"Passionate hate can give meaning and purpose to an empty life." - Eric Hoffer

Arlan Damaskinos is Spite and the name is not for show. He uses negative emotions - chief among them hatred, disdain, anger and spite - to fuel his power of telekinesis and shape it into psychic armor, weapons and servants to wreak havoc in his name and sate his lust for revenge and hatred for the world. Good thing he’s taking it out on the right people.

Appearance

Spite appears to be in his early to mid-20s. His build is athletic and he would be quite handsome if not for the constant look of boredom or mild disapproval on his face. He wears his black hair in a side-swept undercut, which he sometimes complements with streaks of garish colors (his favorite is a dark purple) or complicated patterns shaved into the short parts. He also has a snake bite piercing in his lower lip.

Spite does not care for the cape-and-tights look. His usual outfit is a gray leotard with a bullseye design on the back (“Take the shot asshole, I dare you!”), dark gray cargo pants and black leather boots and gloves. He carries a few useful pieces of equipment in a utility belt. He also has a long black scarf with a white trim which he sometimes wraps around his head like a hood. Sometimes he will complement his outfit with accessories like studded bracers, necklaces or rings.

Background

Arlan Damaskinos was the only child of Marek and Josephka Damaskinos, Slovenian expatriates who moved to the US just years before the battle of Detroit. As an architect, Marek’s talents were in high demand when it came to rebuild the city which would become Millennium City at some point. The family moved there and some of Arlan’s earliest memories are those of a devastated cityscape rife with despair and mourning.

While his childhood was uneventful, things took a darker turn in his teenage years. Maybe it was pure chance which made him the victim, maybe it was destiny, maybe something else; fact is, Arlan was subject to years upon years of bullying from not one bully but several of them. As to not appear weak in front of others - especially his parents and the few friends he had - Arlan kept quiet about it and instead focused all his fear and anger inwards. If he was just a bit more popular they would rather want to be his friends. If he was just a bit smarter he would be able to come up with good comebacks to their barbs. If he was just a bit stronger they would not dare mess with him.

At some points the bullies lost interest and moved on to other victims, but Arlan did not move on. He just hated them even more for continuing to go after those who couldn’t defend themselves and himself for not being better; at some point it became an obsession. However this also gave him willpower beyond anything. He pushed himself ever harder to reach his goals of becoming better in every aspect. By the time high school was over he was handsome, popular and top of his class. Those who bullied him and those who looked the other way suddenly wanted to be his friends. He still hated them.

In Arlan’s mind nothing had changed. They were still the bad guys and he still needed to become even better to show them all. In college alcohol and drugs came into the mix and drove him even deeper into hatred, self-hatred and aimless revenge phantasies against nobody in particular. He hid it all under a mask of playful arrogance and mild amusement, but inside his hatred grew on and on and drove him onwards and downwards at the same time. He graduated top of his course in journalism. He became a successful independent writer for several underground magazines and blogs, always trying to get back at society and those who used their power against others.

One night on his way home from another hate, alcohol and drug-fuelled night wandering through Millennium City’s bars, everything came to a breaking point when he saw a group of Maniacs harassing a group of girls. The hatred which had grown inside him for over a decade activated his latent psychic powers and broke out in a wave of dark purple energy. The energy formed into several dark shadowy figures which proceeded to tear into the group of Maniacs while Arlan just stood there watching with glee. Only the terrified screams of the girls stopped Arlan’s psychic servants from killing the criminals. Arlan ran when he could hear the police sirens.

The emergence of his powers were a revelation for Arlan. It took him a few weeks to fully figure out how they worked and what he should do now. It is probably for the best that in his own mind he still saw himself as a figure of justice, a champion of the underdogs, the outcasts and those who couldn’t defend themselves; otherwise a new supervillain would have been born that night. Instead that night Spite was born, a superhero by the virtue of going after the right people and nothing else.

Personality

Spite is an asshole. A deeply damaged, emotionally unstable and complex-riddled asshole, but an asshole nonetheless. All the years of hating the whole world and himself in particular have only been bearable for him by building a wall of arrogance, disdain and sarcasm around himself. Spite is condescending, impatient and sometimes just plain insufferable. While it is not that bad all the time, there are definitely more likable people around at any given time. On the inside it is even worse. All of the above is just a mask. Underneath he is a mess of inferiority complexes, revenge phantasies, self-hatred and disproportionate grudges against minor slights from years ago.

He is also the possibly worst person to have gained superpowers. He flaunts his superpowers at every occasion; for years he had felt powerless and inadequate and now he finally has the opportunity to show them all. While he has not killed anyone in his twisted crusade yet (and has no intention of doing so, seeing the bullies suffer amuses him more) he gleefully uses his powers to turn those he considers the bad guys into a mess of bruises, cuts and broken bones. The irony of him having become what he hated so much - a bully - is completely lost on him though. He is too convinced of his justice. The only reason law enforcement and other superheroes have turned a blind eye to Spite so far is that those Spite considers the bad guys actually are the bad guys.

Powers

  • Telekinesis: Unbeknownst to him, his parents or anybody else for that matter Arlan was born with latent but extremely powerful telekinetic abilities which just needed to right trigger to emerge. Said trigger was a decade of negative emotions festering inside of him, which also greatly shaped the form and source of his telekinesis. Spite’s powers are fuelled by negative emotions of those around him and his own, but his own emotions seem to have a greater influence than any others. While all negative emotions seem to be able to fuel his powers, the most effective seem to be hatred, anger, disdain and his namesake spite. He has also learned that cold, calculated hatred and arrogant disdain work better than blind rage. In battle he is not a raving berserker but creepily calm, often recounting past slights against him in his head or imagining elaborate revenge phantasies to strengthen and shape his powers. This concentrated negativity combined with the strong psychic powers make reading or otherwise manipulating Spite's mind very difficult at best and impossibly painful at worst of telepaths.

Unlike many other users of telekinesis, Spite’s powers are actually visible. They manifest as purple, shadowy shapes, figures and objects which do whatever he hopes to accomplish. Examples are:

• If he wants to throw, a car a brutish, shadowy shape will manifest next to the car, pick it up, throw it, then disappear

• If he wants to push an enemy back, another shadowy figure will manifest and tackle the enemy in the desired direction

• If he wants to move a pile of debris, a swarm of shadowy birds appear to carry the rubble away in their claws

• If he wants to protect himself or others from a large attack armored, shadowy giant appears and uses his body as a shield

• If he wants to lift himself into the air on a piece of debris, a winged, shadowy figure appears to carry it with him on top

• If he needs to protect just himself or conceal his identity, a set of shadowy armor appears around him to do just that

  • Utility Belt & Training: Due to the fact that his telekinesis are highly versatile and extremely powerful, Spite does not need much in the way of training and equipment. However he still carries a small utility belt which holds some equipment like a flashlight, zip-cuffs, a lockpick set, a small first aid kit and similar basics. He also carries a SW1911 hidden in a leg holster, just in case. Spite is a decent enough shot and has also some Muay Thai experience.

Weaknesses

  • What a show-off!: While he can turn them off completely, Spite is unable to turn off the visual aspect of his powers. Even if he just wants to open a door with them, a shadow will appear to turn the doorknob. Stealth is almost completely impossible for Spite.
  • Going to my unhappy place...: For his powers to work properly Spite or his environment need to be full of negative emotions. While the battlefield is normally not an overly happy place, if the battle goes too well, Spite actually needs to force himself to think negatively as to not slip up, which can be used against him.
  • Not the squishy parts!: For some reason Spite is completely unable to directly manipulate the inner workings of living beings with his powers, maybe due to a subconscious need to visualize his shadows actually doing the deed. No ripping organs apart or bursting blood vessels in brains!
