Background and Origin
Dr. Umbridge and the Tar Cloak
Jenine Umbridge, Ph.D., was a professor of anthropology at Millennium City University. Although she taught the occasional undergraduate introductory courses, her main focus was on continued research and archaeological expeditions. She led many such excursions during the summer semesters with teams of graduate students as her assistants.
During one such excursion into the hills of Ireland, Umbridge was called over to check something that one of her students had found: a mysterious hole in the side of a hill that seemed to lead further down. Sensing that this find was significant, she grabbed a flashlight and went down first. When she deemed it safe, she called out for more of her team to follow.
One student remained behind to watch the camp. She would be the only survivor, and the only one to relay this story to the authorities. Umbridge emerged, alone, from the hole: her right hand was dripping with an inky black substance of unknown origin; her left, with blood; her eyes, with madness. The surviving student fled and notified the local authorities before taking refuge. She was nor pursued, nor did any sighting of Umbridge occur for months. Before her debut as shadow-wielding sorceress "Doctor Umbra," she was only sighted once more by a campus security guard, raiding the MCU anthropology department's storage room. The guard was mysteriously put to sleep before he could arrest her. The next day, the only thing missing was an ancient tome that both linguistic scholars and consulting Trismegistus Council wizards had failed to translate.
