Background and Origin

Place of Birth

Rychard was born in an alternate Earth in which magic has played a significant role in history. In this world, the equivalent landmass to the British Isles is known as Albion, and is highly fortified as a result of the threat of the Empire to the south.

At the age of 120(still a child in elven society), Rychard suffered a terrible loss, when the settlement where he lived was attacked by trolls while he was playing in the nearby forest. On top of that, the tragedy was compounded by the fact that he was catapulted 60 years forward in time, while the attack was in progress. When he exited the forest, he did not recognized many of the people that were now living in the village, and the village were still suffering under the depredations of the trolls that had taken up residence in caves nearby. On finding out what had happen, he swore to free the town and avenge his dead parents. He then proceeded the next day to march to the cave that the trolls were inhabiting, and challenged the leader of the trolls to a duel to the death. When he barely surviving decapitating the head troll, he ordered the other trolls to forswear the consuming of the flesh of sentient lives. He then left, after realizing that there was nothing to hold him there anymore, and that there were other places that needed to be freed and protected. After that he wandered the world, helping where he could and learning the ways of the blade and of the spell book.

Arriving in This Dimension

Rychard arrived in the Champion Universe by accident, when the portal system he was using was struck by an entropy-curse driven lightning bolt. During the transit, Rychard saw an immense being, which told him that there was a realm that needed his help even more than his own world. This entity then proceeded to impart the knowledge that he would need of the world that he would soon arrive in. When he got here, he put his considerable intellect to work in creating a life for himself, both as a ordinary citizen and as one of the flashy costumed heroes that populate this strange new world.

Appearance

If you saw Rychard on the streets, fighting crime, you might wonder if there is a Ren Fair somewhere nearby. In his well-embroidered and well-worn grey long-coat and armor, and with his sword at his hip, he does look rather medieval. But, if you are lucky enough to see him without his helm, you will realize that this is no costumer, as his elven ears are quite prominent. With his shoulder-length copper hair, and his angular features, some women find him irresistible, while others wonder what is the big deal. However, in his civilian identity he uses illusions to hide his otherworldly nature and appear older.

Personality

Despite speaking perfect English, Rychard is prone to using odd turns of phrase, that betray his lack of full understanding of this world's culture. Also, he is frequently sarcastic and cynical, when dealing with things that bore or annoy him. He is known for being likely to overreact to threats and demands. If he thinks he has been wronged he will unleash a scathing reprimand or occasionally a screaming rant at who ever he preceives to be in the wrong. He is also prone to respond to violence with violence, but does his best not to harm, or let come to harm, innocents.

Powers, Skills, and Attributes

Powers

Blade Magic - As a blademage Rychard is well versed the use of magic to enhance or alter his attacks. For instance, he has mastered the ability to add fire or electricity to his sword strikes. He can also use his sword as a conduit to make attacks at range, by firing a series of magical bolts from his sword. In addition he has learned to use his magic to weave a number of effects that are useful both on and off the battlefield.
Arcane Duelist Tricks - He is also trained to use magic to gain a direct tactical advantage by either altering the way he interacts with the battlefield or granting himself abilities that give him the upper hand.


Skills

Enchanting Items - The ability to craft and enchant items to enhance and boost his natural abilities is a common and important skill for blademages to master.
A Scientific Education - Having always been curious about the way the world works on a fundamental level, Rychard has completed doctorate level studies of several physical sciences, and has even taught a course on the intersection of magical structures and engineering principles, and the gestalts that can arise between the two.
A Facility With Languages - Fluent in eight different languages of Earth, Rychard shows remarkable ability with languages that he had never heard before coming to this dimension.
Martial Arts - Having trained in the Way of the Blademage, a purely physical style that is designed to complement his magical abilities, Rychard is capable of taking on many threats using only his blade. His fighting style is designed to be fast and defensive, while still granting him many options to deal with aggressors as he chooses.


Attributes

Intelligence - Despite how he relies on and take great pride in his intelligence, Rychard is in many ways, handicapped and isolated by his vast intellect, and is just now realizing that his overuse of his brain-boosting headband is just exacerbating the situation with his friends.
Naturally Acrobatic - His capacity for leaping and flipping about is very useful in combat, often making his attacks hard to predict.
Elven Senses - The fabled acuity of elven senses gives him the ability to see in the dark, easily spot and hear things at great distance, and grants greatly expanded peripheral vision.
Elven Longevity - As an elf, he also ages at 1/20th the rate of humans, and does not need to sleep.


Gear and Equipment

Gear

Intelligent Scimitar(Thae'Zamiir) - This blade acts as a mentor and adviser to Rychard, teaching him how to fight even better and warning him when there is danger. However, when it comes to demons, it is utterly irrational and demands that Rychard tracks them down and slays them. This sometimes puts a strain on their friendship, as it will, at times be at odds with the current mission, or lead to delays. Recently, Rychard has discovered that the local cosmology means that the demons he "kills" are just sent back to the Nether, to recuperate. He has thus far fail to convince Thae'zamiir of this fact.
Enchanted Gear - As a blademage, Rychard has a collection of personally enchanted items that he has customized to work well with his magic. This manifests in two ways, first there is the base enchantments that will work for anyone who puts the item on. However, each enchantment has a second level, one that only works for Rychard, and only while he holds the enchantment active in his mind. For more details, see Arcane Panoply.


Arcane Panoply

This collection of enchanted items is almost the only thing that Rychard still has of his native dimension.


Magi's Ward - This enchanted breastplate, when donned, expands across the entire body, protecting all vital areas. It also causes the skin to harden on being struck. In addition, it can project a force field that turns aside physical and magical attacks alike. The armor itself is more effective vs. non-magical attacks.
Psyche Guardian - A helm that has been enchanted to protect his mind, it also lets him identify and communicate with nearby minds.
Eyes of the Eldritch - These magical spectacles supply several enchantments related to sight, like the ability to see magic, a visual catalog of everything around him and protection from light-blindness
Mantle of Terrible Authority - This cape amplifies Rychard's natural presence in order to allow him to convince people to follow his commands. It also protects him from the same, and allows him to imbue his verbal commands with physical force.
Thunder Gauntlets - These enchanted gloves are intended to augment the wearer's strength and also grant the ability to punch through most material in order to traverse through walls and floors.
Lightning Greaves - Enchanted to grant agility and enhanced reflexes, these greaves allow the user to react with the speed of a lightning bolt.
Bracers of Action - These vambracers allow him to multitask and accomplish tasks faster, increasing his ability to act and end fights faster.
Ring of the Stout Persona - The enchantment on this ring both blunts the effects of mind powers and and empowers his accuracy with mental powers of his own.
Headband of Endless Intellect - This headband is enchanted to grant a twofold boost to intelligence, one constant, and the other on an as-needed basis. However, the demands that his day job places on him has lead Rychard to overuse the secondary enchantment, in order to maintain his capacity to invent.
Girdle of Esoteric Staunching - This belt grants an preternatural ability to recover from wounds and makes it so that grievous wounds do not hamper him as much as the should.
Clasp of Energy - An amulet that bestows immense stores of energy and amazing restorative capacity.

Lover

Currently, Rychard is deeply involved with his teammate, Gizmo, and is considering proposing to her.

Teammates

Rychard's team, the Outsiders, are a group that was secretly put together by UNTIL to have an active group that they can call on to investigate things that they don't trust to PRIMUS and are too dangerous to send normal agents. When they are not on missions, they assist the Champions in keeping Millennium City free of crime, often taking on the odd things that the Champions are not use to dealing with, like hidden wars between villainous groups, or obscure magical threats that pop up from time to time, leaving the big running battles to the flashier Champions...


Primary Team
  • Gizmo: Rychard is quite close to this young lady, mostly due to the similarity between what his company does and her style of magic. She is quite understanding of the fact that he is still a little off-balance in this dimension, due to the fact that she is also from an alternate dimension, albeit one that is far more similar to this one. She is also working with him to find a way back to his home realm, but he is increasingly unsure if he will go if they succeed.


  • Subject Omega: Omega gets along fine with Rychard, but secretly suspects that his "magic" is technological in origin and that Rychard just affects the image of a magician to play on superstition. This is not helped by the fact that Rychard has a strong grasp of modern technology.


  • Snapshot: Despite the fact that they are both owners of tech firms, Snapshot and Rychard have little in common and rarely spend time together outside of missions. Snapshot is secretly jealous of Rychard's relationship with Gizmo, and subtly sabotages it every chance he gets. However he is careful to make sure that neither is aware of his actions and intent.

Auxiliary Team
  • Knight Master: These two warriors have great mutual respect, due to their understanding of the dedication it takes to master both the mystic and martial arts.


  • Trace: Rychard's relationship with this super-agent is tentative. On one hand, Rychard knows that she is reliable, but on the other he is not sure how much the spy is spying on them.


  • Skim: This speedster is never still long enough for Rychard to really get to know him. However, Rychard understands how it feels to be isolated by who and what you are, so he tries to look out for Skim and make sure the others include him in their activities.


  • Perikal: As the most alien of the group, this four-armed psychic from half of the way across the galaxy is hard for Rychard to understand and bond with. Given the fact that neither one can get a good read on the other, but is sure the other one can secretly read them, this is unlikely to change soon.


  • Binary: Though Binary rarely fights in the field if he doesn't have to, Rychard understand that it is caution not cowardice that stops him, having seen him fight when forced to it.


  • Titan: Rychard thinks that this brick is ill-trained and unskilled. He has suggested to him that he should take up martial arts in order to develop discipline and precise control of his strength. Titan in return, claims that he doesn't need any pseudo-mystical trappings to control his powers, that all he needs is for people to stop attacking his friends.

Other Allies

UNTIL: As his team was founded and is still sanctioned by UNTIL, Rychard has a good working relationship with many people at UNTIL. He is on especially good terms with Project Hermes, and with UNITY.

Champions: As they share a city, it's only natural that Rychard would get to know the Champions. He works with them every chance that he gets, knowing that despite the flashiness of their actions and the fact that they had licensed their image to a comic book company, they are a solid team that does a lot of good.


Enemies

Cairngorm: This villain wields the Earth Gem, one of the Elemental Gems of Humanity. Rychard has opposed this vile druid many times as he attempted to use his blood magic to conquer and destroy.

DEMON: Between Thae'zamiir's urgings and his own repugnance at what they do and are, Rychard has often clashed with this villainous organization. He rarely comes away with a clean victory, but he has also never allowed them total victory.


Thoughts

  • The Trimegistus Council - "They're hide-bound elders that make Dwarves look radical, but their hearts are in the right place. And if there is one thing they can do well, it identify and train the mystical defenders of this realm."
  • DEMON - "These guys are utter abomination! Even the demons that they keep as pets think that they are uncontrollably insane, and will actually risk final death to help you to defeat them if freed."
  • Robert Caliburn - "Ah, the glorious Archmage..." *rolls eyes* "Let's be honest, the guy is an arrogant ass. Sure, he is powerful, but his enchantments are sloppy, his incantations lack grace and, well he lacked some imagination with his magic. Heck, Earth would have better off with ME as the Archmage, and I don't even qualify for the post."
  • Witchcraft - "Now there is a supermage that would have made a good Archmage. Maybe Caliburn will get himself killed in a fight that he couldn't handle, and we will get her as Archmage. We can only hope."
  • UNTIL - "I wish all law enforcement was as professional and clean as these guys. I'm kind of proud to be able to work with them so frequently, and honored that they would put their name on the line for our team. That really means something to me"
  • PRIMUS - "I've seen the abuses and failures of PRIMUS first-hand. They are UGLY, and if they ever got out to the public the American People's trust in their government would drop to an all-time low. And, if it wasn't for the fact that it would cause more harm than good, I'd expose everyone of them."
  • Cairngorn Stoneblood - "It's not his magic I fear, its his mastery of the Earth Gem. If someone doesn't take him out soon, he might get it in his head to go after the other gems. We may well be doomed if he does."
