"I'm not blinded by science, mate. Science is like the drinking buddy who always gets me into trouble.” '

Scientist and dilettante superhero who wears a gravitic powered battlesuit. A part-time member of the Sentinel Squadron.

Out of Game Origins: Gravitas is largely played out of a desire to play a battlesuit character who isn't an Iron Man clone or inspired by mecha anime/manga.

History

"History belongs to magic and superstition, and the occultists are welcome to their dank reliqueries. The future belongs to the scientist. While Destroyer sits alone at the apogee, there are those beneath my orbit who will make an impact on the coming age." -- Albert Zerstoiten '

Origins

Gravitas is Dr. Callum Laird, specialist in gravitic studies. Born in Mumbai India, Dr. Laird's family originally came from London and worked at the British Consulate. His childhood mostly consisted of globetrotting with his parents, but he developed a keen interest in science. From his mother, he picked up his Buddhist beliefs.

Callum's first encounter with superhumans came at the age of 5, when he encountered the superhero Baladeva. The man was so powerful, but when he sacrificed his life two years later while battling a renegade Indian general, it devastated young Callum, who didn't believe superheroes could die. "That's as it should be," his mother said. "Nobody lives forever, and heroes are supposed to make an impact."

His dad wanted him to go into medicine, but physical sciences held a stronger attraction. As long as he could remember, he was interested in rocketry, and launched a fleet of model rockets when he was five. Discovering his brain was wired for math, he outpaced even his most predigious classmates, and badgered his parents into getting him a tutor who could challenge him. PHe developed a keen interest, especially in the Gadroon and their very mysterious technology. Callum was never a nerd: a gifted athlete as well as a top flight intellect, Callum enjoyed cricket and rugby (though football, American or otherwise, was never to his taste).

Callum spent most of his teen years in England, to which his parents returned when he was 15, after postings in Nigeria and Afghanistan. He found himself not fitting in with the crowd, but after awhile, bullies learned to leave him alone. At 19, he enrolled in MIT, achieveing his doctorate in an impressively short span of time. At MIT, Callum finally got to examine Gadroon technology, and while it remained a mystery to him (as to everyone else) it did prompt his own theories: his doctorate thesis is considered a must-read in the burgeoning field of gravitic science. He received job offers from numerous places, but Craig Carson was starting a gravitics research division and offered to start Callum at the top, and that seemed like the best offer -- as a superhero, Thundrax would have access to technology most firms could ever dream of.

In Spring 2010, Gravitas, inspired by all the superheroes he'd ever known, designed his own battlesuit. He never really intended to do more than use it to test his pet theories.

The Serpent's Court

Callum was involved in a June 15, 2010 incident when VIPER's Serpent Court and Viperia attacked the launch of a Flux-Carson satellite in Florida, murdered 18 NASA technicians and put Thundrax in a coma before they were rescued by UNITY. Realizing he could do more, Callum trained himself to (what was for him) peak athletic condition). It was then that he decided he would be more than just a dabbler in the superhuman world. He, like Baladeva, would make an impact.

The Squadron

By June 2011, Gravitas felt he was ready to become a real superhero. At Thundrax's recommendation, he applied to join the Sentinel Squadron, Adversary's group of superheroes. He is currently serving as a provisional member while assisting UNTIL on Monster Island.

Enemies

"Oh Callum love, I may be a woman, but you are *so* my bitch." -- Hubris '

Hubris

Calum's arch-enemy is Allandra Montgomery, his former girlffriend, a fellow MIT physics student. Seeking a collaboration with him, Allandra dated him, and despite a rocky relationship, Callum eventually proposed mariage. During the course of their engagement, Melanie learned of his project and his superhuman identity and on their wedding day, she left him at the altar and raided his computer, stealing the secrets of the Gravitas armor. Now as the supervillain Hubris, she enjoys tormenting him while she pursues her dream of running a criminal empire. "Damn hormones. Dating the blody Glenn Close/Fatal Attraction of Crime was probably the biggest mistake of my life." Callum has been known to say on more than one occasion.

Franklin Stone

One of the most lucrative job offers that Gravitas received was from Franklin Stone, head of ACI. While hardly at the top of Stone's list, no one turns down an offer from the great Franklin Stone without consequences. No one.

Personality

Easy going and fun-loving, Callum appears at first glance to be the opposite of the typical nerd, at least until he gets into his lab. Callum's known for his tendency to mock opponents, particularly those he sees as greedy, short-sighted, and psychotic (he has no time *at all* for most vigilantes).

Fun Facts

Gravitas hates Club Caprice. While adventurous, the first time he entered he thought that a portal to Hell had opened, and left before he could be sucked in.
