Mei Li is a Chinese American from San Francisco, who has moved to Old Detroit and Millennium City for the most prosaic of jobs – this is where the work is. Having managed honors in the Applied Thaumaturgy program at UC Berkeley (Studying under Prof. Isaac Bonewitts) she got a job thru the student employment office as a junior researcher on campus. However, the job fell through following the loss of the grant the senior researcher was pursuing when he disappeared, and so she moved to Millennium City. Here she hoped to find a job as a consultant having heard via academic contacts there was a lot of mystic activity in the area. Unfortunately this proved to be fruitless and she wound up working as a part time manager of a small occult bookstore and supply catering to mystics in the area. However, with the recent attacks by Dr Destroyer and the destruction of the bookstore she was working in, she found herself laid off.

Laid off, in Millennium city, and with a staggering load of student loan debt ( 62, 000 dollars, no less) and rapidly running out of deferment time, what’s a girl to do?

So, she took up freelance hero work, aiding a hero there, doing a research job there, and periodically taking on short hero work for the city. The stipends are modest (apparently, as far as she can see, because nobody really thinks a real hero has to pay rent) and things are tight, leaving Mei Li a hero living on raman noodles, cheap Chinese food (which she hates) and getting around on her Honda Ruckus motor scooter when she feels the need to venture beyond reach of the bus lines.
