A World Filled with Danger
Born on the distant jungle world of Valkyra, Kara of the clan Lionheart grew up on a world where the threat of being devoured was as constant as the sun rising each morning. Home to gigantic Frost Drakes, cunning Night Prowlers, and ravenous Gorzaks there is no mistaking Kara's world for a friendly place. Kara spent her childhood learning how to fight and defend the walls of the only city to exist on Valkyra's southern continent. Though short for a Valkyran, Kara earned the respect of her fellow warriors by being as her name suggests, a "Brave Spirit".
Kara's people possess little in the way of advanced technology due to being constantly pressured by the attacks of native wildlife, however her people are what one might call socially advanced. Valkyran families are large, and individuals can assimilate other into their family through simple recognition. A Valkyran might have three birthbrothers, and ten regular brothers, or trusted individuals who are considered as family. In this manner, Valkyrans are never lacking for parents, as anyone who fulfills the duties of a parent is considered one to the child. Valkyrans do not discriminate on appearance, gender, belief, or sexual orientation and marriage in their community does not exclude amorous relationships with others. Valkyrans form intense bonds with others and truly believe all to be equal before their deities. Kara grew up exemplifying these traits and by the time of her adulthood was ready to create positive change on her world.
On Kara's world, leadership is conducted in the form of a council of seasoned warriors who have passed an arduous pilgrimage. The goal of this test is show the community that one is ready to put their own life on the line to be worthy of leading others, for on Valkyra none may command those to die who is not willing to do the same. In order to achieve this status one must venture into a deadly environment and survive for a full year. On a particular day in the summer season Kara heard tales of Earth through the only space traders foolhardy to actually visit Valkyra. They told her stories of people with the power of gods doing battle for truth and righteousness. The idea thrilled Kara, who desperately wanted to claim the mantle of leadership on her world so that she might lead her people against the creatures that had so long devoured her kin. Kara bartered passage, and would set sail into the stars at the end of the week.
Champion of Zora
Three days from that point Kara ranged the forest, but became separated from her comrades in the thick jungles of the Dread Forests. It was there that Kara met a stranger, robed, clad in armor, with hair like the glittering sun. The strange Valkyran challenged Kara to a friendly duel, but little did Kara knew she did battle with a deity. Zora, chief among the gods and goddesses, whose territories are courage, righteous fury, and the warrior arts engaged Kara. They fought with gleaming steel amid the trees and though Kara had the opportunity for a killing blow this was not the way of her people. Kara hesitated at the last moment to protect the goddess, and in that moment her opponent ran her through. Kara slumped to the ground, bewildered at why a fellow of her kind would do this. Though Kara thought it to be her last moment, it turned out not to be true. When she awoke Kara found out that there was no wound, and that she was hovering fifty feet in the air. Soon she discovered she could fly, and that she was not quite as vulnerable as she was before. Kara had been granted strength beyond measure, the ability to soar into the heavens, and to repel the most grievous of attacks.
Though many were skeptical of her powers, with many attributing them to sorcery, Kara's family supported her bid for the council and her claims that it must have been the legendary goddess Zora who bestowed them upon her. While it is not uncommon for one to be gifted with magical ability on her world the gift is thought of as a curse. All Valkyrans who are born with magic, without fault, will sooner or later be driven to insanity by it. Kara's ability far outstripped any sorcerer, and showing no signs of insanity Kara's claims were bolstered.
With her newly discovered abilities Kara embarked on a journey for Earth, intent on joining the ranks of the heroes and earning the respect required to lead her people to freedom.
Earth
While the traders who carried her to Earth were willing to get her there, and even sell her a translator that would allow her to speak English, they weren't willing to stay and tutor her in the ways of humanity. Upon her arrival Kara found herself stumbling in Millennium City, initially even mistaking a city bus for a predator that needed to be smashed. Kara's armored appearance often intimidated others and her people's tendency of kissing as a greeting didn't go over too well with the natives.
Kara staked out an abandoned cave as her home and began trying to understand how things work. Over time Kara even gained a few friends by haunting Caprice, who were more willing to tutor her in the ways of things. Many aspects of her Earth's culture, like money for instance, were simply non-existent on her world. The prejudice, villainy, and social judgment of others also chafed against many of her ideals. Despite this, Kara found human culture to be the antithesis of her own peoples'. While Valkyrans had become socially advanced they were afraid to dream and try new things, and while humanity had dreamed their way into great technology they had tramped on their own people to get there. Kara began seeking out worthy adversaries to test herself against, yet soon decided in venturing down the heroic route. Kara's accepting and joyful attitude quickly won her more friends and allies as she sought to oppose villainy wherever it appeared.
When she wasn't patrolling Millennium City Kara found time to explore the world, quite literally. With her flight speed being in excess of the speed of sound she traveled the globe, taking in everything she could, even going so far as to plunge into the ocean depths to see the "great leviathans beneath the waves". Kara discovered in her many adventures that soda gets her drunk, Earth jeans are ridiculous, and that she enjoys many local customs like shopping, sight-seeing, and even cosplaying. She began learning to read English script and train to combat the mind-altering effects magic has on the Valkyran mind.
The Darkheart
A few months into her stay on Earth Kara began receiving strange dreams, which she took to be signs from Zora of approaching danger. Kara soon learned through a violent encounter that another Valkyran had landed on Earth, with intent towards her life seemingly. Kara frequently engaged in battle with the veiled opponent, who wielded strange and fantastic abilities to rival even the greatest sorcerers. The mysterious assailant was clad in the armor of her people yet could streak lightning from her very fingertips and hurl whips of fire. She could summon the very winds in her defense and wielded a sword so malevolent one could feel its hunger for blood from a simple look upon it.
Kara would eventually learn that her foe was none other than her older sister, Vara. Vara had taken Kara's appointment as Champion of Zora quite poorly, though she hid it well. She had gone into the Heart of Darkness, a place so devoid of light within the Dread Forests that even the beasts feared to tread there and prayed to a different deity, one of magic, chaos, and vengeance. Legends spoke of Dra as Valkyra's first sorcerer, a man so consumed by his drive to elevate his people that he opened foul rifts and created the very beasts that stalked the land. Tales said that he was slain by Zora, but was so feared he became a deity. Vara had passed a test of her own, one of blood and sacrifice, and had received power so long as she served Dra's will. His first act was try and taint Zora's champion, to jade her and turn her to the path of violence and mayhem.
Vara, as the Darkheart, used every means available to accomplish this. She caused destruction, refused to speak to her own sister or call upon her by name (a grave insult) and eventually began threatening Kara's friends and allies. In a duel in the Arctic region Kara finally cast her sister down, or so she thought. In truth Vara had faked her death, not willing to die for Dra's goal yet also not willing to utterly defy him either. Kara briefly retired from heroics, believing herself a murderer and thus irredeemable in the eyes of Zora.
Many weeks of mourning passed as Kara refused to fight. She cast her armor into the ocean in her sadness and rage and refused to listen to the consolations of others. In time, she began to see that her refusal to fight dishonored the Valkyran tradition of service over self. Convinced by a friend to take up the fight once again Kara donned a heroic themed set of tights in the standard of her people, and began opposing villainy once again. Kara still does not know that her sister lives.
Abilities
Kara has incredible strength and durability, with hardly anything seeming to be able to harm her. Kara has taken energy blasts, shots from high-tech military weaponry, and blows from other superhumans. While they cause pain and have the potential to faze her or knock her out Kara cannot be injured through strength alone. Kara tends to glow when using her abilities for righteous deeds.
Kara also possesses the ability to fly at super-sonic speeds when she pushes herself.
Skills
Kara is a trained warrior and huntress.
Equipment
Kara utilizes steel plate armor traditionally, and used to used swords and lances prior to coming to Earth. These days Kara wears a super-suit made of decent material.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Kara is exceedingly good against traditional weaponry, and most non-magic villains.
Kara's mind, like all Valkyrans, is affected wildly by magic exposure. Prolonged exposure at high levels can cause mood swings, which can cause insanity and violent episodes. At low doses over time she may became bi-polar like.
Kara's divine protection does not counter threats from people who love her or care deeply for her. On one instance her chosen sister was able to cut her with her fingernails. Kara's protection is essentially divine love, and as such nothing born or ill-will or incidental in nature can pass through it. This extends to objects related to an individual who loved her. For instance, if Kara's mother's sword could be used to kill her. Currently no one has yet to discover this connection.
