Raoul isn't much of a hero, but he tries his best. While he genuinely likes helping people, hes also just as interested in basking in the light of his comic-book idols. Duke runs his own hobby shop and is especially interested in other manimals and mutants.

Personality

Raoul is a chatty, excitable individual with a good heart and an idealistic sense of mortality. This regularly conflicts with his cowardly nature and he often finds himself in dangerous situations despite being a wimp. Raoul will save your life from gun-toting wackos, but he'll probably being crying while doing it.

Interestingly, the things that Duke considers scary or weird don't quite line up with those of the average citizen or hero. He feels perfectly at home among vampires and many supernatural creatures, and for their part they tend to regard him as one of their own.

Abilities

Raoul doesn't have any superpowers, though his inherent animal traits give him a natural edge over normal citizens and many metahumans. While he can fly and has especially keen eyesight and sense of smell, the following abilities may qualify as superhuman:

Super-hearing

Like most bats, Duke can hear a ninja fart from a block away. His giant ears can pick up sounds far outside the normal range of even canine heroes. In other words, if it makes a sound, he can hear it (Assuming hes paying attention, of course).

Echolocation

Duke can emit a high-pitched "chirp" and listen for the sound to bounce off objects, allowing him to identify barriers and fly completely blind. Although he has never had the opportunity, this could also allow him to find invisible opponents.

Chiroptera

Duke can understand the chirps and squeaks of mundane bats, and occasionally the bestial tongue of more supernatural bat-like creatures, such as monstrous vampires. As a side affect, such beings often see him as kin.

Comic Nerd

Raoul is an especially avid comic book reader and collector, and his interests branch out into cartoons, movies, actions figures, and other paraphernalia. This gives him unusual insight into the lore and powers of metahumans that many normal citizens lack. While his information isn't always accurate, it is not uncommon for Duke to know or guess rumors and trivia about superheroes that they assumed was secret or not well known.

Trope Conscious: Although not exactly a superpower, Raoul is all too familiar with the many cliches and tired plot-lines that heroes and villains regularly fall into. This can occasionally give others the impression that he is breaking the 4th wall.

History

Current

Raoul is normally a carefree, laid-back individual who lives a relatively mundane life for a manimal. However, recent anti-mutant attacks and his involvement with the Prometheus Union have shaken his reality. More and more he is beginning to see a grim, serious side of himself that he doesn't like.

Because non-human children see his store as a safe, mutant-friendly place, he is especially concerned that it may become the next target for a terrorist attack. More than that, he fears he won't be able to protect anyone when the time comes.

Bat Country Comics

His pride and joy, Duke purchased the store from its previous owner after saving up for years. While it doesn't make him much money, it pays the bills and occasionally allows him to indulge in his hobbies.

BCC is a large, worn looking building that caters to a wide variety of things, from superhero toys and clothing, role-playing games, miniatures, cards, and of course, comic books. Duke keeps the store open late on weekends to allow for tournaments and gaming groups. He hopes to one day renovate it or move to a better location, but for now that is just a pipe dream.

• Raoul Duke is named after the central character of the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The line "We can't stop here, this is bat country" is one of the movie's more popular quotes.

• Avenged Sevenfold's song Bat Country is a homage to this film. Raoul himself is a huge fan of Avenged Sevenfold and their genre of music, giving him his punk rock/hipster look.

History

While on a visit to Monster Island, Raoul stole and smuggled a Teleiosaurus egg back to Millennium City. He hatched the dinosaur in his basement using s reptile incubator, and has cared for it ever since. Named 'Mr. Sharkface', the creature is about the size of a horse and can breath lightning. Thanks to Raoul's care, the dinosaur is relatively tame and can be safely approached with proper precautions.

Duke has trained the animal using traditional police-dog methods, though the Teliosaur seems significantly smarter than most domestic animals.

Sharky has no real goals or ambitions beyond being a faithful companion, though he does like getting attention and eating new and interesting animals.
