Sam has returned to the real world, inhabiting the body of Paladin Decen.  Under the new name of Connor Wong, Connor is recruited into the Steel Pack after Steel witnesses the boy single handedly slaying a dragon.  Connor joins Steel on his hunts and parties, while also living with the reality that all his friends think he is dead.

Merrow wakes Connor up, telling him it's morning.  Connor tells her to shut up and puts the pillow over his head.  Merrow tells Connor that Decen always woke up at 5am, every morning, and here he was struggling to get up at 10am.  Connor tells her that he's no keener like that nerd and will take any opportunity to sleep in.  However, Connor gets up anyway after his stomach growls.

Connor trudges to the showers, which are separated per person, thankfully.  Steel notices Connor awake and tells him he's up early.  Merrow grumbles.  Connor heads to the hall to get something to eat, and passes by a couple of excited ladies talking.  Connor asks them what they're excited about, and they tell them that one of the Darkstar members has returned from their travels.  The Coldarrow, Trill Cohen.  Connor looks over and sees Trill returning from the gates, with several people cheering and asking for pictures.  Connor momentarily goes to meet him but suddenly remembers he's no longer Samuel Mason, it'll be weird.  Apparently, the ladies also had the same idea, and tell him that he hasn't got a chance to get noticed by Coldarrow.  That guy is a celebrity.  More people cheer, and Connor notices another familiar face: Toby Rufus.  Trill shakes his hand, and returns to the castle.  Toby gives him a grim look and also enters the castle.  Connor realizes that things must have been hard on him the most, realizing his best friend was killed in action.  The ladies ask Connor if he knows who that man is, and Connor tells them that he knows him as Tob.  The ladies are disgusted for some reason, and tell him that only members of Darkstar are allowed to call him that.  Sentry snickers at the irony, causing Merrow to shut him up.  To the people here, it's manners to refer to them by their names on the battlefield.  "Tob" is known as Lupine.  Connor apologizes, and the ladies tell him not to sweat it.  Maybe if he works hard, he might be able to secure a promotion to work for one of them.

Connor goes to the chow hall and fills up on breakfast.  Merrow is disgusted and surprised at the sheer volume of Connor's diet, telling him that Decen always skipped breakfast.  Sentry tells Merrow that although Sam is a reincarnation of Decen, the similarities pretty much end there.
