Biography

He was born Malachy Francis MacMillan in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland to a Roman Catholic lower Middle-Class family. His father, Gerry MacMillan was in the Garda while his mother, Breda MacMillan (née O’Connor) worked for charity.

During his youth he was regarded as a lively and mischievous little boy. He was always playing pranks, his favourite of which was to knock on people’s doors and then run away. His parents did their best to encourage the ethics of dedication and selflessness in him, though from a religious angle, which was not to the young man’s taste. At school he had been noted for having great athletic ability and a high aptitude with Physics.

He became a Pilot in the RAF before moving on to fly cargo for an American firm based in Millennium City. He was helped settle into this new city by taking up with his Uncle’s family a short while, where he met his little cousin Dylan for the first time.

While flying a small deposit of the alien substance Kelvarite to San Francisco, his plane came under attack and was shot down by two unidentified hostiles over the Nevada Desert. There was an explosion of red flame, black smoke and green mist. Out of the wreckage stepped Malachy, glowing like a bright emerald before the light dissipated. His world stopped still, and his life was changed forever. The Kelvarite had fused with his genetic structure, allowing him to move, think and react to danger at superhuman speed.

Upon his return to Millennium City, he witnessed an armed robbery while trying to get home. Using his new found power, he chased the getaway vehicle through the streets and apprehended the criminals. Having gained a new perspective and appreciation of his parents’ dedication to helping others, he donned a costume and took on the alter-ego of Mach 3.

A few weeks into his new double-life, he encountered a number of people attempting theft but who all bore strange microchips attached to their heads. With the chips removal, they would then claim to have no memory of what they had been doing or why. Chasing the trail of these devices led him to a derelict warehouse where inside he found the man responsible for their creation and control, the brilliant Belgian neuroscientist named Byron van den Berg. During the confrontation, Byron revealed that he had been committing these crimes in order to pay a ransom on his wife. The pair then agreed that Byron would make the exchange and once his wife was safe, Malachy would apprehend the kidnappers. Upon receipt of the money however, the kidnappers produced only her cold lifeless body. Though he subdued the men, Malachy could not console the weeping Byron; who cursed the Earth and all upon it.

Mere days later, mass-fighting broke out among the denizens of a neighbourhood in the Westside district. Mach 3 arrived on the scene within seconds and raced through the streets attempting to restore order. As he pulled the people away from one another, he discovered the cause of the chaos; Byron’s microchips. Standing there atop a tenement building, a man dressed in a bright blue costume bellowed with laughter. Mach 3 rushed up to face the man, who seemed to be controlling the residents with a hi-tech helmet, and who proclaimed himself as Mind Man. In the ensuing tussle, the helmet was broken and the people suddenly stopped their fighting. The man in the costume was not Byron but was under his mental control. He used this host to warn the hero that this event was only a test and that worse was to still to come.

This saga left Malachy disheartened with his new super-hero life and he considered putting it to an end. However, when the alien species known as the Qularr launched an invasion upon his adopted city, he found his resolve and leapt to its defence. During the battle, he discovered his cousin Dylan fighting under the alias Morrigan, having had his latent mutant genes recently awaken. Though he initially tried to discourage the young boy, Malachy decided it best to offer his guidance and assistance.

After the Qularr invasion he had a brief stint as a member of the WSAI under its reputed leader Commander US. Under the hero’s tutorledge, he became a much more adept combatant and he learned how to fight in a team unit. During this time he battled twin crime duo Voltage & Vectress and hot-headed martial artist Salamander, enhancing his reputation with their arrests. Soon after, the Commander went underground and Mach 3 returned to crime-fighting solo.
