The Carinae Federation is an alliance of sentient species spanning several systems within the Carina Nebula, currently comprised of the Solvians, Droleq, and Vakari.
Contents
Solvians
The Solvians are an amphibious race of herbivores from the marsh planet of Ardahl. They were the first of the Carinae species to achieve interstellar flight, and possess highly advanced starships capable of traveling up to one light year per hour. Solvians are shorter and frailer than humans, averaging about 5'3 and 100 lbs. Their hands possess only three digits, leading them to develop several types of robotic 'limbs' that are typically built into their suits. Solvians are among the few sentient species that hatch from eggs, and their males and females look virtually identical.
Solvian society is heavily focused on education and technological advancement, with prominent scientists and engineers effectively holding more power than the elected officials that oversee them. Although they at times appear cold and unemotional to other species, Solvians maintain a strict code of ethics. They are loathe to interfere with natural ecologies or a species development, unless they're certain it will yield positive results in the long term. The majority of Solvian art takes the form of stylized devices, typically designed to create soothing or dazzling imagery while leaving the viewer confounded how they function.
The Solvians use automatons to accomplish nearly every 'mundane' task, including warfare. The relatively few live personnel that operate in combat zones are versatile commandos, utilizing advanced cloaking technology to perform recon, demolition, and assassination on high value targets. Their navy functions similarly, with small crews assisted by advanced computers piloting a vast array of warships.
Relations With Other Species
The Solvians are generally considered upstanding and considerate by the intergalactic community, though their reputation within Carinae space is a bit more complicated. Though the Droleq and Vakari are grateful to have been 'uplifted', they're not blind to the Solvian's coercion and manipulation. Despite Carinae policy and regulation technically being determined by democratic vote, only the Solvians are capable of manufacturing much of the technology that the federation relies on. So while a measure the Solvians disapprove of may pass, they can cease to provide technologies or services that would facilitate it, many of which may be essential to the economies or daily lives of every species in the federation.
Thankfully, the Solvians typically use these measures to enforce laws that preserve the freedom, safety, and dignity of all sentient species... or at least they did before the closing years of the recent war. The Solvians have purposefully fomented resentment between the Vakari and the Malakar, fearing what the species would be capable of if they were to ally. While they've been somewhat successful in keeping the pair at odds, neither are as oblivious to their machinations as they believe.
Despite their sometimes arrogant and condescending attitudes towards other species, the Solvians are generally well-meaning and charitable. They're a somewhat uncommon sight outside of Carinae space, and those encountered are typically traders, researchers, or diplomats working on behalf of the Carinae government.
Droleq
The Droleq are a mammalian species of omnivores from the arid planet of Goberna.
Malakar
The Malakar are a mammalian race of carnivores from the volcanic planet of Turakov, and are the only species in Carinae space to achieve interstellar flight without the Solvian's assistance. Malakar are large and powerfully built, averaging 6'4 and 230 lbs for males and 5'11 and 180 lbs for females. They have backswept horns on their heads and bony ridges on their shoulders, evolved to help them survive the frequent earthquakes and landslides of their tectonically unstable homeworld. Their four-digit hands and feet have ridged knuckles and powerful claws, ideal for climbing, digging, and hunting.
Malakar society has been a competitive corporatocracy for thousands of years, beginning with openly warring merchant houses and evolving into rival megacorps that compete through spying and sabotage. The seven most powerful corporations form a loose government, with each controlling their own massive swath of the planet. These corporations are effectively their own nations, specializing in a specific field and having many of their own distinct laws and customs. Although Turakov operates almost entirely laissez-faire, the few laws agreed upon are harshly enforced. This does little to curtail corruption and lawbreaking, instead ensuring that only those with the cunning and resources to cover their misdeeds achieve prominence.
Very few structures on Turakov touch natural earth. Entire cities are built on stilted platforms, ingeniously balanced and supported to withstand massive earthquakes without jostling the structures and citizens above. Turbines and generators built into the platforms use the force of the quakes to power much of the city above, with the remainder being produced by thermoelectric plants powered by volcanic vents. These renewable natural energies keep the Malakar's production costs to a minimum, allowing them to undercut most species in the galactic market.
The Malakar's primary industries are military grade cybernetics and robotics. All but the poorest members of the species are fitted with some manner of surgical enhancement, and nearly every corporate structure is patrolled by squads of lethal combat droids. Prominent CEOs typically keep their own custom models off the market, but the rest are for sale to anyone in the galaxy that can afford it. Other major Malakar exports include elaborately styled weapons and armor, jewelry containing natural gemstones, and various lower-priced luxury technologies.
Relations With Other Species
At their best Malakar are known to be boisterous traders offering high quality products, at their worst murderous pirates and ruthless slavers. Since losing the war, they have become the pariahs of the Carinae Federation. They resent the Vakari, hate the Droleq, and despise the Solvians, sentiments mirrored by each respective species. Turavok is yet to be fully rebuilt since its occupation, and the planet's once booming industries have been severely limited by sanctions and regulations.
The Malakar are currently designated a 'subject race' of the Carinae Federation, and are ostensibly ruled by corporations selected by the victors of the war. Their ultimate fate is still to be decided, with many fearing their culture and economy will be permanantly stunted by their occupiers. Malakar have become a more common sight in the galactic community at large, with millions fleeing in various directions in the aftermath of the war.
MCAD782
The Malakar Combat Automaton Designation 782 are a line of artificially intelligent combat robots developed on Turakov, many of which developed sentience. Exactly what caused them to become self-aware and why some failed to achieve sentience remains unknown, apparently even to the AIs themselves. A request for asylum radioed to a squad of Federation marines is the first known communication between the 782s and organics.
