Background and Origin

Early Life

C. James Nelson was born in Westhampton Beach, NY. He was raised primarily by his father, Cullan, after his parents divorced in 1984. Cullan was a disciplinarian, shades of his time in the Marines during the Vietnam conflict. CJ and he would butt heads regularly, with Cullan often threatening to send him to military school.

His juvenile record has since been expunged, but in his teens, CJ had a record ranging from petty theft to vandalism. His life took a different turn at 17, when he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Despite going against his wishes, Cullen signed the parental consent form to allow CJ to enlist early.

Military Service and Infection

After basic training and graduating from the Infantry Training Battalion, Nelson saw several deployments overseas. His first was part of a NATO coalition in the Bosnian War. While on guard duty at a refugee camp outside Sarajevo, he was attacked and wounded by a wolf. In the ensuing struggle, the wolf escaped, but not without sustaining injuries. CJ's wounds were treated, but it didn't take long for him to notice a change. He had always been strong, but not this strong. He had always been fast, but not this fast. The bites left by the wolf healed quicker than the medics anticipated. He could differentiate between people solely by scent.

When his vehicle was attacked by an RPG during a perimeter patrol, CJ realized just how deep his new abilities went. With no radio contact and a punctured lung, CJ carried his sergeant over two miles back to the refugee camp before passing out. The medical staff were baffled by his rapid healing, and called it miraculous.

Despite several incidents involving property damage, CJ spent 10 years in the Marine Corps, and left with an honorable discharge.

Contracting Work

After spending several years in Iraq and Afghanistan, CJ found he had little in the way of skills to offer the civilian world. For approximately five years, CJ acted as a covert operative, mostly dealing in wetwork and field support. During this time, he had several run-ins with VIPER, ARGENT, and other, more clandestine organizations.

An incident at a VIPER clutch in Belarus left CJ as the sole survivor. As such, he harbors a special hatred for them.

His abilities were made a matter of government record after he attempted to join PRIMUS in late 2005. The serum was rejected by his body, and further study forced him to register with the US government. He returned to government contracting, this time as a superhero. He was given the moniker (to his chagrin) of American Werewolf, and used his abilities to continue a career in covert operations.

He still takes the odd contract now and then, but most of the time he spends at home in Westside, raising his son, Cormac.

Powers, Skills, and Attributes

Lycanthropy - A bite from a werewolf has transferred the curse. CJ has the ability to transform into a wolf-man hybrid at will, although the transformation is painful and takes about 30 seconds. In his hybrid form, CJ is still capable of speech and fine motor coordination, but is quicker and stronger. However, he is more prone to anger and recklessness, and he fights to keep his primal urges down. Under the light of the full moon, CJ is unable to control his transformation, and is much more likely to give in to his urges.

Augmented Immune System - His disease grants him an augmented immune system, capable of fighting off all but the strongest diseases without a problem. In addition, his altered blood is able to heal wounds quicker than normal. However, these powers do not apply if the wound is made with a silver weapon, or is poisoned with wolfsbane.

Heightened Senses - His senses are heightened both in and out of his hybrid form. His sense of smell is magnified, making it difficult to sneak up on him, but also rendering him more susceptible to scent masking (for example, he can't stand the scent of vanilla). His hearing is also more sensitive, allowing him to hone in on a conversation across a busy street, and picking up sounds in higher frequency ranges.

Expert Marksman - Years of training in small arms has made CJ a force to be reckoned with. He has a working familiarity with all projectile weapons, most explosives, and some experimental weapons, and is an expert with the M16A4 assault rifle.

Martial Arts Master - CJ holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as well as being a Martial Arts Instructor Trainer in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. In his hybrid form, he is also proficient at fighting with tooth and claw.

Strong Will - CJ has trained to ignore pain and injury, both to body and mind. He has no fear of death, and will fight to his last breath for something he believes in.

Gear and Equipment

Small Arms - CJ owns a small armory's worth of weapons, from pistols of various calibers, to assault rifles, to more exotic weapons such as rocket launchers. Generally, he carries two pistols minimum at all times, with his larger guns used when prepared for trouble.

Sons of Fenris Kutte - The symbol of his motorcycle club, CJ rarely goes without it. The usual leather vest, with a three-patch design on the back. The center patch shows the Fenris wolf, the hand of Tyr in its bloody maw.

Body Armor - CJ owns several different types of body armor, ranging from simple Kevlar to the heavier plated flak jacket.

Cheryl and Cormac

CJ met Cheryl while recovering from the punctured lung he received in Bosnia. Their relationship was a tumultuous one. CJ's alcoholism, coupled with his condition, caused for a very physical and unfortunately abusive relationship. Cheryl filed for divorce in 2004, and in 2005 it was finalized. In 2005, Cheryl also gave birth to a son, Cormac, retaining sole custody. In 2010, Cheryl was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and pushed for reconciliation. CJ finally saw his son for the first time after five years. Unfortunately, in 2011, Cheryl succumbed to her disease, leaving CJ with custody of Cormac.

CJ has made several friends and contacts over the years, some of whom have powers of their own.

  1. Jared Walsh: Also known as "Backdraft," Jared has been CJ's closest friend and confidant for years. Growing up best friends in Westhampton Beach, CJ and Jared lost contact after CJ joined the Marines. They reunited, doing super-powered contracting work.
  2. Marisol Cortez: The woman called "Sangria" was born Mexican wrestling royalty. In addition to working toward perfecting the art of lucha libre, her father, the second generation Sangria, taught her the true meaning of lucha. Working as a defender of the weak and protector of the people, Marisol and CJ met during an operation under Mexico City, in the ruins of Tenochtitlan. There are rumors of romantic involvement between the two, but both deny it.
  3. Andromeda: Ainsley Lake, following in the family tradition of fighting for justice, stalks the rooftops of Westside, bow in hand. She and CJ have an uneasy alliance, after she witnessed a confrontation between CJ and the Ocelot.
  4. The Sons of Fenris: A motorcycle club with members around the world, all with one similarity: the curse of their blood. They mostly come from fairly aggressive professions: fighters, soldiers, police, bodyguards. Whether they were drawn to the professions because of their condition, or would've joined them either way, remains to be seen. The club is legitimate, although word on the street is that some chapters have been starting to make trouble.

  • The Ocelot: Carlos Ocelotl is the club President of the Nahuatl motorcycle club. Deeply involved in criminal activity, the Nahuatl, and particularly "The Ocelot," are worshipers of Xipe Totec, the inventor of war. Gifted with obsidian skin, the Ocelot gained his position as all Nahuatl presidents do: by eliminating and sacrificing the previous. Sooner or later, Xipe Totec will want more than the Ocelot can provide, but Carlos is doing his best to stave off that inevitability... by offering human skins to his patron. The Nahuatl have come into conflict with the Las Vegas arm of the Sons of Fenris, as the Ocelot sees a werewolf hide as the best possible sacrifice.

General Perception

Unless privy to classified information, most people would never know about American Werewolf. His profile, however, is starting to grow, now that he's freelancing in Millennium City. Most would see him as just another street-level hero.
