Under Construction

Taiire is an Adkuui-tribe kobold hailing from the fantastic world of Kharlia. Her eager curiosity hurtles her into exciting discovery as often as it does into terrifying destruction.

Origin

The Underground

The Nursery

Taiire grew up in the communal hatchery of the subterranean city of Lakraduu. At the age of eight years, she was appraised by Vocational Advisor Raazt, as are all her peers by nursery standard. Per Taiire's promising brilliance (though pedantic), she was assigned to serve as an acolyte to the ruling priesthood: the Covenant of Adkuu'zat.

Taiire was thrilled to learn the lore of the great dragon. She dreamed of the chance to, one day, meet the mighty ghost -- the very same that the elders threatened to invoke to smite troublesome younglings.

This, however, was not Taiire's destiny, for Advisor Raazt partook of far too much scalepeel and jotted down the wrong room numbers on the assignment forms. Before Raazt could realize his mistake, the courier had delivered the orders, and soldiers were hauling off apprentices-to-be across the city.

The Workshop

The tradesfolk of Lakraduu enjoy specially-picked candidates for their new apprentices, best suited to their trade in question. However, some professions are stocked by merely a quota of fresh bodies. The soldier-caste is a prime example of this; yet there is one regarded with even less envy: the wayfinders.

The duty of the wayfinder is to ensure safe passage through the tunnels of the underground, that the soldiers and priests may move with haste and secrecy as needed.
This may be accomplished with the utmost care to avoid pitfalls, cave-ins, mashy spike-plates, flammable gas-jets, and wall-launched poison darts. Most often, however, bungling ahead and filling the chamber at the party's fore with a blood-curdling scream of agony will do to advise them which is the safest path.

Karaug, the tribe's foremost trapsmith, trains the wayfinders, manages them, houses them, and buries them (if he could find whatever's left). He grew more and more detached with each unfortunate soul sent to serve as fodder; yet as Taiire was unceremoniously dumped at his feet, he realized the priests had erred, and a grand opportunity lay before him.

Karaug assembled his most devious training course yet: spring-loaded with hidden hazards and piped with a distressing amount of lime-green ooze. He ordered Taiire through it every day (when she wasn't shooed off to perform errands elsewhere), and every time she would fail, Karaug threw her in again.
For this, Taiire hated her mentor for a long time; but as she began to learn clues as to the fate of the apprentices before her, she began to realize Karaug's intent to hone her into something that would survive the cruelties of the underground. Soon, she embraced her duty, and appreciated its value. The dreams of sorcerous studies in the temple fell far and faint, as she poured over sinister schematics and the complex runes of rival underfolk.
