History
Fresh began life as a psionic human, and retains the psionic abilities transferred into his android body along with his Westside-proud personality.
Early Life as Martin Garay
Martin Garay was a psionic boy from Westside. He dreamed of breaking away of the streets by becoming a world-renowned rapper, and making a difference in the world for the better. His best friend was an inventor named George del Sol, who had daydreams of a low-cost, high-functioning android which would revolutionize the work and home lives of his generation.
Martin wrote rhymes and George dabbled with scraps in the del Sol garage. Since Martin's home life was dysfunctional, with a sister in a gang, a mother on drugs, and a father who was a dirty cop, Martin spent as much time as he could at George's place. Martin's sister, Ann, was jealous of all that time spent away, however.
When George's first android was nearly complete and Martin had just completed a mixtape, Ann told her gang leader, Wayde, about the android.
Kidnapping of George del Sol
Wayde wanted the android for himself, so his thugs stole it and kidnapped George, demanding he build them more.
Martin spent the next several weeks trying to locate George. During those weeks, he used his telepathic abilities to try to learn as much as he could from the police and from the local gangs, and his powers grew in strength. He made several enemies among the local gangs, especially the New Purple Gang, who didn't like all the snooping around.
The weeks culminated in a single day of chaos. Martin found George locked in a warehouse, having just completed a second android, a giant, powerful one made to Wayde's specifications. Wayde and his thugs moved to attack Martin just as a New Purple tommygun burst into the warehouse, guns blazing. In the calamity of it all, Martin's psionic powers created a violent storm of psychic energy, thrashing the gangsters and their weapons all across the warehouse.
The first android awoke, imbued with Martin's personality, emotions, and psionic energy, but with no memories intact. Horrified at finding the dead and injured gangsters and young men strewn around him, he unlocked George's handcuffs to free him, then fled the scene.
Martin, as everyone had known him, died in the warehouse. Wayde was killed as well, but the second, larger android also awoke and fled before anyone could stop him.
Superhero Beginnings
The small android had no idea where he'd come from or why, but he knew he wanted to be a rapper. He began performing all over Westside, and even got some gigs downtown. The rapping robot was quite the phenomenon, and he took the name Fresh D. Roi D. for himself.
After one of his live shows downtown, Fresh witnessed a man being mugged at gunpoint in an alley nearby. His psionic powers burst forth and he knocked the gunman out cold, saving the victim's life. The man offered to help Fresh in any way he could, as he was a mechanic, and introduced himself as Todd Dodge.
Todd knew some gadgeteering superheroes, and introduced Fresh to them. A friendship developed over time, and Fresh began to act out heroically more and more. The more time he spends with other people, however, the more he has flashbacks to human experiences--the taste of lemonade, brushing his teeth, putting bandages on papercuts. Perhaps one day he'll remember being Martin, and reunite with his old friend George, whose life he saved.
