VParaStart.pngal Loren was born to a normal family in an abnormal place: A dimension parallel to our own.

Growing up, Val was no different than any other child. He lived an a city, a utopia, that seemed like a shining beacon in the downtrodden world that made up his home dimension. This city was one of the last refuges for humans in a world taken over by creatures not of this (or that) world. While the world beyond the walls of his home seemed bleak and hopeless, the city within was a bustling area of human activity. The city ran like any other, children played, adults worked. Of course, some people weren't so content. There were street gangs, and those who liked to stir up trouble, but they were usually taken care of pretty quickly when the authorities showed up.

But, soon, the portals started to open. Though, not anywhere specific, portals would open and close randomly; within the city and outside of it. It was unclear if something was trying to get into the city or not, but every time a portal opened, it would remain for a moment before closing and vanishing. Nothing ever went through, and nothing ever came through. At least, not until a portal opened up near Val.

A few days after Val's 18th birthday, it happened. He had been walking home along one of the city walls. People kept away from the walls, they didn't want to be so close to the outside. Val didn't mind, however. It was always fast and easy to get around without crowds. And he had always wondered what was beyond them. It was something they didn't talk about, at least, not to the kids. He was once again wondering what these walls kept out when it happened. A portal. It had opened up directly in front of him. He didn't know what to make of it at first. A shimmering ball of blue energy with a ring around it. It seemed to disrupt the light passing through, or... it was showing light that wasn't originating from his area. He couldn't tell. But he did know that he was curious. Very curious. What if it led outside of the walls? Should he try passing through? What if it closed behind him? He wasn't really sure what to do, but he did know it was going to close any second. It's what he had heard; they never stayed open for long.

He was about to turn and walk away from it when he heard something. A low, but very loud sound. A rumbling, moaning sound. It was unlike anything he had ever heard before. It sounded like some kind of animal, but massive. It seemed like it had come from beyond the wall. There was no way to see over the wall as it was easily fifty meters tall, but Val didn't need to wonder for long. It happened so fast that he can barely even remember what had happened, much less what it was. It looked like some kind of tentacle, but, big. VeryBigPB.png. Big enough to see looming above the wall. It swung around before slamming into the sonic barrier that protected the wall.

Val, panicked, had no idea what to do. He had never seen anything like this before. His heart felt like it was going to leap right out of his chest. Looking around for any escape, he realized the portal next to him was still open, but for how long? Would he be able to run away before this... ThingPB.png broke through the wall? He didn't know how his legs started moving, he was still in a stupor. But they were taking him towards the portal! He tried to stop himself, but his momentum was already in full force. He flung through the portal before he knew what was happening.

It took a moment for him to orient himself. It felt as if he had walked through a door, but the floor was at his side. Gravity quickly righted his wrong and flung him at the new ground. His head was spinning. Where was he? After a moment he heard a voice. "Who is that?" Followed by another. "I don't know. He came from the portal!" "That isn't possible. That planet is un--" Val looked up at the men around him dressed in white coats. "Who are you? Where am I?" He blurted out.

As it turns out, Harmon Industries had been experimenting with their new-found portal technology, unaware that they were opening portals to another dimension that was inhabited. They believed that the planet they were experimenting with had no life. Val had to explain to them that his world was different. Most people only lived in the one city.

They had tried to send him back, but something wasn't working. The portals broke down every time he attempted to enter one. His physiology had changed when he went through the portal, and it was preventing him from traveling back. But of course, this came with a few unexpected side effects...

VParaStart.pngal's new physiology has given him a small assortment of super powers. Val's powers come from a slight mutation that causes his skin to absorb ambient radiation in the atmosphere. This has a few different effects:

Invulnerability: Val is almost impervious to physical damage. His bones are enhanced to the point of being stronger than questionite. His skin is durable enough to withstand direct attacks by knives, bullets, fire, and any number of other physical methods of bodily harm.

Super Strength: Val's muscles have a similar level of enhancement to that of his skin and bones. While he is physically lean, his muscles, while tense, can become as strong as steel, giving him great proportional strength. He can lift approximately ten metric tons.

Energy Generation: Val's skin converts excess absorbed radiation into a form of energy that he can manipulate. It is largely harmless, biologically. However, he can use it to create short-range concussive blasts, shields, and at times, additional physical protection. Val can even use this energy to unnaturally boost his body's ability to heal itself.

Flight: Val's energy manipulation allows him to coat his body in a fine film of energy, which he can then lift to simulate controlled flight. He can sustain this form of flight for as long as he has a reserve of energy; typically two hours without rest.

Speed: Val's energy manipulation, in conjunction with his enhanced muscles, also allows him a form of simulated super speed. While his reaction times are still those of a normal human, he can coat his body in a thick form of energy and couple that with his powerful muscles to run much faster than a standard human could. This is, however, much more taxing than flight, and as such, he can only do this in short bursts.

Vulnerability to Physical Forces: Val's enhanced body, while incredibly durable, can only handle so much abuse. A strong enough physical attack has the potential to harm him, if only superficially.

Vulnerability to Radiation: Val's Body is able to absorb radiation, but an overload of radiation will temporarily leave him disabled. While not fatal as it would be to a normal human, it will leave Val nauseated and disoriented for a time while his body attempts to convert the radiation into excess energy which he can then burn off.

Vulnerability to Non-Physical Forces: Val's body is very resistant to physical attack, however, he is still vulnerable to non-natural forces such as energy attacks. While something like fire may not harm his skin, the heat it raises his body temperature to will eventually cause him harm, likewise with cold or ice. Electricity or a non-concussive energy force will generally leave him harmed, but is unlikely to irreparably damage his internal organs without extreme effort.

Vulnerability to Magic: Val has no resistance to chaotic magical attacks. A magical attack that is used as a physical or concussive attack will have little affect on Val. However, a magical attack that is designed to inflict pure mental, manipulative, or generally chaotic damage is something that Val has no power to resist.

Vulnerability to Mental Attacks: Val has no ability or training to resist mental attacks, and as such, has to rely on speed and action to prevent someone from exploiting this weakness.

VParaStart.pngal's costume, while revealing, has a specific purpose. His skin needs to be uncovered in order to efficiently absorb ambient radiation. Similarly to a flower using photosynthesis, Val's skin will begin to 'suffocate' without the ability to directly absorb radiation. While it is not fatal to cover himself up, it will leave him at a disadvantage with his powers, specifically, his energy generation. It will begin to drain like a battery with no ability to recharge.

Val also makes use of a Hazard Suit for situations were oxygen is in short supply. Val's powerful lungs allow him to hold his breath for a maximum of thirty minutes before he requires another breath. It is in these foreseen situations when Val dons a suit designed for him by Harmon Industries. This allows him to travel into space for short periods, as well as underwater. It can also provide limited protection from radiation, allowing Val to prevent an overload of absorbed radiation. This also means that Val is incapable of absorbing any ambient radiation, forcing him to rely on the reserves he has accumulated and, after that, only his strength and durability.

PBNotes.png

Power Boy started as a concept to flip gender stereotypes, specifically, Power Girl's revealing clothing. It began as an experiment to see how people would react to him, but quickly turned into a source of entertainment as people generally accepted him while making various jokes about his appearance.

He is an homage to three heroes of popular brands: His costume is an homage (or parody) to Power Girl. His powers are an homage to Ms. Marvel. And his personality is an homage to Superboy.
