Background and History
Origins
No one in Nick's family has any super powers dating back to as far as the records could be found. Out of respect for Nick's wishes, his parents names, and his original name have been redacted. Nevertheless, both his parents, his sibling, and his nieces and nephews are still alive. Nick simply does not wish to associate them with his hero career in any way. Nick claims his childhood origins were simple, but happy. He grew up in Los Angeles, but his family has long since relocated.
Nick's Death
When Nick was 14 years old, he had an extremely vivid dream depicting his death. In conjunction with this dream he developed his powers of clairvoyance, immortality, and an eidetic recollection of the dream itself. Nick was adamant to his parents that the dream depicted his future, but they remained skeptical. Weeks later, after accurately predicting several world events, his family began to take notice of his powers. At their encouragement, he began to anonymously assist in preventing crimes and murders by reporting them to the police prior.
Early Hero Years
As soon as Nick was old enough to be considered an adult, he tearfully bid goodbye to his family, with the promise that he would use his abilities to help people. Naturally, this did not happen immediately, and Nick looked for an easy way out. He repeatedly entered lotteries, gambled, and placed bets on races, and always won. After winning four consecutive multi-million dollar lotteries in the course of a single year, Nick became a nationwide sensation. While he continued to look out for people by informing authorities about the future, his self-interest led to the exposure of his abilities.
First Capture by VIPER
VIPER was only the first of several groups to capture Nick, and it was there that he learned of his other ability. VIPER subjected Nick to torture to extract information about lottery numbers, horse races, and other means to make money. And when he was no longer an immediate asset, he was immediately shot. Despite the execution commencing, Nick would not die, nor he experience severe harm. If they attempted to shoot him, their guns would jam and explode, or the bullets would miss. Sometimes they'd hit but bounce off harmlessly. Other methods of euthanization were attempted including fire, drowning, electrocution, and even being crushed by Ripper. No matter what VIPER tried, Nick would not die. Eventually the base was attacked by a superhero, and Nick was rescued.
Modern History
Taking Up the Blades
Nick's capture made him realize just how set in stone his fate was. No matter what VIPER did to him, Nick's dream never changed, and he could recall every tiny detail. No matter what he did in the world, his body was being kept intact enough to fulfill the vision to perfection. Despite several unfortunate suicide attempts, Nick could clearly see himself, in a century from the dream's origin, as a young man dying from a stab wound. The weapon used for his murder appeared to be a personal possession. It was a knife made of a very rare, durable, and expensive metal known as questionite. Seeing his fate played out, Nick rose to meet it, and used his further lottery winnings to custom purchase the weapons.
The Stryker Incident
After taking to crime fighting in various places around the world, Nick was involved in a very dubious scenario. Though Nick had been frequently imprisoned during his hero work, villain groups had never gained enough leverage to successfully exploit his power. Despite his attempts to hide his history, VIPER apparently discovered the names and locations of his family. When threatened with their torture and demise, Nick was forced to collaborate with VIPER on several schemes, using his foresight to ensure repeated success. This led to the acquisition and deployment of several Stryker Missles that caused billions in collateral damage, killed seven superheroes, and hundreds of civilians. Nick was again rescued, but during his debrief, was informed that his family's cover had remained secure throughout the incident.
Nick maintained strongly that he had adequately confirmed that his family were indeed being held hostage, but no evidence ever surfaced to support his claim. People began to believe that Nick had actively and willingly collaborated with VIPER, and his reputation was considerably sullied. Numerous heroes, usually friends of those who died, became very upset with Nick's exoneration, and continued to propagate rumors that led to a decline in his repuation.
Current Operations
A decade after the Stryker incident Nick finally settled in Millenium City, and has been fighting crime there for the past seven years. He serves as a consultant to several major businesses, using his powers to predict market trends, for a sizable fee. Though he remains proud of his powers, he rarely reveals the future to anyone, unless it could save numerous lives. He lives alone in an expensive apartment, fighting gangs as a hobby, and more fervently dedicating himself to understanding and averting his looming demise.
Personality
Nick is cheerful and polite, and prone to flirtatious comments. He is easily approachable, but prefers a quiet place to watch people being people. He can sometimes be boastful, and likes to tease people about spoilers, or give fake hints to keep them on their toes. Despite his swagger, he is deeply troubled, and forever haunted by his fate. He is often confrontational when people mention his family, and does not take things in stride.
General Perception
Most people know Nick as the guy who won the lottery 17 times. What they don't know, is that only six of those wins were for personal gains, and the rest were dispersed to others. While most heroes are apathetic towards him, every now and then one remembers, or has heard about, his association with VIPER. Villainous individuals are usually very quick to exploit his powers, and if paid, he will sometimes assist them. He is not well loved by some people, but he maintains that no matter what he does, the future is always bright.
