessful, as Parsa claimed that it was easy for Nathan to play the supporting role when he wasn't targeted as severely as he was. Before Nathan could try anything else, Guillaume approached the boys and personally thanked Parsa for standing up to Julia, apologizing for causing Parsa to end up like this. Upon Guillaume asking the boys why Walters was able to get away with such heinous acts, Parsa revealed that the board treated those of foreign descent differently than native Canerians, and that the only time any severe punishment had ever been inflicted would have been through academic dishonesty. Even assault would be waived as long as the victim was not a native Canerian. Angered that his parents had brought him to a country full of hate for his race, Guillaume started expressing his frustrations about his parents to Nathan and Parsa. As Guillaume continued complaining, Nathan retaliated angrily by pointing out how ungrateful the boy was, as even racism had to be better than being in a warzone. Nathan then began retelling Guillaume's story but from the perspective of his parents - causing Guillaume to realize the folly in his words. Deeply sorry for the things he said about his parents, Guillaume thanks Nathan for putting things into perspective and vows to cherish the gift his parents had given him - a life away from the war. Following this, Guillaume then joined Nathan and Parsa's friend group.

Forming the FFTB Squad

During lunch break, Nathan proposed a game called Wadball to Parsa and Guillaume; whoever could manage to throw a wad of paper into the waste bin basket at a distance 30 yards away would have the group buy him lunch. Parsa and Nathan went first but were both unsuccessful, with Nathan having the worst accuracy of the two, causing Parsa and Guillaume to laugh at him. Annoyed, Nathan told Guillaume to try, and to his shock, Guillaume managed to get the paper into the bin on his first try. In disbelief, Nathan got Guillaume to try again, believing it was a fluke. Guillaume proceeded to perfectly land the paper into the basket multiple times until a frustrated Nathan got Guillaume to throw the paper into the waste bin at a distance of 50 yards, 60 yards, and 80 yards. Guillaume then explained that in France, he was forced to become a rifleman for the French Army, where he was expected to train in the rifle from the age of seven. At sixteen, he would be drafted into the army. One week before his sixteenth birthday, Guillaume's parents managed to catch the train out of the country, narrowly avoiding Guillaume's conscription. Guillaume then admitted that he hated using the rifle, or anything that reminded him of marksmanship. However, Guillaume revealed that despite his past, for some reason, playing Wadball with Nathan and Parsa somehow made him feel different, and that it was fun, rather than traumatic. Happy at his words, Nathan and Parsa proceeded to buy Guillaume lunch, surprising Guillaume.
