Chapter 98 (Remnant 5)

"How did you know who I was? Like instantly?" I asked.

Meena leaned against a pillar, smoking a cigarette. Her eye was half open, dead, and expressionless. Kind of like what you would see from a nihilist.

"I've been following you. Tracking your progress. It didn't take much to see you were a Remnant." She replied.

I got up. "But like... how? Is it because of my powers?"

Meena looked at me, her expression was laced in pain. "No... your face. It was your face."

I chucked. "Well, I do have an interesting face. One of a kind."

Meena shook her head. "You have no idea."

"So... I mean. If you wanna help me get stronger, what did you have in mind?"

Meena breathed out a line of smoke.

"Heads up." She said, as she flicked the cigarette at my face. I instinctively put my hands up, and a massive telekinetic surge blasted the pavement in front of me, creating a chasm.

"What in the hell?!" I shouted.

Meena had already weaved out of the way.

"You can't control your powers. They're all based on impulse. If anything, we should start with your basics."

That night, Meena showed me how to properly cool myself down.

"In a fight, you never lose your center. Always focus on the opponents. If you lose focus, it's over."

"Okay." I said, as I flicked my finger, blasted away a soda can.

"A good fighter isn't about how much destruction they can do. I've killed tons of contracts where they simply tried to overpower me just because I had two guns."

I flicked my finger, and took down another can.

"It's all about precision and focus as well. Just as important. Try again."

I looked at her. "But... I already knocked them all off."

Meena walked up to the cans and put them back on the trunk. "Try again."

I sighed and aimed my finger, summoning another blast of redirected air. Just as I was about to flick my finger, Meena undid her ponytail, letting her hair tumble to her shoulders. My heart skipped a beat, and I accidentally flicked my finger, causing a jolt of force to annihilate a nearby tree.

"Shit!" I muttered.

Meena walked up to me and kicked me in the groin, as I fell to the ground, groaning.

"What did I just tell you?"

"Precision... and focus..." I groaned. "I can't continue. My groin. I think you just destroyed all chances of me having kids."

Meena scowled. "If you can't handle that, you shouldn't call yourself a hero." She said.

I sat down. That hurt.

Meena noticed my expression and her face softened. "I..."

She sighed and sat next to me. "We'll continue next time."

I watched the stars. "Meena."

I turned to her. Despite her dead expression, I could tell she was hiding a ton of freaking hurt. Pain. Emotional pain. Damn empath powers.

"This man that you loved... do I know him?"

Meena didn't answer. "It's complicated. You just remind me of him so much."

I smirked. "Damn. I thought I was special too." Meena lit up another cigarette.

"That shit is gonna give you cancer one day." I noted.

Meena paused, and put it out, throwing it into the trashcan with killer aim.

My eyes went wide. "Well I mean. You could still smoke. I'm not forcing you to-"

"Stop. Thomas." She closed her eyes. "Just stop."

More waves of sadness came from her. Damn.

"I uh. Sorry. If I struck a nerve. Don't worry. I'll keep practicing what you told me."

I stood up and gave her a thumbs up. "I'm going to be the best hero in this city!"

Meena tilted her head, and leaned back. "Hmph."

I turned to the skies. "Still have no idea why you're helping me though. This just seems so sudden. I mean normally I don't go about revealing my identity and stuff."

Meena stood up. "Like I said before. You remind me a lot of the man I loved. Acting on my feelings is definitely against my own code. But..."

Meena stared at a nearby dress shop. She began emanating more sorrow. I hoped she wasn't considering those discounted dresses.

"No matter how much I try to run from him. I can never escape him. Not from my thoughts. Not from the people I meet."

Meena put her hand on blindfold, taking it off. Revealing a golden eye underneath.

"Not even from my own desires."
