Background and Origin
History
Her story asserts that while aboard an English trading vessel "First Impression" (formerly "Gracia de la Espada") which was involved in a conflict with the French vessel by the name of "Le Superbe" near Havana, Cuba, the aftcastle was torn from the ship with her on it. Melanie had emerged to find herself still on deck, but with a sizable portion of the galleon on land without any sensation of impact.
Melanie states she had discovered herself in Nottely Lake, Georgia. The galleon itself has since been located, but in several large chunks spread between Florida and Michigan. By the condition of the planks and masts, the materials were between 40-46 years old and comprised of plants known to grow natively in Spain.
Moving to Millenium City
Melanie spent the following few weeks following the trail of her former ship and home, sifting through the remains for her posessions. She had discovered in this time that the path of destruction was extremely straight and allowed plotting the specific line it followed which lead to Millenium City. The final location contained a moderate amount of ship debris, but mostly as fine particles along with the structure that was once standing at that location.
Having recovered the majority of her posessions from the First Impression, (which was never disclosed), she decided to take residence in the city as it was "as good as any, and close enough."
In spite of not securing any regular employment, Melanie appears to live quite comfortably.

Her manner of speech is initially difficult to understand. Her dress is appropriate for the early 1700s which makes her stand out.
