It was founded by Francis Blake, a Chicago-based biologist and entrepreneur, in 1935. It is currently headquartered in Millennium City, Michigan, in the City Center district. Blake Biotech employs 310,000 people globally. Derek Blake is the current Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer.

Blake Biotech is the world's largest independent biotech company by revenue as of 2011. In 2009, BusinessWeek ranked Blake Biotech first on the S&P 500 for being one of the most "future-oriented" of those five hundred corporations.
