Origins
The story of Lady Justice is tale worthy of any Greek tragedy. Born as Allison Gray, the future crimefighter spent the first fifteen years of her life as any other ordinary girl. Allison showed aptitude for mathematics and problem-solving and from an early age had a huge interest in robotics and engineering. These dreams were derailed when Allison was afflicted with vision loss that suddenly progressed into full-blown blindness in a little over a week's time.
As Allison was examined for treatment the addition of hearing loss to her already terrifying situation baffled even the brightest and most experienced of medical professionals. Mortified, Allison's condition only seemed to get worse over the coming weeks. The young woman began to lose her other sensory faculties rapidly, each one ripping her from the world and casting her into a state that was essentially living death. As her parents were awash in grief, confusion, and anger Allison eventually stopped her frantic cries for help and slipped into a catatonic state that would last for roughly one full year. The girl that would later become an avatar of justice still doesn't know how she escaped madness.
The day that Allison Gray re-awoke was almost as horrifying as the day she began to slip away. When her sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch slowly began to reactivate Allison became suddenly aware that she wasn't the way she used to be. Her eyes were seeing sound itself, radio waves, even the signals from WiFi. Her ears were hearing things that were simply impossible for others to comprehend. A merest touch could tell her things about objects far away. Allison, like any person, panicked. The flood of new and confusing information was almost too much for her. She hid her newly found abilities as soon as her situation dawned on her, fearful that if she were known to be different then she would be separated from her family, studied, or perhaps even worse. Allison's family and her medical caretakers believed she was a miracle to survive the condition with what they believed to be only partial blindness. In truth she had become a sensory powerhouse capable of everything from echo-location to vision into the electromagnetic spectrum. Everything from magic to radiation became visible to her, a fate that for nearly a decade would haunt her.
The Awakening
Struggling to live with her abilities Allison made out as best she could. She wore glasses and contacts to feign her blindness, stuffed her ears to deal with the sounds, even going so far as to cover her skin to dull her new senses of touch. She became aware not long after her own ordeal that her sister Susan Gray had become afflicted with the same condition as well. Allison was loathe to involve herself however, something that come back to haunt her later. Not wanting to relive her own trauma through her sister's similar condition, Allison tried to resume a normal life.
She became reclusive, forcing herself to school, eventually college without ever socializing. Being around people always flooded her senses with a literally nauseating amount of information. Her years were nothing but pain. As Allison's senses refined, she began to hear people at great distances, and with that, all of the pain and suffering in the world was placed at her fingertips. Allison could hear a crime miles away, feel it as if it was happening to her, and do nothing about it. Verbal and physical abuse of others reached her along with the accompanying prayers for salvation. Lies became impossible not to hear to her. Weeping filled her mind at all hours of the day to point that she considered suicide. Allison found her only relief in her studies. She poured her soul into studying, eventually graduating with dual degrees in Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. The cold, quiet world of machines was comforting to her.
Allison began work on a master's degree in engineering, specializing in robotic and micro-scale applications. She interned at a small but influential consulting group known as Veritas, where a whole world of patents, blueprints, and hi-tech innovations opened up before her. Allison's prototype project for a micro-machine mesh that could assist crippled individuals with movement was well received by the firm. The same tech would later go on to form the gear Lady Justice uses in battle.
Living in a small apartment near her work in the city, Allison was bombarded with the cries of the weak and defenseless daily. One particular case, a man who beat his girlfriend near daily, had been haunting her for months. As she tried to soothe her own ever-growing powers the man's ritual of torture began anew as it did almost every night, but something in Allison could bear it no longer. She heard the woman's whispered prayers for help and sprang into action. For the first time a rage grew within her, a seething disdain for the kind of sickness that assaulted her senses every single day. She felt herself rise from her table, propelled as if by some unseen force and walk to the door. She hastily tore a strip of cotton sheet to dull her powerful vision and fixed it over her eyes before bolting out her door.
The young woman pounded on her neighbor's door until the man opened. Allison had always been tall for a woman, nearly six feet in height, but the man in front of her easily dwarfed her. Allison's assault surprised the man. Knowing nothing of fighting she struck at the man, managing to hit him in the throat. His wind gone Allison jumped him, hitting and screaming like a wild animal. When the police arrived neither the man or his girlfriend accused the reclusive blind woman in the apartment at the end of the hall. The man was brought to justice, and something in the many years of pain felt right. In the dead of night Allison heard the woman thank her in quiet prayers, thanks for a salvation. Allison suddenly knew her real calling, to answer the prayers of the weak and helpless and strike terror in the hearts of the wicked as an avatar of justice.
Lady Justice is Born
Allison began her foray into a career of crimefighting strategically. Always the genius Allison studied the successes and failures of other prominent heroes. She knew she'd need to learn to fight and that she'd need a uniform that could offer her protection. She knew she'd need a way of responding quickly to incidents in the city and above all she knew she'd need intelligence on the criminal element. The would-be avenger asked if she could work remotely, allowing her to be free at all times of day to fight crime. Allison began work on the beginnings of the Variable Combat Nanosuit, a modified full-body version of the tech she had developed to assist crippled people. The armor, built from tiny nano-machines, could be deployed in an instant and offered her increased strength, speed, and protection from projectile weaponry. She found that she could study martial arts without attending classes and thus raising suspicions by using her enhanced hearing and touch to both learn and fight without ever being in the room. Her days were consumed in creating Lady Justice. She eavesdropped on local gangs and criminals day and night, taking breaks only to study the works of great generals and warriors, detectives and professors, heroes and villains alike.
Allison's initial attacks were swift and brutal. After two years of training and testing she descended upon the city clad in white, blindfolded, caped, ready to exact vengeance. Though she endured frequent setbacks, Lady Justice proved tireless and absorbed in her quest. She developed perhaps her greatest weapon, a brilliant strategic mind that allowed her to analyze and exploit her enemies before her savage attacks ever laid waste to them. Lady Justice soon began taking on crime at all levels, even going so far as to storm boardrooms when the corporations of the city began oppressing their workers. Lady Justice leaves only broken bones and mystery in her wake as the police have found it hard to get a grip on her considering she so easily can hear their clumsy and loud approach. Lady Justice became more than just an alter-ego, but rather what Allison slowly began to realize as her true self. She now sees her the mild-mannered engineer as just an act that she puts on to facilitate her true self.
Over the years she improved her skills and arsenal. Her nanosuit now has several variations that can be activated in a moment's notice, including a darker stealth variant and an up-armored version that designed to assist her in fighting powerful metahuman adversaries. Justice is always testing new gadgets, equipment and armor variations.
Nemesis
Lady Justice's successes were soon humbled by apparent death of her sister Susan. Unlike Lady Justice Susan Gray had never made any attempt to hide her condition from her parents or the doctors. Given their misunderstanding Justice's sister fell into madness as she desperately tried to convince others that was she was seeing was real and not a figment of her own mind. She was committed to a mental institution while Allison Gray did her best with her own problems. When Susan, little more than a husk of a human being, glimpsed Lady Justice helping the innocent it was the final straw for her. Susan set a fire at the institution, causing several death and leading to her escape. She began a life of villainous insanity, believing the world was full of sick and detestable people. She toyed with Justice, taking hostages for fun, planting explosives just to watch her rush around trying to find them. Lady Justice failed several times in her battles with her own sister, and to this day blames herself for allowing her to slip into madness. After their last bout Justice has lost track of her sister, but somewhere knows that one day she will probably return with blood and mayhem in her wake.
The Adventurers
After four years of fighting alone, accepting no help nor seeking it Lady Justice decided albeit reluctantly that she needed others in her life. She had tried to deal with her condition alone and it had led to the villainy of her sister and wasted years in pain and agony. She had started crimefighting alone, and each year her battles with criminals left her more savage. She had become a whisper in the ear of every superstitious criminal, one of fear and awe, but in the end she was alone, friendless, and had even begun doubting the righteous heroes within the city.
Lady Justice resolved to look for new allies, and after careful searching found members of The Adventurers that frequented Club Caprice. Disguised as Allison Gray, Lady Justice evaluated Blue Wonder and Red Spider, eventually going so far as to reveal herself to them and tell them her story. Lady Justice is new to trusting anyone, but seems to be making progress.
