Who is she?
Even in a world of superheroes and the supernatural, Penny is something of an anomaly.
She's just one of those mysteries that refuses to make any sense!
Is she a clown?
Is she a mime?
Both!?
But why does she talk...?
...And why won't she shut up already!?
Origin
EVERY superhero has an origin story, right? Some kind of tragic backstory of how they got their powers and embraced their destiny to become a hero?
Well not Penny. She just kind of showed up out of nowhere one day.
...No, really!
There are no records of her prior to her appearance in 2018. She's claimed that her earliest memory was waking up after having fallen out of a tree. In one rare occurrence that Penny decided to cooperate with a police interrogation, a psionic hero was brought in to perform a mind reading. After being rickrolled by Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", they were able to verify that she wasn't suffering from amnesia, but rather that she simply didn't have any memories from before 2018 at all.
Given her chaotic nature, getting her to cooperate for any further tests has been a challenge. She ages normally, estimated to be a 15 year old teenager when she first appeared, now a 20 year old young adult. A DNA test collected from a spitball she fired once was able to confirm that she is indeed just a regular Caucasian human girl with no active or latent mutant genes and no known relatives.
Superpowers
Penny's superpowers truly defy explanation.
That is, because no one can identify how they work or why she even has them in the first place. Penny's superpowers could perhaps best be described as a limited form of reality warping, although what exactly those limits are no one can say. Its clear that her powers aren't based in any kind of science since she regularly defies the laws of physics, but she doesn't seem to follow any sort of rules of mysticism either. Its believed that her powers must be some sort of powerful innate magic, but anything beyond that is completely unknown.
One theory proposes that Penny might somehow embody or personify a platonic concept, some mystical aspect of chaos or absurdity, a concept she seems to be particularly fond of. The theoretical nature of such a being would perhaps explain the exasperating vagueness of her abilities and her perplexing past. Her existence is, itself, an open-ended punchline to the absurdist joke that is the meaning of life.
Whether there is any truth to any of this is impossible to say, but its after this theory that authorities have named and classified her powers as 'Absurdity', and its after her favorite absurdist philosopher, Albert Camus, that she proudly calls herself, an Absurd Hero.
The exact scope of Penny's reality warping abilities is uncertain, as even she doesn't seem to always be in total control of them, or even conscious of what she can and can't do until she tries or fails. The closest "guideline" she seems to follow would be what's called the "Rule of Funny." She is, first and foremost, a comedian and prankster at heart. Any heroic, criminal, or otherwise mundane acts are primarily for her own and other's entertainment, and she rarely wastes an opportunity to try and get a laugh. Its unclear whether she is truly bound by this rule, or whether she simply chooses to abide by it on principle, whether consciously or subconsciously.
Abilities
Because of the variable nature of her powers, listed below are some examples of feats she's proven to be capable of:
- Miming imaginary objects, actions, or sounds into reality
- Spontaneously changing costumes
- Mimicking other superpowers
- Defying physics, such as gravity
- Incredible acts of dexterity, acrobatics, and flexibility
- Walking through one door and exiting through a different door
- Juggling and other talents
