“Being a superhero is like trading away your innocence for power, and then you try and recover it through the people who'll consider you as their savior from the darkness of this world. With this power however; comes a responsibility to not turn away from the darkness filling this world that most people don’t want to see. Some people however actually see the darkness but lack the means to make a stand or directly fight that.” –Empress Vanguard

Major Story Arcs

Early Life

Samantha Charleston grew up in Millennium City in the west side neighborhood. She lived a modest life there with her family. She had friends, went to school and had a relatively normal child hood. Her greatest love was following all the super heroes in the news and she longed to be one. But no one in her family had any powers so she was set to live out her life as a normal girl just as her parents wanted. High school was a hard time for her some people felt her hero worship was childish; her powers also began to manifest themselves.

Birth of Empress Vanguard

Samantha was sixteen when her powers first began to show. It was subtle at first a little stronger than normal, She grew a little quicker, didn’t get hurt as easily. One morning she crushed her alarm clock and night stand next to her bed, her family picked up on it and had her checked. After some tests it was confirmed that she was a Meta-human. No one understood why this happened to her but to the horror of her parents Samantha couldn’t wait to be a hero. Her parents tried everything to talk her out of it, but there is only so much you can do to stop a rapidly growing super being and eventually they caved in knowing there was nothing they could do to stop her, the only demand they had was she register herself and her powers with the government which she happily did. Being the super fan of all things super heroic she named herself Empress Vanguard, partially after one of her favorite heroes. At age 18 she had stopped growing ending at the height of eight feet six inches tall her powers fully manifested. Her hair had paled and turned white with a hint of blue and her eyes are a soft glowing blue/white.

Collage Life

In collage Sam met others like here, not many but there were a few that stood out. Like Aegis, Psivereign and Temple. She did well in class but that took a back seat to being a hero, she worked alongside the others she had met and made a small name for herself as a hero Millennium City. Temple and Psivereign both mentored her and this is also when she learned about her great weakness to Telepathy. After doing some experiments with Psivereign they found Sam was easy to read and the two began working on ways for Sam to be more resistant to Phonic manipulation. Temple in the mean time spent time after classes teaching her to fight better.

Collage also brought up the problems of romance. Sam was never really ready to deal with it and always looked at is as something that was secondary. However meeting Psivereign and spending so much time with her Sam was hooked. It took her while to admit how she felt to herself, however she did not have long to think on this.

Dreadful Days

The super villain Dreadnaught showed up just as Sam was starting to try and sort things out. Her friends wanted to track him down and bring him to justice but with all the personal turmoil in her life Sam’s Alter ego Empress Vanguard was not up to the challenge and the first battle with Dreadnaught was almost her last. His energy cannon slipping past her defenses and wounding her to her own surprise she was not as invulnerable as she thought she was. Never before in all the fights she had been in up to that then had she been hurt. Psivereign came back around that time; Sam wasn’t able to hide anything from the powerful Telepath so she spilled her feelings to her hoping she would understand. After a few days in the hospital the two had time to just talk, they spoke for hours but in the end Psivereign couldn’t return Samantha’s feelings and left the woman unintentionally heart broken.

Dreadnaught reappeared and began his rampage of robbing banks and pharmaceutical company’s. Empress Vanguard along with her friends rushed to the scene, they tried to stop Dreadnaught but he attempted to brush them aside and escape. Empress angry after the events attacked Dreadnaught not holding back. The pair battled for a while, Empress however supported by her team mates managed to finally subdue Dreadnaught and tore his helmet off in the process. She stopped just before striking him again when Aegis cried out for her to stop. The man inside the suit they were battling was Aegis’s father, Dr. Gregory Churnak.

Empresses New Cloths

Aegis hid herself away after her father’s trial, Empresses and her friends were growing worried. Empress finally tracked Aegis down to her dorm room where she had been hold up for days. Saddened to see her friend like this and against Aegis’s will she heaved the poor girl out of her room wheelchair and all. Aegis was resentful at first but came around after a while and the two had a good walk ending in dinner at Darren’s Pizza. There they began talking about what it was like being a hero; Aegis mentioned to Empress that it may be time for her to get a real costume. The one she had been wearing thus far was made of normal materials and could not really stand up to much wear and tare before needing to be replaces.

Empress agreed and after some pestering over Pizza agreed to head to Greer & Harlick in the Renaissance center of the city. The pair began to brows the isles looking at the different materials and parts, the shop specialized in making costumes for superheroes and have done so for more than twenty years. Aegis wanted Empress to wear something heavy and protective, knowing the taller woman’s physical strength would let her easily carry even the heaviest of armored suits. Empress however wanted something lighter and more classic. She settled on a pair of high boots and a half body suit with long sleeves. A simple mask with a built in communicator finished it off. The coloring of the suit took the longest but the pair finally settled on some shades of blue.

Powers and Abilities

Super strength – Empress Vanguards physical power is far beyond human levels, despite her only moderate muscle tone she is capable of lifting a Viper Python Tank and throwing it a good distance. In tests she was able to punch threw the hull of a derelict naval Warship. She has shown feats of strength far beyond even this but she can only maintain it for a limited time and risks injuring her if she pushes it.

Limited Invulnerability – Her body is unnatural tough and resilient to damage. Most small to medium weapons will not harm her however; larger weapons like those for taking out armor will stagger and mildly injure her. Vehicle mounted weapons and most types of energy weapons will hurt her as well to varying degrees.

Flight – Threw energies unknown to her she gains the ability to fly and hover. She is fast flying and finds it a better means of travel then to be on foot. Spending a good deal of her time hovering rather than walking, this also helps her with moving quietly.

Rapid healing – her healing speed is about five times that of a normal person, Small cuts and bruises heal in hours. Larger wounds in days, a broken bone would heal in a matter of a week or two.

Resistant to normal heat and cold – Her body is more resistant to high heat and low temperatures in the normal range. Things like Cryogenic weapons and flamethrowers however are not something she can resist.

Complications

Magical weakness – Magical energies projected at Empress Vanguard have a draining effect on her , they may not damage her but they drain her endurance causing her to grow tired more quickly than normal, as well as a minor effect on her strength. She knows this and avoids magic as much as possible.

Susceptible to Telepathy – Empresses Mind is like an open book when it comes to mind reading, She has however learns a little about protecting her mind and is now around as difficult to read as an above average human.

Little Combat training – While powerful and tough Empress Vanguard lacks training. Before she became a hero she had never even been in a fight, she relies largely on her strength and toughness to win a fight more than her skill. This however is slowly changing as she gets more experience as a hero.

Low alcohol tolerance – Despite Empress Vanguards size she is a super lightweight when it comes to her tolerance for alcoholic drinks. Knowing this she avoids anything with Alcohol in it.

Physical Transformation – To use her powers Samantha needs to transform from her smaller normal form into the larger white haired glowing eyed woman everyone knows as Empress Vanguard, She rarely changes back these days and never speaks of it. If asked she tells people she lost the power to change. There are times where she changes in her sleep and she worries that if she got knocked out it may happen then as well.

Can be knocked out and around – While her body is super durable a powerful enough blow or a strike in the right place can knock Empress out. Also Empress is not “heavy” in the sense that powerful blows will knock her off her feet or over. She may not be hurt but she will be off balanced.

Day job: School Teacher – No a weakness per say but given she is very visible and public about who she is now, Empresses day job could be used against her in a variety of ways.

Glowing eyes – Her eyes glow all the time day or night the only way to “shut” them off is for Empress to close her eyes or wear a full helmet with one way glass.

Friends

Psivereign – A powerful Telepath Psivereign was hunted by the PSI organization before being placed in protective care in Millennium City. Her area of expertise is Telekinetic, Empathy and mind reading. She works very hard to keep her mind reading from probing people around her, she can however tell the general mood for people. Her powers have helped her friends get through tough situations more than once.

Empress met Psivereign in collage the two were very close once but their friendship became strained after Empress admitted her feelings to Psivereign, Who already knew. Being able to feel how empress felt long before the taller woman told her. Psivereign had no interest in Empress like that and looked at her more as a sister. Empress tried to hide her hurt but the two have never been as close as they were before.

Foes

Dreadnaught – A relatively new villain in Millennium city he is mostly content with robbing medical research labs and banks. Empress Vanguard and Dreadnaught have clashed a few times but she has never come close to arresting him. He does avoid causing harm to people and avoids long battles that could spill out into the streets being more content to slip away when able. However if cornered he is a terribly powerful opponent and his name is well places. Both his armor protection and firepower are frightening to behold.

Dreadnaught was defeated by Empress Vanguard and her collage friends, Aegis, Psivereign and Temple when he was attempting to rob a medical warehouse. It turned out his real name was Dr. Gregory Churnak, Aegis’s father. After he was arrested he willingly gave all the information the police needed to recover all the stolen property he had obtained and willingly submitted to his guilt. After everything was said and done Dr. Churnak was sentenced to two years less a day in prison which he gladly accepted. When asked why he committed the crimes he did he simply states, “A father would do anything to see his little girl walk.”
