#5474: The Great Ship
<TFC logo here>
Name: Ernasot (The Savior)
Ship look: here
Propulsion: 3 stage ion drives (Collection, Processing and Ejection. Works like a giant gauss gun, accelerating hydrogen collected to provide thurst.)
Power generation: 6 nuclear reactors along with solar panels along the edges of the hull.
Cryo systems: 500 000 cryo pods with independent refrigeration units.
Armor: 25 meters thick titanium alloy plates covering the hull.
Weapons: 1500 heavy machine gun turrets, 1000 heavy artillery turrets, 1000 AA missile launchers 200 cruise missile silos armed with nuclear weapons and finally 500 Fighter craft with variable armament. 150 Dropships for moving equipment and settlers down to the new planet.
Cargo: Equipment needed to start a new colony, various ground vehicles, weapons and tools.
The ship itself is extremely durable and relies on its large number of machine guns to protect it against incoming projectiles it is however not equipped to deal with energy weapons. The much heavier artillery cannons are used along with missiles and fighters as offensive weapons, as the guns/missiles number in the thousands it has incredibly heavy firepower when fully armed. Due to the extreme weight and the relatively low powered engines Ernasot will require several hours to turn around, weeks to get up to its full speed, measuring at 10% of the speed of light.
Their entire world helped build this ship as fast as possible and in just 2 years it was built, an enormous ship, over 8 km long, it joined with the armor plates in space as they would be too heavy to allow the ship to lift off. It would become one of the largest structures ever built by the Nexans.
Even before it was launched it had become legend among the Nexans but only the ones working on it knew where it was being built, or if it was real in the first place.
Ernasot is currently undergoing a refit, 2500mm auto-cannons will be added along with a limited warp drive to allow the ship to move quickly around the solar system. It is also getting a structure repair system to be able to repair itself over time.
Update:
The refit is completed and cryogenic ammunition has been loaded due to the recent threat from the Margan fleet.
#5475: Biology
<TFC logo here>
General information:
Nexan lifespan averages at around 150 years, oldest recorded Nexan reached 203 years.
There are no records of any overweight Nexan ever existing, leading to the conclusion that their bodies most likely have some form of cutoff on stored energy, as they would not be able to fly if they got too heavy.
Physiology:
The most obvious traits include wings, tail and a lizard like appearance. However despite their appearance they are warm blooded, but it is believed they were once cold blooded thus allowing them to stay active even if their metabolism can't keep their temperature up. They have also at some point evolved to survive being frozen solid. The Ernasot records reveal that it is most likely due to their planet having a much colder climate in the time before they evolved, often reaching -100C at night.
Studies of the Ernasot records reveal that their bones and claws are made out of a titanium alloy making their bones very strong. Further studies show that titanium was abundant on their world and that their digestive system can process and refine it. They can digest almost any form of organic material, things not digested will pass through without harm unless its sharp like a shard of glass.
Their muscles and tissues are very light, making them unable to dive underwater, also their bodies contain only about 30% water.
The Nexans have no hearts, instead their blood is kept circulating by muscles in their veins, they also have special expansion pockets that their blood can expand into as it turns to gas either from them flying at high altitude or from being in space. Their blood is sulfur based and yellow. This also makes them immune to most earth disease, their immune system is fairly close to that of a human otherwise.
One of the most notable features is that the Nexans have special cells to perform photosynthesis, allowing them to survive for extended periods without food.
Much of their body is devoted to the recycling of water, allowing them to go about a month without any water at all even in hot temperatures. This also makes them unable to sweat, urinate or even produce saliva.
Their eyes are protected by a second eyelid when they fly or if there is a sandstorm or similar situations. Records translated show that their scales will fall off and be replaced throughout their lives and that these scales are very resistant to getting things to stick onto them.
A study of a volunteer Nexan's nervous system show that they have metal nerves to carry electrical impulses like wires in a machine, making the transfer speed much higher than that of a human. The specifics of the Nexan brain are still unknown, what we do know is that it is made up of some type of lightweight metal. Due to this it is probable that they cannot get concussions. As for how the brain works, the theory is that it somehow uses quantum points in order to process information.
Reproduction:
The females grow eggs on their wings like fruit on a tree in order reproduce after being fertilized by breathing in spores from a male, when they hatch the young will compete for food, the weak die before reaching sentience but two or more usually survive. The young are not named until after this. There is a test to see when they are ready, a simple lock on the “nest” door, when they can open this they are “born”. This is done as if they didn't at least that's what the records show, all the young would become permanently depressed, eventually leading to them committing suicide. It is unknown why this is, the records show several attempts to solve this problem but they all ended the same.
Planetary Information
<TFC logo here>
Planet name: Dal Jarsha (Ancient mother)
Orbit time: 172 earth days
Rotation: 50 hours
Gravity: 1.2g
Moons: 7 (Very rarely visible at the same time)
Planet geography:
Closest equivalent on earth is the Canyonlands National park however the mesas and canyons were much taller on Dal Jarsha.
The planet had no magnetic field and orbited a low activity star so surface radiation was very high compared to earth, making the Nexans fairly resistant to radiation.
Life forms:
All the creatures are plant/reptile hybrids with varying degrees. From the enormous and slow creatures that endlessly walk in search of water (Sumrah), all their “food” being provided by their plant parts, these have evolved natural gauss guns to ward off predators and were used by the Nexans in ancient times. To the smaller predators that prey on the more plant like creatures. Some creatures are essentially plants, growing like trees and grass but able to move slightly. There are also a variety of flying/floating creatures, like the large Korxom, a huge armored/armed leviathan kept afloat on internal gas pockets. Nexans often fell pray to the many predators on the world, making them wary of going outside their cities.
Weather:
Temperature shifts between -10 and +50C half the year is the rain/snow period and it will pretty much be raining continuously and the other half is total drought. During the rain period it rains continuously, however it doesn't rain anywhere near as much as it can on earth. Due to this there were no permanent lakes or even rivers, making aquatic life incredibly rare.
About 20 000 years before the Nexan race evolved to its current form the planet used to be a lot colder and temperature shifts more extreme, going from -100 at night to +50 during the day, this is why they can survive being frozen solid as that was how their less evolved ancestors survived the nights. The increase in temperature was caused by volcanic activity spewing greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, this activity have long since ceased.
Brief History/Etc.
<TFC logo here>
Society/History:
It used to be a lot like earth, that is until the economic system collapsed, leading to nuclear war, almost destroying their world. A dark age took place after that war, with tech having to be reinvented as many things were lost. When this dark age ended they abolished currencies going to a much more sustainable system, this system was successful in eliminating the drain on the planets resources. The day when this happened marked the beginning of the second age.
During this second age the lost technologies were reinvented, their ways had changed from exploiting the world to living as part of it.
Making sure their cities wouldn't destroy nature like the ones before. Everything they needed was provided for free, starvation was stopped and their society looked to have a very bright future. That is until the Dreshna invaded in year 124 of the second age.
Customs:
They believe the body is just a shell and upon death empty and useless, so they are usually left where they die until nature takes care of it, or disposed of if the body gets in the way. In difference to creatures on earth the Nexans will not smell bad or spread disease when their bodies decompose; they turn into dust after a while.
The words “Elron sa Dalos Jarsha“(Love of the ancient mother) are used as a formal greeting, however not really used apart from really formal gatherings.
The words “Omras ela fossech <name>” (Long life to you) are used as a goodbye.
Wearing no clothes at all was considered as normal as wearing them.
Technology:
Their tech level seems to be as earth would have been without "super tech" but with many differences, for one they use gauss guns rather than gunpowder due to a mineral suitable for superconductor coils being abundant on the planet. Early versions of the guns used the larger creatures living on the planet, as those had evolved the weapons as limbs. Eventually they were reverse engineered and smaller and more powerful versions created. No form of personal vehicle was ever used, but large flying creatures were used to transport goods etc. before the invention of a machine to do the same quicker.
During the second age personal communications devices were not used apart from in the military.
Information was available freely at libraries and on their equivalent of the internet.
Architecture:
No elevators etc. in the buildings as the Nexans can fly, but platforms on each floor for entry. No windows/doors at ground level due to there being large predators around. Large windows at the upper levels to lets in sunlight as the Nexans are part plants and need photosynthesis. Lots of plantlike creatures are placed inside their cities like gardens and are used as food.
The buildings are usually very tall and/or carved from the walls of natural stone towers on their world.
Their cities are built to be self-sustaining in order to minimize impact on nature.
Food etc:
Main food is plant/animal hybrids (normally the ones leaning towards plant), usually eaten while still alive and moving without cooking it before, however spices were used heavily making their food very spicy.
Their food generally had eatable or reusable packaging, if any at all, as not to waste resources.
#5478: The city, Ersan
<TFC logo here>
Construction:
Report January 17th 2013:
Most of the city has been prefabricated and is simply brought down from their ship. Once its down the section is attached to the enormous pyramid frame already completed. There seems to be a total lack of stairs, ladders and the like along with any form of heating or air conditioning. I suspect they don't need either as they can fly and the city is located in a desert, however it could be an inconvenience for any visitors. The construction is moving along very quickly and the whole thing should be completed in just a couple of weeks.
Report January 21st 2013:
Most of the city structure is now completed and they are moving down furniture and various machines along with seeds/eggs for their food production. There is still no form of air conditioning or heating being installed. The whole city seems to run on solar power even at this point, each section has its own independent solar panel array and battery system. Due to the lack of heating and air conditioning the whole city only consumes a fraction of the power required for a typical human city of the same size.
Report January 28th 2013:
The city is completed and the remainder of the Nexan people are being brought down from Ernasot. I have been offered a tour of the city once they have settled in and I am looking forward to this. Most of the plant like creatures were brought with them, also frozen, and planted into small gardens everywhere around the city. These will provide most of their food while new plant creatures grow. I was told that they estimated about a year before the first proper harvest was ready.
Report February 8th 2013:
The last Nexan was just assigned his quarters. I have been informed that my tour will be delayed until they can get a shipment of jetpacks to allow flight incapable people to move around the city. They will also be keeping a contingent of military personnel on Ernasot to be used in order to keep the ship ready to defend the earth if required. I have also been informed that they will be performing a complete overhaul of Ernasot, upgrading its weapons, armor and engines with technology from TFC. This includes a warp drive to allow for FTL travel, however it will be limited due to the immense size of the ship but it will allow for responses within the solar system.
Report February 16th 2013:
I have just been given my tour of the city and I have to say, it is incredible. But I will start at the beginning.
At the appointed time one of the Nexan dropships landed out in the street outside my apartment, I got inside and off we went. They stopped a few more times to pick up some other people, a couple of ambassadors and a few politicians. We were given translator machines and jetpacks to allow us to get around properly and to speak with the people in the city of course.
When we got closer to the city the pilot turned the dropship a bit allowing us to see it through the window. It looks like some almost impossible structure. A large glass pyramid with buildings hovering inside. However as we were told the buildings don't hover at all but are firmly attached to the heavy armor plates and structure just under the glass and that the this glass is used to get sunlight inside without actually having a structural weakness like a window. It was built as a fortress as the Nexans didn't know if they would come under attack by the Dreshna again and wanted to make sure they could mount a stand if required.
We landed just next to this huge pyramid, the ground apparently covered in solar panels to power the city. They said that the only entrance was at the top of the pyramid and that we would have to use the jetpacks to get there. One of the politicians thought she would crash if she tried and stayed behind while the rest of us eagerly started our up. Navigation was very easy, those jetpacks are apparently mostly automated so it was essentially point and click.
The entrance corridor was obviously heavily fortified with fixed gun emplacements, again for the same reason, they feared the Dreshna would attack again.
Once inside we found ourselves on a large balcony, just a word of advice, if you are afraid of heights don't visit Ersan. There is a VERY long way down from that balcony and you will have to jump down from it and use the jetpack in order to get anywhere.
Next on the order was some boring meeting about how to integrate the city into human society, that was the politicians jobs so I left to try the Nexan food at this point.
They have this large restaurant like area where everyone goes to eat and their food is interesting to say the least. I can't really describe it here other than it being wiggling and incredibly spicy. There was a Nexan that came up to speak a bit while I was eating, asking a bit about how things work outside their city. I was happy to give my thoughts of course.
Soon the tour continued, we went to see their library, now enhanced with TFC tech and connected everywhere, both the Nexan databases along with the internet. They had no books, everything was saved digitally to save space on the ship. Next up was the garden area, well not really sure if it was a garden or a zoo really. Either way this was the place where most the Nexan food would be produced once the creatures, plants or whatever it was, had grown enough. The tour continued onto a few rather uninteresting areas, like power distribution and the like, most of these seemed to be more or less the same as any human facility other than their location.
Finally we went to see the living areas. They had what you would expect and we were offered to stay for the night, I accepted out of curiosity. The bed was more like a sandbox, but actually not too uncomfortable. But if you ever stay a night, don't use the showers, they use sand instead of water and that doesn't work well with human skin.
Then it was time to leave, it had been an interesting visit and part of me almost wanted to stay longer.
This is my final report. Eric Anderson signing off.
