Approximately 2 billion years ago, in a galaxy far from our own, an intelligent species achieved a unity of mind and purpose rarely seen in the universe. They set out across the stars to admire and understand the great beauty around them. In human terms they might be considered 'naturalists'. Wanting to see and study the natural state of the universe and especially the development of intelligent life in all it's forms and to watch for that spark of psychic unity that would parallel their own. For those billions of years, they spread from galaxy to Galaxy, studying and learning. Only in the most dire of circumstances did they ever intervene. Of course they met many other space faring races but continued their policy of non-interference even when faced with malevolent and destructive forces. It was all considered to be part of the natural process. In the verbal mode of speech, they called themselves Lukovians. Across the universe they had many other names,  one of the most common being, the Travelers

They themselves also continued to evolve and progress over these aeons. Approximately 100,000 years ago, the Lukovians had made it to the fringes of our galaxy and began setting up their standard observations posts. One of which was placed in the center of Earth's moon. The extremely sophisticated computerized observer was designated, Zoar. Each observer was directed by 9 core programs. The first was of course the prime directive, to observe and record all that occurred in the biosphere of the planet it observed. The second program was to designed to calculate the precise location and velocity of a single electron somewhere on the that planet and then extrapolate from that, all causal relationships from there, to as far as time and continued function allowed. The third program involved the correlation and transmission of all data to the Lukovian's network. The 3 initial programs were all that ran under normal circumstances. Programs 4 through 9 activated only if certain criteria were met. Approximately 4,000 years ago the Lukovians attained the ultimate unified state and were able to leave their corporeal bodies and ascend into the higher planes. In most galaxies that they inhabited, they had chosen a species close to their own mental and emotional temperament to be the inheritors of all that they left behind, in order to ensure it did not fall into the wrong hands. In the Milky Way Galaxy, they had not yet encountered a species ready for that level of technology and therefore when the ascension occurred, it activated the 4th program of the Observer Zoar, to begin a very careful and gradual acceleration of the human species, to eventually become their inheritors and hopefully their successors. The intervention was deemed acceptable since human evolution had already been tampered with. The success of this mission depended greatly on the accuracy of Zoar's second program in predicting the future. While all causal relationships on Earth had now been calculated, and extrapolated to account for all future motion out to the edge of the solar system, the Lukovians understood that those calculations could be disrupted by 2 things. Matter entering the sphere of extrapolation faster than light, and matter originating from an extra-dimensional source. The sudden, spontaneous interaction of electrons could not be calculated before hand, and therefore needed to be kept to a minimum. In time, the second program would eventually calculate causality out to the boundaries of the other calculators, at which time extra-terrestrial incursion would no longer be an issue. Extra-dimensional incursions however, would always be a threat and warranted their own entire program should those kinds of incursions be detected.

Zoar followed it's 4th program without fail. While it was endowed with certain remote energy and matter manipulation abilities, it eventually became necessary to have a real physical presence on Earth to help counter unexpected anomalies. Zoar's 2nd program revealed that this would entail a progression of aides over time but that ultimately it would be completely effective. The first assistant was a robot designated the Mechanically Adaptive Contingency Hybrid, or M.A.C.H for short. Though not intentionally designed to be sentient, M.A.C.H. did become free willed after an encounter with Mechanon and eventually was allowed to leave Earth in return for not interfering with the 4th program. The Lukovians had left several unfinished experiments behind in the labs of Zoar's installation after the ascension. One of these was a humanoid mechanical body designed to house the disembodied brain of a human being. Zoar decided to next use this as it's assistant after fitting it with a suitable brain. The ideal candidate was plucked from the battlefields of Korea and the result was the man who would later be known as Lord Xanadu. This man served Zoar for 30 years before he to found a reason to desert his post and escaped into deep space.

At this point, Zoar decided that a single perpetual assistant was not going to be practical and decided to employ human beings that would be augmented with suits of power armor when appropriate. Rather than laying all the responsibility on a single person, it would select 3 so that they would be able to lead relatively normal lives and stay invested in their fellow man.
