As I fly through the night sky towards my destination, I can't help but wonder. Who is Mister Shadow? Years ago it seemed so simple. He was a black market dealer who specialized in moving and fencing magical artifacts through Millennium City's underworld. I only learned about him because he was also a corporate saboteur. Break-ins and destruction of property tend to attract costumed attention like me. Eventually I caught up with him and learned firsthand about his metahuman powers. It's also where I got my distaste for ooze powers. As Shadow proved, it's really hard to catch someone who can slip through a crack the size of a pinhole. Even harder when they fight back.

After the Shadow Psion incident, he vanished without a trace. Part of me wished he would never return. I could have gone my whole life without having to think about what happened between us. But the incident gave him all of my memories so I can't run the risk of letting him go free. Not if he still knows everything I do. So now I'm chasing every lead I've got, no matter how weak it is. Just recently I got word that there have been sightings of a “walking silhouette” around here. Fits his description.

I start my descent into the streets of Westside...It's always Westside, isn't it? The derelict section is the perfect hideout for crooks of every variety. Including amorphous ones, apparently. Assuming Shadow's hideout is here, I just have to find it without being spotted. Then I could come back with reinforcements and finally lock him away...Although, in the back of my mind, I worry about what he'll tell the authorities once he's been caught. If he still has my memories, then he has all the leverage he needs to keep me out of his way. Or worse.

Looks like I missed a party here. The space around one of the old apartment buildings shows all the signs of a superpowered brawl. For some reason all the nearby hydrants are spewing water high in the air. The debris-littered area is completely soaked. That's odd. It doesn't look like the hydrants were hit. Looks more like the pressure caused them to burst open from the inside.

The sound of splintering wood turns my attention toward the old building just in time to see someone get launched through a window on the ground floor. I quickly catch them with my telekinesis before they sail into a lamppost. It's a woman. But not like any I've ever seen before. She's wearing golden armor with a green trim and her skin is covered in tiny silver scales. Her seaweed-green hair reaches down to her shoulders and webbed fins stick out of her forearms and legs. Clearly aquatic. This is the perfect time to mention that something fishy is going on here. Luckily that's not my style. What's she doing here? “Are you alright? What's going on?”

She turns her solid black eyes up to meet my gaze. “Thank you. I am okay. But you must let me go. I cannot let that shadow creature escape!” Sounds like she found Mister Shadow. But now that he knows this place has been compromised it'll take me weeks to find him again. Terrific. Her eyes dart between me and the old building as she floats in my telekinetic grasp. “My name is M'Aara. I must capture an unpure heart to weigh against the Feather of Ma'at. Please, you must believe me! Many lives hang in the balance!”

...I have no idea what she's talking about...But Shadow's here and I might not get another shot at him for a long time. I can't take him alone and backup is a long way away...So it's time for a team-up. “I don't know anything about pure hearts or feathers, but I do know that the “shadow creature” you found needs to be taken off the streets. So how about we do this together?” She nods to my question, so I let go of her. Despite such a short drop, she lands on her feet. Nice reflexes.

Krow's not going to be happy with me. He told me not to engage Shadow without backup. My last few encounters with Mister Shadow did not go well for me. I just hope M'Aara can pull her weight. Only one way to find out...
