Background
Fatal Encounter.
Trent Robertson is a nonchalant but witty 19 year-old who was born powerless into a middle-class family in the southern state of Florida. He and his family lived in the city of Gainesville which fortunately for them, did not see much of any danger as the villians and heroes were usually doing their thing in Vibora Bay which is about 4 and a half hours away from his hometown. Growing up, Trent always had a fascination of Atlantis and it's people. He would do research and stay up to date on any developments between the U.S. and Atlantis. Trent outwardly expressed his feelings about the Atlanteans even though some criticized and scorned him which was mostly due to the xenophobia surrounding the aquatic race. On the summer prior to his junior year of high-school at the age of 16, Trent and his parents went to a poltical event held by the Prince and ambassador of Atlantis, Marus. The purpose of this event was to promote a feeling of benevolence between the American and Atlantean people, of which both Trent and parents stood strongly for. After the event was finished, Prince Marus stayed to personally talk to a few supporters of the cause. Luckily, Trent was able to secure a spot. While waiting, a masked and hooded figure slowly approached. Trent caught eye of the figure as he continued on and spotted him drawing a gun of some sort from his coat but by then it was too late. The figure quickly opened fire aiming for Prince Marus and his fellow Atlanteans. Everyone in the surrounding area started to flee in a panic fearing for their lives. Prince Marus had taken cover and through the commotion, the shooter had put his sights on an Atlantean women who had been accompanying the prince. As the shooter took aim, Trent rushed to the woman in hopes of moving her out the way. Trent had succeeded but was struck twice leaving him in critical condition. Armed guards quickly arrived on the scene forcing the shooter to surrender. The Atlantean woman called for the Prince's help as she was trying to keep Trent alive by putting pressure on his wounds. Prince Marus was made aware of the situation and in act of desperation with time running out, the prince pleaded to Trent's parents to take him to Atlantis to be healed. His parents accepted as they saw no other option and found a strange feeling of trust between the prince.
Atlantis
Using minor Atlantean magic, Prince Marus was able to keep Trent alive while transporting him back to Atlantis. Once they reached the underwater city, the prince ordered a few Atlantean priests to immediately prepare for a ritual of old magic once used by Poseidon himself, to grant the Atlanteans the ability to live underwater. Prince Marus hoped that the spell would successfully grant Trent Atlantean physiology, which would allow him to heal from his injuries. After a few minutes of quick preparation, the ritual was ready to be performed. Trent was placed inside the temple of Poseidon and the priests began. After about an hour, the ritual was finished. The priests successfully imbued Trent with the magic of old granting him Atlantean physiology along with some other (at the time unknown) abilities that would be considered rare among the Atlantean people. After a few hours of recovery, Trent awoke. Prince Marus had been waiting to properly introduce himself and personally give his gratitude for saving a fellow Atlantean. To say Trent was in disbelief would be an understatement. Waking up in the city of Atlantis, let alone with Atlantean blood was something Trent only dreamed of. Prince Marus explained to Trent what had happened and told him of the ritual that had taken place. Seeing that Trent was obviously an ally and willing to put his life on the line for a random stranger, Prince Marus offered a Trent a place among the Atlantean people to which Trent graciously accepted. From that point onward Trent would lead a life that tied both into the world above land and the world below. Trent spent the most of 3 years in Atlantis, earning an education that was equivalent to his remaining years of high school. At the same time Trent decided to train and learn to fight, enabling him to become a hero. Over the years, Trent developed a two abilities that were considered rare among Atlanteans. One ability was hydrokinesis which Trent discovered during at home in Florida when he accidentally flooded his room when he raged over a videogame. Trent discovered his aquatic telepathy while in Atlantis when he felt the pain of an injured whale a few miles outside of Atlantis. Trent discovered his third ability of super strength early on when he ripped the door of its hinges at his home in Atlantis. Trent found life in Atlantis enjoyable. Although many Atlanteans were skeptical about brining in a lander, Trent proved to be loyal ally as he would often help around Atlantis and above land with public relations. 2 years after his transformation and rigorous martial training, Trent would become a hero under the name Mariner.
Powers, Weaknesses
Powers
Hydrokinesis - One of his rare powers, Trent can control great volumes of water to a very high degree. He can dry himself and items underwater as long as he holds onto it, extract water, create oxygen bubbles underwater for people who cannot breathe underwater, and summon waves that can easily sink ships. Trent has only mastered the ability to manipulate water and cannot create it on his own without intense concentration. He can use this ability to harden water into an almost solid shape by increasing the surface tension of the water.
Aquatic Telepathy - Trent possesses the ability to telepathically feel the emotions of most aquatic creatures. This power does not allow him to actually communicate with sea creatures only feel different emotions between them.
Atlantean Physiology- Trent possesses enhanced levels of speed, strength, agility, reflexes, durability and stamina. Trent can run, lift, and is more agile than someone at peak human capacity. His strength even rivals that of Prince Marus who is said to be on of the strongest Atlanteans. His strength does start to diminish slowly if he is out of contact with water for extended periods of time. Trent's Atlantean physiology allows him to swim at speeds around 300 mph and the ability to see at deep ocean depths. The tissues of Trent's body are much harder and more resistant to physical injury than those of normal human beings and most other Atlanteans. Trent can withstand tremendous impact forces, falls from great heights, small firearms, exposure to temperature and pressure extremes, blows from powerful superhumans, and powerful energy blasts without sustaining fatal injury. If injured, Trent's body can heal damaged tissue faster and much more extensively than a human or most Atlanteans. Trent's accelerated healing is at its peak while he is immersed in water, but does diminish the longer he is out of contact with water or if he is dehydrated. Trent has also developed enhanced hearing to clearly hear through water.
Weaknesses
Water Dependency - When not exposed to water, many of Trent's physical attributes gradually decline and can reach a point where he possesses only a small fraction of his powers. Trent's strength, stamina, and durability are affected most and, at their minimum known level, are much closer to the levels possessed by the vast majority of other Atlanteans. Renewed exposure to water will immediately restore his abilities and he does not need to be fully submerged to be restored
Dehydration - Very powerful heat-based attacks can be a serious problem for Trent, as they cause dehydration, causing his body to dry faster, and weaken at an accelerated rate. Trent also dehydrates at a faster rate than humans.
General Perception
Mariner is seen as a hero and ally to the people above land and the people of Atlantis. He has made waves for stopping crime and rescuing civilians all across the state of Michigan as well as some other eastern coast states. As he balances heroing and his life in on land he tries to create a link between the two worlds.
