There are times when the law fails us.
When the system lets the wicked walk free and allows the powerful to become corrupt.
There are times when somebody must work outside of the law to bring justice to the evil of the world...
That's where I come in.

Masquerade watching over the city

Brian grew up loving two things, the theater and doing the right thing. And coming from a large family of cops, it was no surprise when he applied at the police academy when he was old enough and eventually joined the NYPD, walking a beat, at the age of 21. It wasn't long before Brian had moved himself up to making detective by the time he was 23, passing the detective's exam with perfect scores. He had a knack for detail, always finding the right clues to get him one of the highest conviction rates in his precinct. He was good at his job and he loved every minute of it.

It wasn't long though, before he encountered flaws in the justice system. One day, Brian had brought in a violent killer who had brutally murdered 5 women in one night. The physical evidence was overwhelming and Det. Wylde had him dead to rights. But his lawyer had all the charges thrown out due to a technicality in the paper work. This shook Brian's faith in his job and our system. He could not believe a monster like that could walk free over something that seemed so menial.

Time went by and it seemed Det. Wylde was back on his conviction streak, until a similar situation occurred. Another technicality, another free criminal. His friends and his partner all told him not to worry about it so much. The system isn't perfect, it happens. Brian refused to believe this was the truth, that this was the best it was ever going to get. He grew more and more frustrated until one day he caught a break with his other passion. Somebody wanted to pick up the script to a play he had written.

So he jumped at the chance to pursue his other passion. And he became very successful at it, writing and directing several popular plays. He's no millionaire, but he does pretty well.

A few years went by and things were going pretty well. Until one day, Brian received a strange package in the mail from his former partner. Inside was a key and a note. "Brian, I'm in trouble. I think I stumbled onto something. This key is for a storage locker at the main bus terminal in Hudson City. You will find my evidence there. -John" Brian didn't know what his old friend got himself into, but he did the only thing he could do and headed on out to Hudson City to see what he could dig up.

His first stop was John's apartment, which was in shambles. There was no sign of his friend, but somebody had been there looking for something. Brian's next stop was the bus terminal. He found the locker and stuffed inside was a duffel bag. After taking it back to his hotel, Brian started to look through the contents. It was filled with surveillance photos, police officer files, bank statements, etc. It seems John stumbled upon a major ring of corrupt cops and politicians dealing in heavy drugs.

Piled in all the evidence, Brian found something about a major "deal" in Millennium City. He was sure that's where he will find his friend. But he knew he couldn't go investigating something this big as Brian Wylde. Too many of the corrupt officers knew him. So, he called up his agent and told him that they were taking his newest show to MC. Once Brian arrived, he raided some of the old costume bins and grabbed a plain white and some other random costume pieces. Dubbing himself Masquerade, he set out on the city to find his dear friend and stop the corruption in an already corrupt system.

  • Dual Extendable Batons - Developed by Barry Industries, these compact and lightweight batons are extremely durable. They utilize a gyroscopic system to increase impact power beyond human conditions while maintaining their relatively low weight.
  • Thrown Weapons - Masquerade utilizes varied boomerang styled thrown weapons when a situation requires him to maintain some distance in a fight.
  • Glock 19s - Masquerade's preferred duty weapon when he was a detective was the compact 9mm Glock 19. He now carries a pair of them should the need arise.
  • Masks - Masquerade started out his vigilante career wearing a simple white theatrical mask. This has since been upgraded by Barry Industries to include a detailed HUD and enhanced night vision. He also has a collection of other masks for different situations.
  • Costume - Most of Masquerade's costume is fairly simple. He wears a pair of SWAT tactical boots and tactical style pants with lightweight body armor under a simple shirt. Over that is his utility belt, which houses varied gadgets including a grapple gun for getting around.
  • BackStage - An information database and hacking system developed by his sister Maggie and integrated into his upgraded masks.

Physical characteristics

Masq2.png
Brian is an ordinary man with no actual super powers. He does however possess an eye for detail and an inquisitive mind, making him an exceptional detective. He is also trained in several forms of combat and weaponry, and works out daily to keep himself in shape. He is athletically built, weighing in at about 175lbs while standing at an average 5'10". Many would say he is ruggedly handsome. He has perfect 20/20 vision and no health issues.

Personality

Brian tends to put on a show of himself when faced with the public, appearing overly theatrical and witty. He is, in fact, incredibly cynical and often distrustful of others. Due, in no small part, to having put many of his most trusted friends behind bars for corruption. Though his bitterness towards the judicial system is apparent and often acts in a very morally gray area to hunt down bad men, he still believes there can be order and justice in the world.

Super Group

A short while after arriving in Millennium City, Masquerade encountered Eugene Barry (aka Rugby the Gun-toting Rhino) who, not only helped him develop some new crime fighting gear but, persuaded him to join the Super Serious Brooding Vigilantes. Although a lot less "serious" as their name would suggest, Masquerade accepted the offer of becoming co leader, providing a more structured and tactical side of leadership to Rugby's seemingly haphazard and gung-ho approach. He's the oddball in a group of...well, oddballs.

Nemesis

The Scream Fielder
Stage Fright - A sociopathic serial killer who likes to kill based on popular monster myth. The hunt for this maniac started during Brian's cop days, but is now getting much closer to stopping him as Masquerade.
