Introduction
"Alright, so, let's assume that, in this world of ours, there are two poles. Two conflicting sides. Call 'em what y'bloody want - Dark and light, Yin and Yang, Chocolate an' Vanilla. Both sides are bad for us, and I'm the grey that stops either side gaining the upper hand."
He's got a dead man's hand and sees the world through rose-coloured glasses - The man who calls himself Leo is a charming creep, and he knows it. Castellar is an enigmatic and often reckless man. Known by many as an urban mage and occult detective, he has only recently come into the spotlight. Over the course of his career he has danced with demons, tipped the scales of destiny and cheated death. He's a cosmic gambler, always ready to let fate - or chance - fight his battles. What the man lacks in brute power he makes up for in charisma and problem-solving skills - his life and the lives of others are a game to him, but a game he takes seriously. He sits between the forces of light and dark, and stands up for humanity in acts of dimensional warfare. Under his watch, humanity will have their free will.

Powers and Abilities
Magic
Transmutation of space, time, matter and energy, conjuration of objects & entities, astral travel, hypnosis, exorcism, sympathetic magic, enchantment, cybermancy. These powers are accessed via spells which can have any mix of verbal, mental, material, somatic and ritual components. From musty old grimoires and corny new age books to home-cooked chaos rites and cutting-edge alchemy, Leo does it all. He's a jack of all trades, choosing no single path but instead taking what he needs - what works - from anywhere he likes. More recently, Leo has been able to channel his magical abilities at-will, usually in the form of pyrokinesis or illusory tricks.
Eyes of the Exorcist
Leo was born with the power to see and communicate with the "true self" of different beings. He sees the world as it truly is, free of illusions and trickery, which is often horrifying and maddening. The shades he wears suppress this power to keep the more frightening visions at bay. At times, he has premonitions which often spell doom for him and those he cares for most. This power, both a blessing and a curse, can be compared to living in two worlds at once.
Trickster
Leo is not only trained in occult arts, he was also once a performance magician. He is highly agile and possesses deft hand-eye coordination.
Devil's Luck
Leo is an experienced gambler, brilliant with cards, dice, games of chance, deals and pacts. He seems to display the ability to survive the harshest of circumstances by sheer accident. Whether this is karma in action or plain old coincidence is up to debate.
Warded
Leo has protective tattoos adorning his body, to stop attempts at possession, mind control and other forms of spiritual attack. These tattoos reinforce his already-strong willpower to make the man nearly incorruptible.
Background
Youth
Leonard Castellar was born on the 25th of February, 1984 to a financially-troubled family in London's East End. His mother was a schoolteacher and his father was a conman. An only child, he spent his uneventful childhood years socially isolated, unable to relate to or get along with his peers due to his eccentric behaviour and insane visions. This phenomenon greatly disturbed Leo's parents, and upon psychological evaluation he was deemed mentally ill - Schizo-affective Disorder. Everything changed in his late teens, where he found a place amongst the rivethead crowd - Weirdos and social "outcasts" who not only accepted but embraced his diagnosis. A creative soul, the adolescent and ambitious Leo carved a name for himself in London's underground music scene as an industrial/darkwave artist under the name "Lurch", with his new friends cheering him on all the way. For a time, it was all sex, drugs and rock and roll.
Initiation
Finally young adults, Leo and his band of snot-nosed punks began treading a bleak, dangerous road. Under the lead of his then-girlfriend, Andrea Mathers, they styled themselves as hardcore satanists and thrived on sexual deviancy, substance abuse and the all-important shock factor. This translated into their music, the sounds and lyrics becoming harsher and more twisted as the cultist mindset etched itself in. These arrogant kids had absolutely no idea what they were delving into. One lazy, party-filled night a mysterious hooded figure approached the group. He refused to speak his name, and promised them great things. Things beyond their current horizons, a place to belong and cultivate personal power, to push the limits of their feeble abilities. For the first time, Leo rebelled against his colleagues. While the others gave themselves to this new cause, Leo stayed behind. The gang never returned. They had disappeared, and he needed to know why.
Leo set off, scouring the streets for answers. The police were of no assistance, these troublesome youths were not a priority. After months of relentless hunting, he tracked their location to the basement of an old, abandoned sharehouse. He had found what he was looking for, but not what he wanted to see. His friends were all there, every last one. Most of them couldn't be identified due to hideous scarring covering their entire, naked corpses. There was blood all over the place, painting the walls and floor in organic arrays of esoteric symbols. Some of them were nailed to the wall in a mocking crucifixion, others were burnt to a crisp and others still were subsumed in viscous, boiling black liquid.
For the first time in nearly a decade, Leonard was alone. This monstrous event would go on to haunt him for the rest of his life.
Illumination
The next few years were spent in and out of psychiatric wards, some kinder than others. Leo continued to pursue his musical career, starting up the industrial metal bands "Riot Disciples" and "Voltnuts", achieving limited success. In the spirit of "Fight fire with fire", he delved further and further into the occult, desperate to master it to combat the all-consuming sadism which claimed the lives of his friends. Along the way, he met new friends and found love in Vicky McCalman, a stunning young pyrokinetic. This relationship proved short, however, as McCalman grew frightened of his research. Over the years, Leo amassed a plethora of arcane knowledge, growing to become a formidable sorcerer.
The Rats
Desiring a new start and a blank slate, Leo headed for the USA, basing himself in Millennium City. There he met a woman named Rose-red, leader of the outlaw vigilante group "The Rats of Anarchy". Motivated by heroics work in Westside, police corruption and the need for some cash, he joined the MCPD as a detective in the special investigations division. Meanwhile, malevolent forces were brewing. The evil warlock mastermind Ignatius Spellfyre had risen from defeat. Seeking to fulfill a personal vendetta against Rose, "Iggy" attacked the Rats relentlessly, staging countless street battles which grew larger and larger. Just as the war against Iggy reached its zenith, Rose and many of the other Rats vanished, leaving Leo to create a new generation of urban heroes.
Now
Leo, eager to keep the spirit of his former team alive, forged a new organisation, cleverly named "The New Rats". Following a particularly violent incident on-duty, he was fired from the MCPD. Iggy remains at large, while Rose has reappeared to lead the Rats once more. Leo has found a student in Wicket, a boy who "sees dead people".
Publicity
Leonard is a hit in the british musical underground and is known to plenty of weirdoes, be they punks, goths, ravers or rivetheads. Several highly polarizing media appearances have left him branded a "psycho" and "devil-worshipper", but those in mystic circles know of his status as an exorcist and paranormal expert. Those who know him personally tend not to believe the unsettling rumours, but this much is clear: Leonard Castellar has become a name that provokes controversy.
