Tokusatsu (特撮) is a Japanese term that applies to any live-action film or television drama that usually features superheroes and makes considerable use of special effects (tokusatsu literally translates as "special filming" in Japanese).

While Tokusatsu series usually feature fights between oversized opponents, they revolve around low-mid to mid powered martial-arts superheroes more often than not. This restriction, however, is more likely attributed to budget restrictions in live action shows (unlike the US, Japan is rather frugal with the money they deem prudent to spend in producing a movie or TV show).

While Japan has many high-powered martial arts superheroes, those works are usually featured in anime, and thus don't count as part of the genre (as Tokusatsu refers specifically to live-action works).
