"Si vis pacem para bellum."

CapAdamantStar.png

Like the Samurai and Knights of old, Captain Carter Williams was being armored. Only instead a symphony of leather and iron, the ambiance included the high whine of pneumatic drills, and the heavy clank of thick plate metal. Carter felt like a car in pit stop. His crew flew around the armory platform, normally reserved for vehicles, switching drill attachments, operating equipment lifts, and chatting among themselves. It was hard to hear what they were saying: each of them clothed in safety gear, including full bodied hard helmets, muffling their voices. That, and the cacophony of industrial sound pretty much drowned out the lion's share of their dialogue.

A crewman took his arm, and began to fit a metal plate onto his bicep, hooking it neatly onto the black, rubbery underlay. It looked unimpressive: little more than a fancy wet suit. But Carter knew, that if it worked as designed, it would allow him to wear almost a ton of the experimental armor, and still have the strength to break bones like twigs.

Another of the faceless mechanics shoved at his leg, fitting the last plate onto his thigh. Carter was constantly being pushed and pressed, kicked and shaken. Today was a live fire exercise, using armor-piercing rounds and explosives, but he was more afraid the constant jostling and the noise would drive him mad.

As the crew put on the finishing touches, drilling the last bolt into place, kicking and shoving it to make sure it was properly fastened, a slender, fit woman in conservative dress clothing approached from the far corner of the garage. She wore her brown hair tied up in a bun at the back of her head, and though she was smaller than any man in the room, she commanded attention like it was second nature. Her name was Catherine Alexander. Major Catherine Alexander, and she was one of the few people in Project: Gardener that Carter respected.

"You look ready." The Major looked him over, stepping up onto the platform. It was nice to hear a voice again, now that the noise had died down. The group of men saluted, as did Carter. This, accidentally, and quite easily, knocked one of his mechanics aside, casting him onto his back. The Major's eyes followed, viewing the soldier: a mix of amusement and satisfaction in her eyes. "At ease. You alright, soldier?"

"Yes, ma'am!" said the mechanic. He started to rise, before the Major offered a hand to the fallen armorer. She smiled at the Captain, helping the wayward worker onto his feet. "Impressive, Captain." Carter turned his head at the embarrassed crewman. "Sorry about that." The rest of the crew carted over a secure crate, punching in a keycode. With a muffled click, the lid unlocked.

Major Alexander watched them for a brief moment, before turning her gaze to Williams. Her expression was softer than usual. "So, are you ready, Captain? It's one thing for the plates to resist armor-piercing munitions. It'll be another with a human underneath."

The crew hefted the last piece of armor from the secure case: the helmet. What took the crew four men to handle was child's play for Carter now. They were about to rig it onto the crane nearby, when Carter reached out to them. "I'll take it from here, boys."

They hauled the gleaming headwear into his outstretched hand, which easily grasped and took over for them. A dull metallic ring sounded as his gauntlet clamped onto the helmet. "If things go my way, I won't be taking any hits." He lifted the helmet and placed it on his head, while the Major, and presumably, the rest of the crew, looked on, skeptical.

"I'm approaching this like any other exercise. I'll put this thing through the paces, but I'd be foolish to walk into gunfire." The crew made one last shuffle to bolt his helmet into place. Major Alexander nodded to herself, in thought for a brief moment.

"I suppose... But we need to know how safe your little project is for the..." The crew backed away, and one gave Carter's head a final shove. Nothing moved. "...pilot." Carter smiled, and stepped forward. The weight of the suit was almost invisible: he moved as if wearing nothing at all. It was each step that clanked or a thudded on the ground that gave it away. Carter stood in front of the Major, looking down at her, even as she scrutinized him. "Are you sure you don't want someone else to run it first?"

"Don't worry ma'am. Even without this thing, I don't break easily."

"He isn't the most...conventional candidate."

"Convention isn't the name of the game, Doctor."

"Then what is? He's a grunt. In our interview, he seemed interested only in football and his father's inheritance."

"Do you know of any 'grunts' that can get away with lying to their psychiatrist?"

Before he was Captain Adamant, Carter Williams Jr. was a career soldier. He enrolled at USMA (West Point) after high school, at the insistence of his uncle and mentor, Colonel Ira Cross, and excelled. He managed a sterling reputation, both academically, and athletically, becoming the star halfback of the Army Black Knights for three years running.

Graduating with honors, and with the freshly awarded rank of Captain, Williams was deployed almost immediately to West Africa, as part of a greater operation to supplement UNTIL forces in the region. Eager for both a proving and advancement, he wasted no time in whipping his company into one of the most impressive the Army had seen in decades. Individually, he was a machine. He became known for pushing himself and his men to their absolute limit, without breaking their resolve or efficacy in combat. Many VIPER incursions were routed entirely, and it seemed nothing could stop Captain Williams and his men. He served two, grueling tours of duty, and they began to push Carter's limits. His unyielding nature soon backfired.

The last five months of his service were plagued by setbacks. Casualties gradually rose in number, and because of their forward position, Williams' company was being pressed by VIPER insurgents. It was becoming clearer, to Carter, and his men, that the Captain had gone too far, and now the soldiers were paying for it. The loss of ground persisted, culminating in the death of Carter's right hand, and friend, Lieutenant Lenny Richards.

UNTIL eventually committed reinforcements, bringing the mounting tragedy to an anticlimactic end. Carter, in shame, could hardly remain around his men. It was hard enough to be a young Captain, but his failure in Africa made it nigh impossible to salvage trust with the soldiers under his command. He had been so used to success, the failure was almost unbearable.

Carter was relieved of duty, and returned Stateside.

"You're sure you can convince people, wearing that tin can?"

"I wouldn't waste your time, ma'am."

"Why not go with something more...advanced?"

"There are enough flying suits out there. This will stand out. This is grounded. Honest."

"Hmph. Like you."

Carter believes in rigorously testing his body and mind, and the result is deserving of "Unbreakable."

Tall, built, with brown hair and brown eyes, Carter is a natural-born lady killer (if they don't find him too tall). He stands at about six feet and seven inches without his armor, and weighs about two-hundred and forty five pounds. Most of his training is applied exercise: rock climbing, swimming, running, mixed martial arts, etc. His weight training is only supplemental, but you wouldn't know it by looking at him. Captain Williams is built like a force of nature.

He keeps his hair cropped short, and always tries to keep clean shaven. Though, his exploits as Captain Adamant don't always afford time for a razor. More often, he sports some shadow or stubble. His eyes are intense, serious, and focused. He isn't against cracking a smile or even a joke, but he's usually the last to do so. Carter, and therefore Captain Adamant, generally appears ready for action at a moment's notice. Too seldom does he relax, especially around others.

His juggernaut of an alter ego, Captain Adamant, is, unsurprisingly, an even more impressive figure. Fully armored, the Unbreakable Man stands at seven feet and two inches, and weighs in at almost a ton. His armor has a dull sheen to it, and isn't very quiet. Light metal thuds and clanks always precede him, announcing his presence.

The armor consists of over fifty individual plates of Adamant Alloy. Most of them are secured either by slots on the underlay beneath, or by large bolts that feature prominently across the surfaces of his armor. Just like he does unclad, Carter walks within his armor with a purposeful grace. The armor hardly appears to hinder Adamant's movement at all.

Roleplaying Hooks

  • Captain Adamant is career military. He can and will talk shop, and tends to respect veterans and those currently serving more than others. He can't help it.
  • Captain Adamant is noticeably new to the superhero's game, and he knows it plays differently than the soldier's. His costume, powers, and his fighting style lack the flair and showmanship that his peers often possess. Advice on this front from his fellows tends to be well-taken, albeit reluctantly.
  • The particulars of Captain Adamant's past are murky at best. Why? An outstanding citizen like him ought to have little to hide.
  • Captain Adamant is always looking for opportunities to learn more about his allies (and enemies).
  • Captain Adamant is known to volunteer for grunt work. Patrol? Stakeout? Guard duty? Adamant doesn't care: he's your man.
  • Adamant loves a good party. It just takes some coaxing to get him off "Hero Mode" and into "Party Mode."
