Phasechange is an extremely powerful mutant human who wields versatile temperature manipulation powers. Before gaining her current abilities, she was an ice-projector by the name of Frostbite, who operated in the Bronx area of New York City. Having since been operated upon by VIPER, her days as a hero have been left long in the past.

Currently, she's working with Captain Radius and the rest of the Gamma Squad in order to make a living and gain access to vital hypomutagens that prevent her malignant powers from further developing.

Origin

The Rise and Fall of Frostbite

Born to working class parents deep in urban New York, Gina Lafayette's young life was not a particularly opportunity-heavy one. A combination of low funds and bad grades meant that Gina dropped out of Junior High when she was 15 years old. Oddly enough, though, she managed to do quite well on her drivers tests, and she soon managed to make an independent living as a bus driver by the age of 30.

On a warm day in July, Gina had been preparing for her shift, when she suddenly felt sick; as if she had just been hit by a flu. Her skin began to shift color slowly as chills ran down her spine. Still, she was determined to do her rounds that day and get her paycheck. Finally, around noon, she realized something was definitely wrong when she sneezed on her bus' dashboard and froze the entire panel flat. Only quick thinking with the brakes managed to save her bus from careening into an intersection, but she had consequentially made a huge traffic jam with this unusual development. Because she had failed to get her passengers to their stops on time, as well as somehow irrevocably damaged her bus, she was promptly fired. On the plus side, however, Gina was quickly recovering from her ailment, physically beginning to feel much better. Her once latent mutant powers had now fully developed, and with the newly-gained free time of unemployment, she proceeded to train her ability.

Her first shot at fame came when the Brooklyn Bridge closed down in August due to sustaining heat stress. Though more of an inconvenience than a true crisis, it certainly had a large enough impact for it to become city-wide news. Gina, not wasting any time, biked over to the bridge and, in a display of both great power and control, used a light drizzle of frost to slowly cool the metalwork of the bridge until it had stabilized at a safe temperature. Despite the disbelief of the construction workers, they were soon able to verify the bridge's structural integrity and the traffic reopened after only an hour of downtime. When news reporters held a short interview with her following the bridge's repair, she was prompted to come up with her first superhero name: Frostbite.

Frostbite, Circa 2003
Frostbite's superhero stint was more a case of extended public service, especially during the summertime, where her ability to generate breezy conditions in concentrated areas was highly valued. Still, her ability to control her ice powers was developing very well, and in private, she was developing techniques to weaponize her power in non-lethal ways, including rooting her foes to the ground, creating slippery patches, and even encasing targets in a thin, rigid sheet of ice. Late august, during the hottest days of the year, she began to put these skills to use during a crime apex in the city.

Though her efforts were appreciated during the summer months, she was not making enough money to break even. In addition, her clear superhero persona made it very difficult for the ice-imbued mutant to find any work, especially given her apparent lack of actual job experience or education. By mid-October, she had been evicted from her apartment. Moving back in with her parents, Frostbite still attempted to persist with her superheroics, but with the weather getting colder, her powers began to lose their notoriety and effectiveness.

The winter apparently didn't meld well with Gina's abilities at all; her flu-like symptoms were beginning to return, causing her to partially lose control of her powers. She was beginning to become an unintentional threat, with temperatures around her dropping by as much as 20 degrees Fahrenheit. At the behest of her parents, Gina was sent off to see a doctor - not only to treat the sickness symptoms, but to perhaps even attempt to remove her powers and get a shot at a normal job.

Gina's doctor was no expert in Mutant genetics, but he did know some colleagues who did have considerable talent in such a field. Dr. Manfred Klaus, an ambitious scientist in London, Ontario, was one such colleague. After hearing about Gina's symptoms and abilities, and how they had been used during the summer in New York, his interest was immediately piqued, and he gladly paid for Gina's plane tickets to fly her over to his labs.

A snake's bite

Dr. Klaus had long been a skilled biologist for the ranks of VIPER. Of course, his impressive credentials and legitimate applications of his study in cardiovascular research served to overshadow this darker side to his occupation. Gina most certainly believed she could trust the man; he seemed he was willing to help and neutralize her symptoms and freakish abilities. Klaus, however, had much different goals in mind. There was no illness to treat; all he saw was the template for an incredible mutant warrior.

Closely examining her physiology, temperature, and abilities, Klaus came to the conclusion that he would be able to modify not only the amplitude of Gina's powers, but he could also unlock another latent ability stowed away in her mutant genes: the ability to generate heat. Gina was much more concerned with her unusual "mutant illness", and she felt a deep need to try and get rid of her powers and start a normal life. Klaus, however, appealing to the fame and versatility it could provide, managed to sweet-talk her into agreeing to unlock the full scope of her heat abilities.

Over several weeks, Klaus' assistants kept Gina strapped into a gurney, feeding various mutagens into her body and consequentially severely altering her genetic code. A hellish operation later, and Gina was released, her muscles and veins boiling under her skin. Releasing blazing flames was no problem for the altered mutant, but the operation came with quite a few more caveats. Gina's unstable genetics meant that, though her physical attributes had been immensely boosted, her tensing muscles and rapidly developing tissues meant that her body was quickly destroying itself. Constantly locked in pain, all she could bring herself to do in response to the operation was seek out any scientists she could find and blast them to ashes for turning her into this monster.

Klaus, quickly catching wind that his colleagues were getting slaughtered, called the local police force to try and subdue Gina. The mutant, not being able to make much leeway on account of the fact her legs were locking up, quickly became surrounded by armed cops. Not that it proved to be much of a roadblock, though, as an immense discharge of both great heat and cold vaporized everyone in the vicinity - including Dr. Klaus. For now, the pain had subsided, but she was now quite evidently a murderer. She would have to make her way out of the city as quickly as possible, and assume some sort of disguise. Hitchhiking her way back into the US, she soon managed to make it into Roosevelt City. Thankfully, her encounter in Klaus' labs didn't leave any surviving witnesses, but she was not so content to let her guard down. Vowing to conceal her mutating face, she proceeded to put her immense powers to use in Roosevelt City as Phasechange. She soon became infamous as one of the most powerful vigilantes in the metropolitan area.

A hero again

The car shot first.
In her 8 years as a vigilante, Phasechange never once managed to get bested or captured by any city-sanctioned hero groups or enforcers. Day by day, though, she felt more and more pain, and she felt herself lose control of some of her powers. The mutations were becoming so severe, that there were periods where she would generate temperatures too extreme for any human to survive, coupled with periods where she would be completely unable to fight at all. This, all combined with constant aches, chills, and hot spells, served to make the vigilante's existence a constant struggle. Her lack of income and shelter were certainly not helping, either.

It was not all bad, however. During some of Phasechange's battles, she had been joined by another superhero known as Judge Fist, who, at the time, was an up-and-coming superhuman brawler. Though seemingly blind to Phasechange's difficulties, he had a sincere respect for her efforts at superheroism, as well as her immense power. The two managed to maintain friendly terms for several years, eventually growing to become close partners in their work.

It was one night in winter 2010 that something had changed with Judge Fist. Indeed, an epiphany on his end - as well as some complications with his involvement with Roosevelt City power works, turned him into the radioactive Captain Radius. Only after having been irrevocably mutated, as well as having had extended contact and communication with Quarterlife, did he begin to understand what Phasechange had been going through. He flew over to Avons Park, where he had always met the thermal vigilante, only to find her still and cold under a heavy coating of frost. Most other people probably would have been too uncomfortable to act, but in a spontaneous act of kindness (out of several he has shown), Radius took Phasechange back to his home and had her admitted to the Baxter MutaCo. labs. There, Phasechange's conditions were closely monitored and she was eventually prescribed hypomutagenic drugs to keep both her powers and troubling physical symptoms in check. Having been shown such spontaneous mercy from Captain Radius, Phasechange soon became romantically involved with him.

To this day, Phasechange continues using her powers. Only, having been treated by Captain Radius, she no longer has to worry about any troubling mutant symptoms. She now works under Captain Radius' wing as one of the members of the Gamma Squad, and is no longer a wanted criminal by the City's standards. In any case, having since been treated for her conditions, she has opened up to the outside world and has managed to make her origins and degree of superheroic experience much more apparent.

Not naturally very organized, nor that inquisitive, Phasechange can seem somewhat disinterested or conservative at times. In truth, though, this is more because of her tendency to try and deduce answers instead of ask for them straightforward. She can seem rather cruel to most people, but this is a facade she only shows towards people she doesn't trust. Her innate opinion of most people gears her to believe that they, like many others she has met in the past, will only attempt to fight or harm her. Being conversely very warm and caring about those she is close to, she ultimately is a very defensive and cautious person.

She is simultaneously a pessimist and a problem-solver. She seems to have a natural talent for somehow just starkly pointing out any flaws in plans she might spot, and is always the first to be the devil's advocate. In a team situation (and especially with the Gamma Squad and Captain Radius), this makes her an extremely valuable tactical asset, even discounting her monstrous combat capabilities.

Combat Specs

Wielding the power of the entire spectrum of physical temperatures, there's not many foes that can stand up to Phasechange's onslaught.
Phasechange's physical capabilities have been sizeably boosted by Klaus' mutations. She can lift upwards of 1200 pounds, and can sprint speeds of up to 28 miles per hour. She does have impressive cardiovascular endurance as well, but her muscles are extremely vulnerable to strain. Extended exertion of her capabilities in such ways can easily cause sprains and other related injuries to occur.

Thus, even despite her sizable strength and decent combat skill, she prefers to use her Ice and Fire Manipulation to win her battles. Her Ice powers are the ones that largely take precedence; she can finely direct sharpened shards of chilled air at enemies, and can send powerful reverberations through frozen fluids to shatter them in hazardous explosions. On the flipside, her fire abilities are much more valuable for controlling crowds, preventing their advance and cornering them as she freezes them where they stand. The fact she can apply such extreme temperature ranges in such fine areas of effect can easily be fatal to most targets; enemies who are made out of steel or other typically armored materials are at extreme risk against Phasechange.

To match her abilities, Phasechange's mutations have granted her a degree of Temperature Resistance and Absorption. At face value, she is indeed a lot more resistant to extreme temperatures than most average fighters, but it does come with caveats. Phasechange, for one, cannot control how her resistance works; at times, she might be able to withstand only high temperatures, while at others, only low ones. At any given moment, she can suddenly become vulnerable to her own powers. This side-effect was partially due to shifting biological traits in her body, which have mostly come to pass thanks to her Hypomutagenic suit. The suit, along with other hypomutagenic supplements, help keep her genetic material stable, thus preventing any dangerous power shifts or tissue growth from occurring. She can easily persist without the suit simply by manually taking supplements, but if left without these methods, her powers will wildly fluctuate, causing extreme damage to everything around her and sometimes even herself.

ETC

  • So far, all her ice attacks originate from her right hand, while all her fire attacks come from her left.
  • By complete accident, she happens to have the same eye color and general skintone as The Secretary.
  • Dr. Klaus dies in this origin story. So, in rough canonical terms, this means that Phasechange is actually the reason why Redstone shows up to replace him in the mission line involving electric eel soldiers, clearly because the weird scarf ninja is a suitable substitute for a questionably insane geneticist.
