Career
Origin
Alexandria and Elizabeth Thurmond, freshly independent at eighteen, moved to Millennium City to make it big... or, at least, get away from their parents, who, while very loving, were a tad on the strict side, especially due to the nature of their father's work. He is a politician, a state representative, opening his family up to slightly more scrutiny (and somewhat higher parental supervision) than the twins preferred in their life as they got older, creating constant paranoia that a single mistake could cost their dad his career. Neither was quite sure what they'd do in the city; they had yet to go to college, and although they had some musical talent - both had endured violin lessons, moving on to guitars later - they knew their dreams of their two-girl band gaining instant fame were unlikely. Instead, both ended up working entry-level assistant jobs at Better World, Incorporated, a small research and development company "dedicated to improving the world through innovative technology"; it was all a bit vague, but the twins liked that they were helping people in some small way - mostly they were happy that they could afford their tiny Westside apartment without asking Daddy for help.
Like any good intern, however, Lisa came across her company's dark secret: they were creating superpower-grade technology and weapons to sell to the highest bidders, mostly among the gangs of the city! The young eavesdropper was caught, but was able to come across to her employers as a "dumb blonde", claiming to be looking for the restrooms. Once satisfied she hadn't heard anything, they let her go. She nervously divulged what she'd heard to her sister that night, and Lexi was immediately determined to go in and gather evidence of the criminal activities. Lisa hesitantly promised to help, unwilling to let her sister walk into danger alone. Working overtime the next day, they waited until the building had mostly emptied before sneaking into the development labs. They took pictures, copied files, and stole several pieces of technology - powered armor with speed-enhancing capabilities, and gauntlets that could project and manipulate either heat or cold. Literally portable superpowers.
Yes, they hadn't planned to steal any actual gear, but once they saw the armors, Lexi knew instantly that she wanted to be superheroes - Lisa took a bit of convincing, but due to the litigious circumstances was willing to agree to anything! Once back at home, the shyer sister was more confident, and readily agreed to give heroism a shot. They gave the armors paint-jobs (a messy but fun couple evenings of work) and picked their elements. Lexi, the brasher, hot-tempered sister, naturally chose the fiery side, becoming Hotflash, while Lisa, the less aggressive one, took on the icy role of Coldsnap!
Heroes
The heroines started out in Westside, taking care of crime in the bad neighborhood. It was actually going pretty well! Their superpowers, despite their lack of training, were generally more than enough to deal with the Purple Gangers and Maniacs. They had a few close calls, like any new heroes, but their string of successes boosted Lexi's ego and Lisa's confidence. They began dreaming again. Little girls would see the duo and wish to be them, they'd be role models! There would be Halloween costumes, action figures! They'd be beloved! Of course, new heroes are a dime a dozen in Westside. It wasn't so much their deeds as their identical appearance that caught the eye of those that cared - something all too common in their lives.
Unfortunately, the little attention they'd gained wasn't all good. Better World wasn't stupid; they'd lost a pair of suits and the element gauntlets, their new twin employees had quit very soon after, and now there were twin elemental superheroes in armor that looked pretty much exactly like the stolen suits. It was pure luck that Lexi and Lisa were out on a patrol when the company sent a their head of security, the dramatically-named Victor Constantine, to their apartment with some of his men, ransacking it in search of their property. As not-stupid as the company was, however, the twins matched them in not-stupidness. All the evidence they'd lifted from the labs was safe in a secure box at a bank, and obviously the suits were nowhere to be found. Still, their privacy had been shattered, and unless they hired some kind of protection, there was nothing stopping the raid from happening again. The twins abandoned their apartment.
Of course, they couldn't let this invasion go unpunished. The twins turned in the evidence they'd had stashed away, and Better World, Inc. was ruined; most of their employees were arrested and put away. A small number, including Constantine, a couple of the board of directors, and a few scientists, managed to disappear, however.
Lexi and Lisa were forced to stay with friends met since their arrival in Millennium City. Though the friend was happy to share their apartment, the sisters felt awful about mooching - especially since they weren't alone. A short time before the ransacking, they'd adopted an adorable grey Miniature Schnauzer puppy named Professor Reginald Snugglebottom the Third - Cat, for short. The sisters tried to make themselves useful to their benefactors by keeping the apartments tidy, acting as honorary maids.
When they were contacted and met by a member of Atlas Phalanx and offered membership in a training program, the twins agreed excitedly. Not only would they be part of a team, they'd become better heroes, and the team had a base on the moon! Lisa managed to get up there first, excitedly spending more than an hour hopping around, gazing at Earth, and waving to an oblivious Lexi back home. She even brought her sister a moon rock as a souvenir! Their first time up there together resulted in spacesuits and a moonwalk, letting them cross a dream off their bucket lists. Despite the fun moments (and a battle against giant attacking robots), however, they decided the Phalanx wasn't a good fit for them. As a group of rather prominent and powerful heroes, the twins didn't bring much to the table. They quietly left the team.
They weren't solo for long, though. Their friend and honorary sister Daphne - the heroine Technologic - invited them to join the New Challengers, and they passed their interview and won the team's hearts with their energy and goofiness. Other things were looking up, as well. The sisters managed to turn their housecleaning "experience" into a job, getting hired as maids for a couple of clients, enough to afford another apartment in Westside, one that was even slightly nicer than their old one!
The twins also met a half-djinn named Zoe Hamilton outside of Club Caprice on one snowy night. The woman was homeless; immune to the wintery cold, she slept on top of buildings, under the open sky. Neither sister could let this stand; though Zoe refused to put them out by staying with them, Lisa eventually convinced her to sleep in an igloo on top of their apartment building, courtesy of the Coldsnap gauntlets. This igloo, filled with food and one of Lisa's stuffed animals, became a nightly ritual, until Zoe finally agreed to become a full roommate inside - she'd spent the night often enough by then, having slumber parties with the duo.
Eventually, Hotflash and Coldsnap battled a Maniac with a startling choice in wardrobe - an inferior, but near-identical version of their own suits! Using flame gauntlets, he almost burned down a local malt shop, but his defective equipment contributed in his easy defeat. The fire was put out, and although the heroes were gifted a lifetime supply of shakes from the store, they also learned a terrible fact - the remains of Better World had put out a bounty for the superhero duo, providing (defective, incomplete) suits to the Westside gangs to help with the hunt.
The twins also adopted a new sister, a teammate named Luna. She may be a long-lived demon (more like an angel, the twins insist), but being shorter than the two has them playfully refer to her as their official little sister.
Lexi and Lisa returned home for Christmas, briefly, with their roommate in toe. The Thurmond parents were happy to hear that their daughters had become friends with a bunch of superheroes, remaining oblivious of the duo's double life.
Much later, a mysterious box was found in the mail, addressed to the two. It was securely locked, and fiddling with it only produced a ten-day timer. After the excruciating wait, the box opened, providing a couple rings and a note from a secret admirer. The letter lead them straight into a trap, however; the remnants of Better World kidnapped the gullible girls at the meeting place. Both were interrogated and almost tortured before managing to break out and escape, fleeing through the halls and discovering a small lab filled with more incomplete knockoff suits - the source for the equipped gangmembers. The twins, as before, stole some of the most advanced pieces they could find - new boots, more advanced element gauntlets, defensive shield-generating shoulderpads, and fancy helmets that would actually protect their heads! On the way out they used this new gear to take out Constantine, who had donned a small mechsuit to finish them off once and for all. They delivered him to jail, and returned later fully-suited up to clear the small base out.
As of May 22, the twins are now nineteen years old!
Personalities
Both twins are energetic, overly hyper really, and almost unnaturally cheerful and optimistic. This has on more than one occasion been blamed on their love of sweets; they both even keep emergency candy in the belts of their suits. They tend to be a little childish, or perhaps old-fashioned, with very Disneyish ideas of romance and adventure. There are sometimes signs that the twins are hiding how intelligent they are beneath ditzy exteriors, occasionally busting out nuggets of knowledge that those who didn't know them might think unusual. They share many of the same hobbies and tastes in video games; Lexi doesn't quite get why Lisa likes playing scary games (it's to boost her bravery!), but is always willing to sit with her (she won't play alone) so they can scream and curl up in fear together. They both enjoy dressing up as well, and thanks to holographic rings gifted to them by Daphne, have a number of cosplay "outfits" to use.
Alexandria/Hotflash
Born first - by a scant few minutes, at most - Lexi has always proudly embraced the "big sister" role, becoming fiercely protective, reckless, rebellious, and hot-tempered, though she also enjoys nothing more than teasing her sister mercilessly. She is mildly tomboyish, at least compared to Lisa. Lexi is easily the more aggressive of the two sisters, especially when Lisa's safety is at stake. She can be flirty and bold, and is the natural leader of the twins. Also notable is her recent predilection for taking selfies with superheroes, creatures, or pretty much just anyone or thing that interests her. Very rarely asking for permission to do this, she usually sneaks up to the victim, snaps the picture, and then runs off before the selfie-ee realizes what has happened. Lexi's biggest fear is of undead: vampires, zombies, ghouls, ghosts, it doesn't really matter to her. She finds it extremely hard to believe any of the living dead can be genuinely harmless or benevolent.
Elizabeth/Coldsnap
The "younger" sister, Lisa is by far the more innocent of the two, never having even been on a real date before coming to the city due to her shyness and nerves - her bad experience letting a boy take her to a school dance didn't help. She's terrible at conflict, but she tries to be brave - for her sister and friends, if nothing else, and over time this has grown into a more reliable confidence. She can be childish and bratty at times, and still owns at least a few stuffed animals that she sleeps with. She's easily embarrassed and flustered, especially by Lexi. She tends to be a follower, deferring to Lexi or anyone else with sufficient authority. Although easy to scare or upset, Lisa is just as easily cheered up, and quick to forgive. Her largest fears are spiders - including spider-people - and puppets, specifically of the stringed or ventriloquist variety; she's perfectly fine with sock puppets and Muppets. She is, however, a little more open-minded regarding undead. A little.
Appearance
Lexi and Lisa look almost completely identical, something they work hard at, exercising and dieting to maintain about the same weight and build - for whatever reason, and unusually for twins, they enjoy being duplicates. They're fairly short, bodies slender and increasingly fit thanks to their new activities, and despite their love and addiction to chocolate and candy. They both sport light blue eyes and lemony blonde hair, often kept up in pigtails during strenuous activity. Unless they're playing up the twin angle, Lexi generally prefers to keep her hair loose and a little messy, while Lisa likes putting hers in a braid. Clothing-wise, Lexi tends towards darker colors and bolder outfits, while Lisa usually wears light, airy colors, and remains relatively modest unless goaded by her sister.
Powers
Armor:The twins have no powers when not wearing their armored suits, though they are both athletic. The armor itself is flexible but very tough, and padded to protect them from most anything that they might come across - from the neck down, at least. The armors' provide the wearer with the ability to run at incredible speeds, though nowhere near supersonic, maxing out somewhere under 100 MPH. The suits also produce, when moving, a minor kinetic force field that protects the wearer from hurting themselves while running, deflecting insects and debris. This field reinforces the armor padding itself to keep the twins safe.
The improved shoulderpads the twins have recently acquired generate a stronger version of this force field, allowing for additional resistance even when immobile. Their new boots are slightly comfier, and are outfitted with integrated propellers for the rare aquatic use. They also integrate better with the gauntlets to provide more variety in manipulating their elements, letting them kick fire or ice around!
Masks/Helmets: The masks of the suits only protect the face and ears, leaving most of the head and neck exposed. However, the earpieces and mouth guard contain: communications equipment, including a private channel between the suits; automatic sound-dampening technology for loud noises; light-dampening in the visor to prevent eye damage; voice-masking software for the exterior vocal feeds; air filtration scrubbers; even a small emergency air supply - only good for a half hour, at most. The visor has a night-vision mode, but the twins aren't very happy with it. Turns out reality isn't as good as the movies made it seem!
The helmets the twins later acquired have the same features, but also come with more useful HUDs that the twins have little idea how to operate. There's a clock feature, though, that's nice, and the nightvision is improved, as is the air supply. The visor slides up to expose their faces, more convenient than removing the masks.
Pyro/Cryo-Gauntlets: As one might guess, these large gauntlets produce their element of choice - either heat/flame, or cold/ice. Various gestures and movements are used to manipulate the elements in a variety of ways beyond simple beams or projectile attacks; Hotflash, for instance, can create a fiery area around herself or rain embers from the sky, while Coldsnap can encase enemies or create walls of ice.
Their newer gauntlets are stronger and sleeker, but slightly less armored. They provide for more powerful effects.
"Flight": Both of the girls have discovered alternate means of transportation by using their suits in a way slightly out of the recommended design. Coldsnap can form a platform of ice to levitate while standing on it, which is very fast (she's basically flinging the board around and riding it as it goes), extremely hard to control, and dangerously fun, while Hotflash can store excess heat in her suit by running at superspeed to generate friction, then jettison it through her gloves and boots to give her inaccurate flight.
Music: Both twins can play the violin! Lexi also plays the drums, and Lisa plays the guitar. They're slightly above-average singers, as well.
Jobs
The twins took advantage of a deal for a free batch of business cards to advertise their services, that read "Alexandria and Elizabeth Thurmond, Official Housecleaners, Musicians, Cosplay Models, and Princesses", with a small princessy crown logo in the corner. Despite these claims, only their status as a housecleaning service is in any way official; Lexi filled out the proper paperwork and everything! Though they only have a couple clients, they hope to find a niche providing discrete maid service to superheroes in need of organizing their mess without having to explain to some civilian why they have Captain Amazing's outfit in their closet.
