Youth
Christian Jones was born December 22, 1979 in Seattle, Washington. His mother, Julia, died while giving birth. His father, Martin, owned a small business with ties to companies in the area of California that would later be known as Silicon Valley.
His father recognized the coming tidal wave of electronic advancement on the horizon, and so encouraged his son to play with new advents - sometimes joining young Christian in the fun. It even seemed like Christian's interest with electronics, and eventually computers, grew with the increasing success of his father's company.
Apart from video games and gadgets, Christian took an interest in the old comics his father had collected as a child. His son seemed particularly dazzled by the super hero comics of the sixties and seventies - the bright colors of their costumes and their dedication to protect the innocent was enough to spark the young boy's imagination for hours at a time.
Christian's first real-life exposure to super heroes occured was when he was seven years old, in July of 1986. The villan Power Crusher and the VIPER organization were clashing in Seattle, while in another part of the city, Ripper attacked on his own agenda. The Protectors arrived to prevent civilians being caught in VIPER's crossfire, eventually being attacked by Ripper as well. The events were televised, and the heroics of the super team brought super heroes closer to home than they'd ever been for Christian.
Adolescence
It was during Christian's junior high years that his powers began to manifest. Because his body itself was still developing, though, his powers were equally unrefined. His school teachers, and he himself, simply mistook his abilities as an affinity for athletics. He engaged in several after-school sports activities from season to season, and found that he excelled in areas that tested his strength and speed.
His first true burst of super speed occurred while he was camping with his father in Canada one summer. The twelve-year-old Christian had been hiking with his father, and they were several miles away from their campsite. A small landslide under Christian's feet separated the two, causing the youth to slide into a ravine - making the path unreachable from the bottom. An encounter with a bear prevented his father from following his son to help him. Christian was uninjured however, and he had been paying enough attention to his compass as they'd traveled that he believed he would be able to make it back to camp on his own. The same bear which had chased Christian's father off found its way down the ravine, and frightened the boy so much that he ran with an incredible burst of speed toward the campsite. He arrived a full hour before his father, who had himself been travelling as fast as he could. Christian was afraid of his new found ability, and so kept it secret; claiming that he'd found a shortcut that had been inaccessible from the path they'd been following.
Young Adulthood
As Christian grew, he taught himself to control his speed and strength, so that he could more easily hide them. He felt guilty participating in sports with such a clear advantage over his peers, but he feared quitting his teams would raise suspicions. He only used his powers marginally in order to maintain his performance records. But maintaining his performance records also meant remaining a superior athlete, despite his disdain for using his abilities for what he felt was personal gain.
Christian also proved to be quite the academic. He had no reason to suspect he had any sort of super power that lent him to being more intelligent than his fellow students, but with help and encouragement from his father, Christian grew comfortable with his math and science courses, and excelled in these subjects. It wasn't long before he qualified for accelerated programs that introduced him to software programming - a field with which his father could strongly relate, as his own company was now picking up momentum.
Disaster once again nearly threatened Christian's way of life when a 7.4 magnitude earthquake decimated the San Francisco Bay area in 1995, severing almost all his father's business connections in California. It was only a year before that his father's company incorporated, and renamed themselves Marvelous Technologies, with his father at the head of the company as the chief executive officer. This business move provided an opportunity for investors to help the company grow, and the growth allowed enough independence to avoid the economic backlash from Silicon Valley's destruction.
Seeing his father succeed in the face of such a crisis inspired Christian to work ever harder. His grades improved, and by the time he was a senior, he qualified for both academic and sports scholarships to many prominent universities across the United States.
College Years
Christian finally chose to attend the University of Southern California, and in 2001, was one of the first students to take courses in The School of Cinematic Arts' new Interactive Media Division. During these years, he also continued to participate in sports programs, secretly using the campus' facilities to hone his super speed and strength - which he'd finally vowed to one day use to defend people in the face of adversity.
When he had time to break from college and visit his father, he worked as a freelance programmer for his father's company. After graduation, Christian returned home to work full-time for Marvelous Technologies' Software Studio, a division dedicated to developing training software and other tools for the United States government - in particular, the Department of Defense. Some of Christian's earliest code was used as the basis for the database software PRIMUS currently uses for superhuman registration.
Career
Shortly after returning home, Christian arranged for a secret meeting with his father, Marvelous Technologies' CEO, and the board of directors to reveal his super nature. They all agreed to keep his identity secret, per Christian's wishes. The board created a subsidiary company under the guise of a "smart tactiles" research and development facility, Marvelous Industry. Christian's father and a select group of individuals once affiliated with the DOD used the cover to create a suit to assist Christian with his goals of protecting the innocent. Three years later on December 19, 2006, Christian Jones registered with PRIMUS as his super alter-ego, "Mr. Marvelous."
Since then, Christian has continued to work for Marvelous Studios as a lead software designer, while secretly keeping the streets of Seattle safe.
Present Day
The Tremendous Technological Titan and the Super Speedy Samaritan
Officially, Mr. Marvelous is the face of Marvelous Technologies and its subsidiaries. Some argue that this is a conflict of interest; that the corporation will use him to their own ends, even if it means calling him away from a threat to the innocent. Marvelous Technologies contends that their ultimate goal is to help the world move toward peace and prosperity for all - and such an action would, in and of itself, be villainous. Mr. Marvelous himself has responded to such claims, stating that the moment he felt that Marvelous Technologies were trying to take advantage of his super abilities, that he would sever all ties with the company. Representatives from the corporation have publicly agreed that Mr. Marvelous would be well within his rights to do so.
However people view this arrangement between the hero and the corporation, Mr. Marvelous has practically achieved celebrity status in his home state of Washington. A local comic publishing company in Seattle has begun producing a fictional series about the super hero, and its popularity is quickly spreading across the state. Mr. Marvelous has appeared on local news and talk show broadcasts, and is rumored to appear in several commercials promoting a video game being produced by Marvelous Technologies' Software Studio.
A Marvelous Millennial Mission
Marvelous Industry has had some unexpected success with their "smart suit" technology, and the subsidiary is becoming a force unto itself. UNTIL has requested Mr. Marvelous' presence in Millennium City, along with representatives of Marvelous Technologies, to discuss the viability of these suits as an alternative to powered armor - particularly in covert operations. Christian Jones is among these representatives, as he has designed much of the unique computer language the suit uses to communicate to its processing unit, along with the heads up display through which the suit communicates to its user.
Since his arrival, Mr. Marvelous has been making his presence known throughout the city - especially amongst the criminal element. His crime fighting serves as a double-edged sword; he's helping to keep the city safe, and the city itself provides the perfect environment to show off his suit's capabilities to UNTIL. Many citizens are already beginning to recognize him, and local law enforcement has even begun calling on him for his help.
The Ultimate Guardians
Mr. Marvelous has teamed up with one of the highest-profile super groups in Millennium City - The Ultimate Guardians. Using his recruitment as an excuse to upgrade his smart suit, he had Marvelous Industry manufacture his new costume with the colors of his super group. Some have playfully observed its similarities to Orion Prime's suit.
He hasn't had many opportunities to meet his comrades, yet, but those he has met have received him warmly.
What does the future hold? We'll have to find out, since Mr. Marvelous isn't quite fast enough to disrupt the space-time continuum!
