Black Arc is a somewhat reclusive meta-human super hero with powerful energy projecting abilities.

Background

Black Arc was once Dr. Joseph Schmidtt, a brilliant theoretical physicist at Cornell University. Hailing from a rather well-off background, he forsook his chance at the family business to pursue a career in science, his true passion. Dr. Schmidtt developed an interest and later an obsession in the possibility of nearly infinite alternate dimensions implied by developments in quantum physics, and became determined to find a way to harness this nigh-unlimited potential for the good of humanity.

Eventually, he got his chance. An unorthodox particle collider experiment gave him a fleeting, mathematical glimpse at an adjacent plane of reality - the Sigma Dimension. Strange and almost indescribable visually, the Sigma Dimension contained only vaccuum and energy - bizarre, nearly limitless energy that defied all conventional laws of physics. After a decade of research and experimentation, the Doctor developed a method to look into and eventually open contained, controlled portals into this dimension. He intended to harness the the power he found there to create what was essentially free energy and solve multitudes of mankind's problems in one fell swoop, from global warming to resource scarcity. Eventually he created a working model that could do just that, a device harnessing Sigma energy to fire a power-plant essentially forever.

Things began to go awry when the military got word of his experiments. High level representatives met with Dr. Schmidtt. Among other things they implied that they were interested in the development of Sigma energy as a weapon, that they intended to prevent any other nation from acquiring this technology, and that things would not go well for him if he did not cooperate.

Schmidtt realized that this would be disastrous. The Sigma Generator could - theoretically - be used to create weapons and devices that put nuclear weapons to shame, with none of the planet-devastating effects of the latter, making it all too tempting to use. Rather than see his technology horded and turned into weapons of mass destruction, Joseph deleted all of his notes and destroyed the generator himself.

Easier said than done apparently, as when the device was totalled in rage, it released a brief flux of energy that slammed into the doctor and stopped his heart. He was pronounced dead several hours after entering the hospital, only to wake up perfectly alive and intact, crackling with luminescent energy.

And this Black Arc was born. They would have their weapon, but never would it be one they could control. If he couldn't solve the world's problems with his discoveries, the least he could do was make it marginally less horrible by using his newfound power to stop those who would do it wrong.

Personality

Black Arc is a loner through and through. Although he'll occasionally fight together with other heros and military forces, he has never joined any of the prominent 'teams' and usually chooses to pursue his work solo. In combat he casts a rather grim figure, rarely prone to banter beyond informing the enemy of their inevitable defeat; the guy can give a 'your doom is nigh' speech to rival some villains.

Powers

Sigma Energy: Black Arc's characteristic power is his ability to project devastating bolts of Sigma Dimension energy from his fingertips or fists. For the most part it appears electrical in nature and has similar effects. Low-powered bolts leave enemies twitching on the ground with minor burns and muscle spasms; higher levels of power will punch through a man like a lightning bolt. Sigma Energy however stubbornly refuses to obey a number of physical laws, and can be utilized in other ways. For example, for grounded or insulated energies he can give his bolts a kinetic 'kick', less like a lightning strike and more like a car crash. Sigma 'stuff' can be formed into arcing balls that explode after a certain period of time or on impact, or formed into a variety of shields.

Heightened Physical Prowess: Exposure has significantly improved Black Arc's physical condition, granting him athleticism and pain resistance at near peak-human. He is however, still vulnerable to attack as anyone else without his shielding, and does not qualify at the 'super-strength' benchmark.

Boundless Reserves: Black Arc rarely tires and can go for days without sleep without ill effects.

Flight: He can utilize his energies to propel himself through the air, up to 400 MPH flat-out.

Weaknesses

Loner: Again, doesn't work all that well in groups, and tends to pursue objectives on his own. After all, the whole reason he got into this mess was by believing he knew better than everybody else. For the most part, he still does.

Counterforce: It's possible that somewhere out there in the multiverse is a force that acts counter to Sigma Energy, consuming and destroying both itself and its antithesis as matter and antimatter. Should someone devote the resources to finding such an energy or substance, it could effectively depower him for periods of time.

Secret History

Black Arc is not telling the whole truth about how he came to be. It is true he destroyed his device because he didn't want it getting into the wrong hands. It is true that the military was interested in it. What he has omitted is a singular piece of information that frightens him to no end:

The Sigma Dimension is alive.

It is not simply some impersonal physical force, but a massive and terrifyingly powerful energy being that has devoured all matter in its own plane of existence, and several others. It hungers still. The problem is, this revelation came to Arc as a flash of intuition, not something he could prove scientifically. He knows this, he is more certain of it than anything.. but he can't tell or show anyone else HOW he knows. And so nobody would believe him. They'd attempt to utilize the device with disastrous consequences. Thus, the partially-true cover story.

Even more worrying is the knowledge that it was unlikely he'd absorbed a fragment of this being's power without its consent. That it may have -wanted- him to become what he is, is even more frightening than the entity's very existence.

Trivia

-It is known that Arc gained his powers through some crazy science experiment gone wrong, but the details aren't available publically.
