Barbara Blaster (shorthand for The Santa Barbara Blaster) is an up-and-coming hero from the West Coast. Though mostly active in California, she has traveled to other parts of the US where more help from superheroes might be needed.

Origins

Early Life and Discovering Fire

Eliza Mills was raised in a middle-high class of lawyers in San Diego. Of course, Eliza wasn't much for ambitious study. Instead, she was fairly well known for hosting some of the more popular parties in school and generally was very well-liked by most of her classmates. Indeed, her childhood and high-school life were far from abnormal. There was just one thing about Eliza that struck some people as unusual; one of her favorite hobbies was tanning. All manner of people would see her down at the beach in the bright sun, but she almost never showed any signs of tanning. When asked about it, she also admitted that she never needed to use sunblock despite her fair skintone. It was a fairly subtle point, anyway, and had almost no repercussions. At least, not until her college years.

At her first year in UC Santa Barbara, Eliza decided that she'd spend time down at the beach completing a take-home paper test. This turned out to be both a mistake and a huge epiphany for her, as it was on that sunny afternoon that she discovered her ability to generate fire, accidentally roasting the sheet of paper to ashes. Realizing pretty quickly that paper catching fire in casual sunlight wasn't a normal occurrence, she headed over to the campus' health center and consulted the doctor, who, though initially skeptical, found out quite firsthand what power was contained within Eliza. After turning off the fire-alarms and putting out the flames on his suit, the doctor forwarded Eliza to Dr. Barcus Ramses, an expert in mutant biology at the Santa Barbara hospital.

Ramses was well-convinced of Eliza's mutant status, and was also able to figure out some other traits of hers. What he found was that her powers were very highly solar-based. Her body was very efficient at using and absorbing every wave and particle of sunlight and ultraviolet light, and instead of causing damage to her skin, was passing deeper into her body and supplying her with energy. This explained why Eliza never was able to get tan, as well as how she managed to stay vigorous and healthy despite not being particularly active physically. To add to this, Dr. Ramses concluded that she had gathered so much energy in this 'power-core' of hers that it overflowed and managed to produce immense heat from her body, causing the paper to combust. With control, Ramses Said, Eliza would be able to project this inner-heat at any given time and perhaps develop her ability into an effective means of defense.

Initially, Eliza couldn't care less about all of this. All she wanted to do was make sure that she doesn't fail that takehome test she just burned!

Cloudy With a Chance of Snow

The Alaskan Icemaster; Regiceide
Within a couple of months, Santa Barbara weather became extremely bizarre. Clouds rushed in and snow, of all things, began to fall upon the subtropical city, putting the area's flora and fauna at huge risk, as well as effectively wiping out the city's infrastructure. Behind all this was Regiceide, a villain from the icy reaches of Alaska with an intense hatred of all warm climates.

Eliza was not enjoying this one bit. She could feel herself getting weaker as the sun was blocked out by the snow clouds. Catching a bus back to San Diego, she recuperated with her parents for a few days until she got a call from Dr. Ramses asking her to come back as soon as possible to try and get rid of Regiceide. Knowing that she wasn't going to get anywhere without an education, let alone without a sun to produce energy from, she took off back to Santa Barbara to deal with the villain.

The entire ordeal was a very spontaneous one, to say the least. At this point, Eliza had had no formal training with her power, had no real equipment to fall back on, and had no idea what she was up against. At the same time, Regiceide wasn't a particularly cunning enemy, nor a particularly fast-thinking one. Not suspecting a preppy blonde schoolgirl to be wielding the powers of fire, he was forced to flee back north to recover. With that, the snow that he had brought about cleared out, and Eliza soon became hailed as a hero.

Deciding that the academic lifestyle was too slow for her, she welcomed the variety of superhero work with open arms. She proclaimed her decision to become a defender of the city at the Mayor's speech following the attack, and with that, she had her new iconic outfit tailored for her. Becoming the city's emergency fallback, Eliza Mills became The Santa Barbara Blaster.

Barbara Blaster has a very 'Sanguine' style personality. Outgoing and active, she's very extroverted and usually loves to be around people and talk. Her carefree nature leads her to leap to conclusions, ignore some cues that people want to be left alone, and sometimes gives her a hard time when she needs to take time to absorb information, but she is usually quick to pick up on the facts when they are described plainly.

Barbara Blaster is reported to be somewhat prejudiced; she can be visibly frightened if forced to deal with Latino or African-American strangers, but on the other hand, treats those she does know to have knowledge with a great deal of respect. More simply, Barbara Blaster is very predisposed to making stereotyped judgements, which certainly can put her at a disadvantage when making certain friends.

Combat Specifications

Barbara Blaster burning baddies at the beach
Barbara Blaster, though not seemingly physically powerful, has an incredible amount of energy. She can sprint at a speed of 20 miles per hour for up to 30 minutes before getting tired, and can also use heat to lift herself off the ground and fly at a speed of 30 mph.

In combat, Barbara Blaster's signature weapon is Fire Generation. In truth, she is only creating enough heat on a surface to make it ignite, and with some surfaces, such as sand or metal, will cause melting. In any case, Blaster can generate up heat waves of up to 3192 degrees Fahrenheit; enough to cause even objects that wouldn't normally burn to do so. On the flipside, Barbara Blaster's body is highly attuned to high heat conditions; as such, she does not normally take much damage when exposed to extreme temperatures, both high and low.

When injured or tired, Blaster can simply take a breather by using Solar Energy Absorption. Blaster's body is genetically modelled in such a way to absorb energy from the sun. This energy builds up over time until Blaster is capable of generating heat. With training, however, Blaster has also learned how to apply this energy to mend her own wounds, sometimes in the middle of a battle. Even when the odds look stacked against her, she can bounce right back and throw more firepower at her enemies. The only caveat is when the sun is obscured. Thus, you don't see Barbara Blaster working as much during the night or on a cloudy day.

  • The 12th 40. She was originally a force-style character. That powerset choice was very shortlived.
  • Her short backstory means this is the shortest page I've done so far. Lookit that; it only reaches halfway down the page!
  • Her costume design has consciously utilized the colors of Santa Barbara's city flag.
