Nathaniel Grier is a retired vigilante, the best friend of Anvil, a former member of the original Watch Dogs lineup and the father of Debra Jean Grier, the new Nocturnus. Nathaniel is one of the fabled Dozen Jason McRae helped free in Millennium City, and helped Anvil found and manage the Watch Dogs team. Despite being a present factor in the group's origin, by this time Nathan was simply too old to keep up the charade, and never did become a fully operational member. Instead Nathan retired and continued training his daughter - who, after discovering of his vigilante identity years prior - convinced him to teach her to defend herself. Nathan rued the very notion of her risking her safety or mental health in any way, but the lose of their mother and the nature in which she was murdered, prompted Nathan to ensure that given immediate threat to her safety she could defend herself with lethal force. This training in self defense and basic weaponry inevitably lead to Debbie's pursuit of heroics.

During his retirement, Debbie was able to more freely sneak about his lair and begin her own path as the new Nocturnus. When Nathan found out, he felt betrayed and fooled, but he knew he couldn't stop her. Over time, Nathan begins to forgive her and even begins acting as a sort of support package from he lair, keeping six for her and helping from the HQ in any way he can.

One fall day in '96, Debbie convinces her dad to gear up one more time when she unearths a clever mystery seemingly orchestrated by Cold Case, one of his old nemesis'. The case is a baited trap and Toy Maker abducts Nathan, turning him into a living action figure. Having been separated, Debbie has no idea what happened to her father, and believes to this day that Cold Case killed him.
